My Apple Cheek and Tear Trough Fat Transfer

WORTH IT
Even though I only had about 2 c.c and 2.8 c.c. on each side of my face, the fat still weighed down my face. For several months my face looked really "meaty" and made me feel quite depressed. I finally got a Botox injection on my jawline in April 2022 (masseter muscles) and my face became slimmer. However, as you can see from the photo, my face became a bit sagging. So this is one of the side effects of fat transfer - be sure to discuss with your doctor about the amount of fat to be transferred on your face - especially if you have a small face like mine.

So it migrated? I thank you for posting this because I didn’t know that could happen and am booked for a FT in July.
Hi Jen, I am glad that my experience might be of help to you. I don't think that the fat "migrated" per se. It is more like the additional fat is weighing down the face a little bit. It is possible that my doctor is putting a bit too much on my face. However, on the other hand, if he had not put this much, my apple cheek may have still looked deflated so it is a very difficult mission. I had actually seen another doctor for my facial fat transfer before my FT procedure, and this other doctor actually advised that I needed a "mid-face lift + facial fat transfer". I was so scared at that time about the face lift so I did not go for this other doctor (as this other doctor did not articulate why I needed a face lift and I could not see why I needed a face lift at that time) and chose my doctor (Dr. Wang) instead.

However, looking back, I would say that this other doctor was probably right because he knew that part of my problem was a sagging face (even though it was not really clear to me at that time) which partly contributed to my deflated apple cheeks. So if he had only filled my apple cheeks, it would make my apple cheeks unproportionally big and weighed down my face as well. However, as he did not make this crucial point clear to me, I did not understand why he suggested an extra procedure that I did not ask for. Plus, his attitude was very cold and unfriendly (it seems that some good surgeons are like). So I went for my doctor instead but my doctor did not tell me I had a sagging face issue and more fat on my face would cause it to sag further.

Looking back, a facelift + FT is probably what I needed to achieve the best possible outcome. It took me a whole year (including some painful months) to gradually realize this.

If you are young, a sagging face is probably not your concern - but still check with your doctor what is the best procedure for you. I wish you all the best!

110 days post op

I feel that my face is not as "plump" as it was 2-3 months ago but I actually like it a bit better now because it is more like my old self. It is weird because my face looks longer (and seemed to be smaller) in the photo when it was first done about 2-3 months ago but I actually felt my face was so big and round in real life at that time. Now I feel my face looks better in real life (because I lost a little facial fat and it is a bit smaller) but it looks rounder in the photo. In any case, it still looks better now than pre-op so I am still happy about my result.

I've just come across your post. Same thing happened to me with eye trough fillers - over filled then over dissolved and now looking fat transfer. Your photo post fat transfer looks great! How is it holding up one year later? I hope you're still pleased with the results.
ORIGINAL POST

My Apple Cheek and Tear Trough Fat Transfer

I had an unsatisfactory eye bag removal procedure last year which left me with deflated apple cheeks and tear trough on my face. As a result, I lost all the confidence in my appearance. Whenever I looked in the mirror, I saw two holes on my face. That was the reason why I was thinking about filling up my face and restoring it to what I had before. I was debating between HA dermal filler and fat transfer. I eventually chose fat transfer because I want something natural from my own body. Today is the 34 days post op so I am still getting used to my new face. My doctor was amazing because I did not get any bruise at all, which was very different from what I expected. My face was a bit swollen in the first week but it became more and more natural.
I got 2 c.c. on my left cheek and 2.8 c.c. on my right cheek and tear trough.
In the pictures (which were true to life, no touch up at all), my face looks very natural and not overly puffed. However, in real life, I think my face does become a bit bigger and rounder. Also if you have any crease on your face, that crease may become more pronounced if you did not have the whole face fat transfer. So for whoever wants this procedure, you need to discuss every detail of your face with your doctor and be mentally prepared for a slightly rounder face.

Gorgeous after photo. Can you try doing a video to show what you mean that bothers you..
Sure - I will try doing a video over the weekend. I will also see if I have pictures that show a more pronounced crease on my face post op. Overall, I am happier with my face post op than before. But just like any operation, it's never perfect... it seems that you can always find something unexpected afterwards.
Your results look great! You’re about 2 months post op now. How is the fat transfer holding up? Are you retaining most of the fat? I am getting a fat transfer next month to fill a deficit on both sides of my jawline caused by liposuction. I got chin liposuction about 8 months ago and the PS took fat out of my jawline without consulting me. I’m really excited to finally hopefully look normal again and also super nervous about the procedure.
Sorry CocoaMatcha (what a cute name!), I have been so swamped with work so I did not check my RS site for a while. I am posting a photo of myself as of today (110 days post op). I felt that I lost a bit of the fat but it still looks pretty good overall (i.e. better than pre-op). I went back to the doctor on August 5 (that was my 3 month mark as I had it done on May 5, 2021) and he told me that 3 months is an important mile stone for fat transfer, which means that I probably would not look too much different from this point on.
I know how nervous you must be - I was the same way before my procedure. I got the procedure done in Taipei, Taiwan - my doctor seems to be very good at this (because I did not get any bruise which I was so surprised because I got a lot of bruise in my eye bag removal procedure last year). I will pray for you!
How did it go? Did your bands get any better?
