You’ll have to forgive me the lack of technical detail in the review below. I’m not a dentist so don’t know the difference between anterior grade 4729 with lateral whatever and a pile of bricks.
Anyway, couldn’t find much info on Invisalign for closing an open bite before I started treatment apart from a few high level accounts on the internet with few details.
Started Invisalign in Feb 17 and completed all the movement of teeth by December. I now have the Vivera retainers for a while. Due to not really taking care of my teeth when I was younger and being told that I could have braces, but it wouldn’t make much difference, it got to the point where I had quite a severe open bite. I’d bite a sandwich and pull out ALL the filling in one go, not to mention it looking pretty unsightly and making me develop a smile with my mouth closed. Enough was enough. I’m massively pleased with the amount of movement and final result. As you can see below there was a large gap to close but it did so pretty swiftly. I have a bit of an overbite now but it’s slight. Since completing the treatment I also had the two teeth to the side of my front teeth sorted (one veneer, one with a bit of composite). Whilst my teeth don’t look perfect like many people, I’m very happy with them now. It’s unlikely I would ever be able to get perfect teeth without ripping them all out and starting again, or having orthodontics for the rest of my life. But now I can bite things properly and am much more likely to smile!
I had 26 sets of trays top and bottom. Lots of attachments and buttons for elastics. Started changing trays every two weeks then increases the speed to every 10 days or so. I was reasonably compliant. I’d say I averaged 20-22 hours of wear a day for the first 3 months, then 18-20h of wear for the last 6.
Overall, really happy with Invisalign, the process and the result.
Good things about Invisalign:
- Almost no pain. Teeth would feel a little tender for 2 days after a new aligner. That’s all
- No real problems putting them on or taking them off
- Easy to leave them off for 6-8 hours if you’ve got a social event where you just can’t wear them (e.g. wedding, constant food and drink)
- Very quick tooth movement, could quickly see the progress which was motivating
- Adding and removing attachments was quite fast and painless
- Finished much faster than I expected!
- The result
Annoying things about Invisalign:
- Not as invisible as I’d have liked, probably due to having lots of attachments. Could see air bubbles etc. And when some teeth didn’t move as much as they should’ve there was a gap between tooth and tray
- Some bits of the trays were a little rough (around molars, front teeth, hooks for elastics). Carried a little pack with a nail file and orthodontic wax in it to sort any problems
- Took about 3 months to really get used to, though after that it’s really not a problem
- Having to clean after every meal can be a pain when out and about. At work etc. it’s really not much of a problem
