My FFS Experience with Dr. Bart Van De Ven / 2Pass Clinic

It's been almost a year since my facial feminization surgery with Dr. Bart van de Ven so I think it's the high time to post my thoughts about it. My FFS consisted of a forehead reconstruction (type III) with orbital rim shaving, brow lift and hairline correction, followed by a lip lift, revision rhinoplasty, submental liposuction and a fat transfer to the cheeks, forehead, nasolabial grooves, temples, and lips.

My pre-op consultation went very smoothly. Dr. van de Ven turned out to be a calm and friendly professional. He was patiently answering all of my questions about individual procedures I was about to have and explaining possible risks and outcomes. The thing that I really appreciate about him as a surgeon is that I was given a chance to elaborate on my personal wishes and aesthetic tastes. Unlike many other surgeons, he was not trying to force his ideas or sell me anything. That alone was super important to me since I already had a very specific and clear vision of how I would like to look after the surgery. I felt cared for and listened to.

On the day of the actual surgery, I was so happy and excited that I didn't even have to take any sedatives. I walked into the operating room with a smile on my face and had a quick chat with the anesthesiologist and Dr. van de Ven, who were already there. Soon after that, I lay down on the operating table and "the lights went off".

The moment I woke up after the surgery in a recovery room was surprisingly pleasant, even though I was quite bruised, swollen, and could barely see anything (due to the swelling in the eye area). I don't recall feeling any pain. The only unpleasant thing that I remember was that my mouth and tongue went completely dry for some time (probably the side effect of some medication used during anesthesia). The recovery nurse was constantly looking after me. A couple hours later, I was transported to my private room, where I could rest and recover close to the person I came to the clinic with. If I needed the help of a nurse, I could call her using the beeper device that I was given.

I've spent the first week after my surgery staying in the clinic's guesthouse, which is a very clean, modern, yet cozy place. I almost totally forgot that I came here to have such extensive surgery. The people working in the clinic are all very helpful and friendly. The place radiates a family-like atmosphere. The permanent resident of the guesthouse, Petra, helped me with all sorts of things ranging from washing my hair to preparing delicious vegan meals for me and my companion. She is a really lovely person. I can't hide that I felt a certain sadness when I had to finally leave this place and return home.

Most of my swelling and bruising dissipated over the next month and that was also the time when I returned to most of my everyday activities. At that time, there was still some residual swelling and numbness in certain areas that took another couple of months to decrease. My hairline incision healed beautifully and I can barely notice it now.

Overall, I feel very satisfied with the result of the surgery. It gave me a lot of confidence in everyday life and made me like myself more. I can certainly say that it brought me even more than I was initially expecting. Dr. van de Ven is a versatile surgeon, capable of creating dramatic facial improvements and feminizing even the most severely masculinized faces. During my stay in the guesthouse, I've seen and talked to several of his other patients and all of them looked really good and feminine. If it wasn't for the fact that I'm trying to live "stealth" due to the very transphobic region I live in, I would gladly share my before / after photos with the world. In a sense, Dr. van de Ven has given me a new life, and for that, I'm really thankful.
