Full Tummy tuck with diastasis recti and umbilical hernia repair

History
I'm a 36yr old mother of 3, 5'4" and 123lbs. With every pregnancy, my belly button and diastasis recti has gotten worse. I could see a wide gap in my abdominal wall by laying down and flexing slightly. I think I made this separation worse by doing planks while pregnant. My belly button basically became detached from my abdomen wall, leaving me with a stretched out outie.
I had 2 consults with highly reviewed board certified plastic surgeons in Las Vegas before choosing one whom I thought would give me the best belly button, based on online photos. It was a bonus that he did not charge extra for the muscle or hernia repair.
Belly button
I mentioned the belly button during the consult, but it was only moments before surgery when the doctor set my expectations of my belly button. He said that it would not be an innie and it would be flat. He was right; so far it has turned out flat. I'm only just over 2 weeks post op and still healing, but I don't think that outcome will change much.
Scar location
During our brief consultation the doctor said that he would make my scar lower than my c-section scar. I was surprised at that because my c-section scar was incredibly low. He was correct, my scar is technically lower on the skin. Where my scar currently sits is much higher than my original scar, however. It currently looks weird as if I've had a vagina lift. I'm hoping everything will settle as the swelling subsides and my skin isn't so tight. I don't think there's anything my doctor could have done better since, my guess is, the lifting is a result of removing so much skin. It makes sense that it would pull in both directions.
There's no doubt that my stomach is already looking improved and will look tons better when totally healed. Something that would have helped me through the anxiety of recovery though is having my expectations set ahead of time and concerns addressed regarding my belly button and my scar location.
One thing I've learned is that if you don't have much belly fat to begin with, your belly button is likely to look flat. I just want to help anyone else out there going through the same thing.

It will settle over time. My vagina appeared the same but now I'm eight weeks post-op and it's back to normal. Swelling causes it to look that way.

Thanks for your comment. I thought so and that's reassuring to hear that you had that experience and back to normal.

I also had a TT with Richards. This is a long recovery. It will takes month for the final result. I’m still swollen from the lipo. give your body time to heal.

Yep, I'm giving my body time to heal; I'm aware it takes a long time. I'd love to see your progress pics.

I'll post as soon as my swelling in the flanks and upper thighs goes down. Had lipo on both areas and the swelling is a b*t*h!!!!!

I've heard that lipo can be really rough. I'm gonna try to post along the way, so people can see that the swelling and healing process is normal and in the end, they can get a great result.

Hi VegasMomof3! Congratulations on making it through the hardest parts (in my mind). Now the battle is totally psychological ! It's so hard to be patient and wait for things to settle down but it sounds like you've got a great perspective about the process. I agree that you still look very swollen (totally normal) and that your scar and puffy vaginal area will look a lot flatter/lower once things are less swollen (which sadly could be months away still). Its hard to tell how flat your BB will end up. My BB post op certianly looks flatter than it did pre-surgery (when it was a sad frown-y face look, due to extra skin), but it still looks more like a BB than what I had before. If you look at my MM review, I actually had a super strange crease between my new BB and my old BB for a while after surgery and I was pretty worried it wouldn't un-crease. My BB healed so much better than I could have visualized and now I'm in love with it (though its definitely less "deep" than it was pre-surgery, but it makes me look fit!). How are you feeling physically? Do you feel like you're getting your normal level of energy and stamina back (gradually)?

Thanks for your comment! I totally agree, I'm through the hardest part. Everyday the swelling goes down. I'm feeling better but expected to feel like I could stand up straight by now. It still feels like my skin is super tight and like I'm pulling the wound open if I stand totally upright, so I'm still taking it easy and resting a lot. Your results look amazing btw.

Yes! I wish I would’ve known that about my bellybutton! I’m very petite and my belly button looked flat after my TT (also with umbilical hernia and muscle repair). A few months ago, about 1.5 years post op, my doctor fixed mine (easy, 5 minute procedure) and it’s more of an innie now. Something for you to consider down the road! You can check out my pics.

