I got my breast implants in 1987, Memes silicone...

I got my breast implants in 1987, Memes silicone over the muscle. I was happy with them for many years. Gradually they became more & more firm, until they were rocks on my chest. I lifted something very heavy in June 2014 & began to have severe pain, mostly around one breast. I kept thinking it would get better but it did not. After about 3 weeks I went to my primary doctor & she ordered an MRI. It showed numerous folds in the implant shell, accumulated fluid around one implant, but no real apparent rupture. I was referred to Dr. Wald in Fullerton. I had my surgery on September 2, 2014. He removed all of the old scar tissue, capsules & the old implants. Replaced with 350 Sientra HP silicone. The incision was under the breast, same as previous, but he told me ahead of time that he would have to make a slightly longer incision to have access to clean out all of the old scar tissue. Apparently, the old Memes implants had a covering over the shells that was supposed to allow the breast tissue to grow into it & be less likely to cause capsular contracture. However that covering (think polyester) degrades over time & creates it's own problem. They haven't been used in the US for many years now. He used the same pocket, over the muscle. He said that there was no advantage for me to have under the muscle, although he does many under the muscle. I have total faith in his judgment, and honestly, the recovery was rough enough without additional trauma to the muscle. I had drains for about 10 days to remove fluid. That was uncomfortable, but I wanted the best possible outcome, with the least possible chance for a reoccurrence of capsular contracture. The recovery was much more difficult than I had expected. The first breast augmentation was done when I was about 30 years old & although I had a lot of discomfort, I was able to go back to work at my office within a few days. This time around, I was 59 & the doctor had to do a lot more cutting & cleaning out of scar tissue. I followed all his instructions, slept elevated, lots of ice, etc. I only had to take pain meds for the first few days & then a Xanax to sleep for maybe the first week. I think a lot of the discomfort was because of the drains. I had several frequent follow up visits. He kept a close watch on my recovery. He instructed me to do a massage on each breast twice daily, actually it is more of an implant displacement than actual massage. It seems like it stretches the capsule somewhat so it doesn't constrict. I already take Singulair for my allergies, so maybe that will be extra insurance. My breasts look very natural, which is what I wanted. I know many of the young gals are looking for the larger breasts with a lot of upper pole fullness, but for me at 5'2", 115 lbs. & 60 years old, I was looking for natural looking, proportionately sized breasts. I am very pleased with the results. It has been 8 months, the scars are fading slowly. They are soft & squishy, which I have not had in years.

Doctor Wald has amazing credentials & is very highly regarded. I can't recite them, but check him out online. Very reassuring. He definitely knows what he is doing. He has his own surgery facility. His surgery coordinator gave me a cost breakdown comparing using the hospital that my insurance would have required & how much of the procedures that insurance would cover (remove one implant only, but not replacements) versus NOT involving insurance & using his surgical suite. My out of pocket expense was dramatically less by using his surgery facility, not involving insurance at all. All of his staff has been great. He took a lot of time with me, always asking if I have any questions or concerns. Lots of follow up appointments to monitor my recovery. I never felt like I was being rushed. I highly recommend Dr. Wald. His office is spotlessly clean. The surgery facility was impeccably clean. His anesthesiologist has been with him for many years & was great. My first BA in 1987 was in Beverly Hills by a highly respected Dr., using his surgical facility. It was all good, but I pricey. He has since retired. So, I had a consultation about 5 years ago with a different Beverly Hills doctor, one that had a TV series about cosmetic surgery. The price estimate at that time for my revision & replacement with silicone, was about $15,000. My insurance was not going to cover any of it, so I thought I would wait until I really had to do something about the capsular contracture. In June of 2014, lifting big bags of potting soil, I finally HAD to.
