WORTH IT
Hello All,
My healing has been going very well. I don’t even think I have much swelling left, but I’m sure my face will continue to change and improve since I’m only a bit more than 2 months post surgery. Dr Marten says it isn’t until a year post surgery that one achieves the final final result.
These days I don’t even wear concealers or make up when I’m out running errands. I wear sunblock and most of the time, a mask.
Two weeks ago I was carded by a young dude and I was ecstatic!! I said to him-oh wow- please don’t be shocked when I show you my ID. I was wearing a mask so I’m sure that helped a lot to conceal my real age of 49. :)
Anyway- just wanted to give an update. I’ve been using Biocorneum for lip lift scar and that is about it for scar-care. All of my other scars are barely barely there (like the facelift and the neck lift scar) or are hidden (such as my chin implant scar).
I learned that Dr Marten only has one patient per (surgery) day, so no matter how small your procedure is, he dedicates the entire day to you so he doesn’t rush. I found that to be sooo admirable.
Many of you have asked me privately regarding my experience with Dr Marten— let me say this— on a scale of 1-10, if I could give him a score beyond 10, I absolutely would. I’m a breast cancer survivor and have done double mastectomy and breast reconstruction at Stanford, and I remember mentioning to the plastic surgeon at Stanford who specializes in breast reconstructions that I was about to ft a facelift done by Dr Marten, and both she and her resident/fellow doctor at the time told me I had nothing to worry about with Dr Marten cuz he is so active and well-known. I also had heard from another plastic surgeon in Palo Alto that Dr Marten is “The Godfather of facelifts”.
Last, about two weeks ago, I went to a local plastic surgeon’s office to get some Botox for my TMJ, and their lead surgeon who does facelifts happened to come in when I was getting Botox from their nurse, he asked me who did my facelift, and I told him. He examined me and said “Im a real fan of Dr Marten…aside from doctors in my office, Dr Marten is the only other doctor I would refer people to.”
I had gone to about 4-5 surgeons for consultations, including one in Beverly Hills who charges $900 for the consultation and quoted me $175K, and I am soooo glad I went with Dr Marten.
Anyway- if you have any questions, please PM me and I’ll try to reply . I don’t log in daily but will get back to anyone who’s genuinely interested to know about my experience. I don’t feel comfortable posting pictures though on social media. Sorry about that !
I highly recommend getting lymphatic massage after the surgery once Dr Marten clears you for it. Follow his instructions post care and you’ll be happy.

Thank you so much for the update! I am 9 weeks out from lateral brow lift, fat transfer, and lip lift with Dr Marten and am concerned that I still have either a fair amount of swelling (lips, cheeks and chin) or am overfilled. My upper lip is still really tight and and I can't smile normally.

Do you feel like you still have swelling and/or excess fat?

Hi kimber, how did you manage to drink, take medication with both a lip lift and neck lift? Is your speech affected? Has it proved cumbersome or limiting beyond just the cosmetic appearance due to swelling? Were you back to normal life in a few weeks? Has recovery prevented a return to work? That's my biggest fear. I have a business to run and can't just go awol for several weeks. Has it affected your mind, energy 2 weeks out?

Hi! Sorry for the delay, I just saw this. I didn't have a neck lift.

I am disappointed that the office didn't prepare me for what a huge ordeal surgery would be. (This was my third surgery, so I wasn't totally naive, but still underprepared.) I was lucky enough to have some large silicone straws and ate a completely liquid diet for the first week, with my mouth open (it wouldn't close and creating suction was difficult) and a straw wedged in the side of my mouth. For medicine, I put the pills in my mouth and used the straw to drink water to swallow them. If I didn't happen to have the straws, it would have been a disaster.

I was certainly NOT back to normal life in a few weeks. At two weeks out, my lips were enormous (I had fat injections to the lips), I had oozy bloody incisions at my temples, it was hard to make expressions (I couldn't smile and trying to smile was actively painful). I had him do pretty aggressive mini lipo and really couldn't do much physical activity for about 3 weeks.

It really depends on what you're having done. If you're having lip injections and a lip lift, I would 100% not have been ok in a public-facing position after 2 weeks. It was really painful to talk for long and smiling was awful. After about 3 weeks, I think strangers would just assume I had too much filler/plastic surgery at some point, but I was fine going out in public.

It was 2 months before I could actually smile and, even then, I looked like a total hamster.

During the two weeks from 3.5-4 months, everything settled and now it looks great and natural and I'm really happy. But I cannot imagine not having had a FULL 2 weeks off of everything and a solid 4-8 weeks before I had to interact heavily with people.