That's awesome! Thanks for letting me know! Your TT and belly button looks amazing. Is the after pic after you got the 5min procedure done or before?

Thanks! Yes, the after pic is post-belly button fix. If you go back in my photos a bit, you can see the original post-TT belly button which actually looked much like an actual button you could push!

I see now! That is totally awesome. My belly button is already looking really good and closer to your after pic, so I can't imagine it getting even better! It's just a little flat, so if there could be even more improvement, it would be incredible.

Mine looked flat - initially. But as time goes on it will "blossom" into an innie!!!!
August 13, 2019
That is great to hear! Thank you for sharing!

Thank you for. For info and pics. I’m 61 y.o. And diagnosed with ambilical hernia and very wide tummy muscles. Had 3 babies and Breast fed all going in for a tummy tuck and breast reduction.....I’m so fearful! Money issue aside.....recovery and pain is my nightmare. But the need to repair hernia is essential. You post and Pre op pics are appreciated.

I'm glad they are helpful! Seems that many people don't understand that having the muscle separation with umbilical hernia is not only an aesthetic issue, but also a medical, health, and quality of life issue. I think I almost got used to having a weak core and bloating, so it's great to have that fixed. I'm part of a support group for people who had or need the surgery and I don't know anyone who regrets getting it done. You've had 3 babies, so I'm sure you are familiar with pain. Make sure you know how much medication is okay to take for the first few days. It was rough, but totally doable especially had I known/remembered? the dosage option (I was taking one pill when I could have taken 2) for the first few days cuz that was obviously the worst time.

3 week PO: Healing and wound issues

VegasMomOf3
I don't know what exactly is going on with my wound. It started separating a week ago. It looked so gross and scary, I didn't want to post pics. This is actually a major improvement. I had scabs or possibly dead tissue or necrosis that came off and new tissue seems to be filling in the wound separation areas. I've seen others with similar healing problems and it took them a long time to heal. I heard this problem can be a result of over-tightening, lack of good blood supply to the area, or the body rejecting the sutures.
My doc just said to continue with wound care and to let him know if there's signs of infection. Although it looks scary, I'm hopeful that it will heal just fine over time. I'm still happy I had the surgery regardless of this delay in healing. My swelling has gone down a lot and it's nice to look at my flat stomach without stretch marks and a weird herniated belly button. My husband has also been commenting on how great my stomach is looking.

My incision seperated and it took 4 long months to heal, now I'm dealing with the scar.
September 5, 2019
Wow! Sorry that happened! Mine is almost closed at 6 weeks post op; medihoney really helped. My doc said he could do a little revision. I think it's a quick simple thing in office using a local, if I'm correct.

4 months must have felt like an eternity!

5 week update and belly button pic

VegasMomOf3
I'm feeling a lot better and ready to get moving again! My incision wound is healing, but taking a long time. I started using medihoney 4 days ago and it started healing a lot faster; previously it was healing very slow. I may or may not opt to have the scar revised later on. I almost rather have a bigger scar than have another wound needing to heal again.
I have very little discomfort now as my skin feels like it's stretched out a bit; previously it felt very tight and like it would take forever to comfortably stand straight again. I've heard from others that it's taken them many months to stand straight.
When I sneeze, there's only minor discomfort in the area my muscles were sewn together (distasis recti area).
As the swelling has gone down, I also feel like my belly button looks more natural and cute. I'm posting a pic as many people considering a TT are concerned about belly buttons and there are very few clear closeup photos of bellybuttons online to look at. I don't have any fat to hide the scar or to make it look more like an innie, so I'm happy with it.
At the end of my day I still feel a little swollen and kind of itchy in the pubic area, assuming from the swelling or caused from healing as I was sewn all the way into that area. Seems like I'm still less swollen than many people are at this point and I look forward to the final result!

Hi Vegasmom I’m feeling stronger Everyday! The recovery part is hard but just thinking of the outcome makes all the pain and inconvenience worth it!

A cute belly button is everything! :D
It's great that you are healed to the point of minor discomfort when sneezing. I'm 2 weeks post op and have been fortunate to not have experience one yet.