Kimber, that is the type of detail I need to hear. While the results inevitably turn out great, it seems the procedures can be disabling for a few months. I consider the inability to speak, drink, enunciate words a disability. Your throat must have been sore for months given you couldn't close it. Other people with blephs have experienced poor eyesight for weeks as well. Do you think your difficulties were the norm or did you get an extra severe lip lift and fat grafting? I don't know how people get through the many months of misery, unless they are retired or someone else is managing things for them for a few months. Not everyone has that luxury. One can afford it financially, but who can afford the time to step away from their careers or affairs for a quarter of the year to recover? Not many. I wonder if people factor this in.
September 9, 2021
Hi all, can you go into the recovery a bit more? In theory one can return to work after 2 weeks. How many of you actually did so, and how was it? Do you still feel awful 2 weeks out. I know looking awful and swollen is in the cards, and im fine with that but how does it FEEL? I need to know if I can go back to work. Can you drive at 2 weeks? Love to get a tally on how long before back to normal. By that I mean working, sleeping, not dependant. How long do we need to baby ourselves. Again, I don't care about appearance...up to a year of recovery is fine with me. How long until we can behave and live as normal? Anyone with kids, a career? When can we reasonably expect to jump back into those roles? Thank you!
September 23, 2021
Hi I'm about 4 months out, and I'm a mom of young kids and even though I don't work now, I would say that I felt comfortable going out and seeing people by 3rd or 4th week. Certainly by the 6th week, you will look very good already.... If I didn't do a lip lift, I would say even sooner , as all my swelling was only visible to those who knew me very well. As I mentioned in my review, I went to many sessions of lymphatic massage on the face , and you can ask Dr Marten about that and he will tell you when you are clear to do that ... I think it was about 1 month after surgery.
October 2, 2021
Thank you for the inside scoop, yotti. Certainly sounds doable. One more question: I understand the first week of recovery is the worst. Were you able to read during that time? I'm just wondering if I will be able to get out of my head and read a book....or if it's too uncomfortable for that and we just have to suck it up and endure intense discomfort those first few days. Just how uncomfortable is it? I'm preparing for the worst!
October 15, 2021
Hi Jansing Yes I was able to read the first week. Eating was difficult so they recommend eating soft foods the first couple of days- I'm not sure if that was recommended to me because of the facelift or because of the lip lift..... But I would say that the first week was definitely not easy. I was never in pain much, but you're just so swollen that it was uncomfortable . However, it was over before you know it. That's the most comforting part. At first it seems like everyday takes forever, but then you just relax and enjoy binge watching some shows and before you know it, you already feel a lot better (by second week)! You won't like your looks yet by second week, but you can already see the results are gonna be great . That was my experience and the experiences of girls that I had talked to ....

Almost 2 months

Hi All,
Just wanted to drop in a quick update to let you know how im doing. I will be 2 months this coming week on the 26th!!
I’ve had many many sessions of lymphatic massage. First of all, I highly recommend this, so don’t hesitate to take up on the complimentary session that Dr Marten sets you up with! It makes a noticeable difference every time!
I can honestly say, almost no one can see the swelling anymore except myself. I had some Botox injected to my masseter muscles since I suffer from TMJ and teeth grinding at night (I got clearance from Dr Marten), and that has helped to slim my jaw a little bit since they were pretty worked up from grinding…
As far as my scars go— Dr Marten’s work is just - how should I put this— IMPECCABLE. I mean, truly truly miraculous…. the scars are barely there, so I’m not worried at all about showing my ears. I go to a blowout salon periodically, and every single person has said they can’t even see the scars….
When I got the Botox done by a nurse close to where I live, their surgeon happened to stop by and asked about my facelift and who it was done by. He examined me and said he was a true fan of Dr Marten. He said, aside from this office, Dr Marten’s is the only one he would ever refer people to….
I’ve started to resume all my routines around skincare, exercise, etc. the only thing I’m still holding off on is getting facials….. he said to wait until after 3 months….
Any questions , pls feel free to IM me!

How long was it before you could go out? Go to work? Or see anyone who did not know? I'm just starting the process of interviewing surgeons ...Thanks
August 2, 2021
Hi Los Gatos I would say 2-3 weeks .... you are still swollen by 2-3 weeks but if people don't know you, they won't be able to tell that you had anything done. If friends or family see you, they might be able to tell something is a bit off, but these days with a mask on, I don't think anyone can tell at all. I think I remember by the end of 3 weeks you're pretty much ok .

Just chiming in. I’m six weeks out of facial fat transfer, lateral brow lift and lip lift. My friends still say they don’t recognize me and I am still quite swollen. A lot of that is the lift lip, granted, but my entire face is really round, especially cheeks. I went out to dinner at 3 weeks and got a lot of curious stares.
August 3, 2021
Oh my! I'm so sorry you are still experiencing swelling. Is the swelling worse in the morning ? And does it get a bit better by bedtime? Do sleep with your head elevated?
User Avatar

Swelling does seem to be worse in the morning, and I do sleep with my head elevated. I’m hoping it’s residual swelling and not way too much fat retention in my cheeks, lol! I take photos every day and there is definitely improvement and refinement week to week, but boy has it been a process! (Most of what is making me appear a little “off” is the swelling/stiffness from the lip lift and fat transfer to lips.)
August 5, 2021
Hi Kimber132 - I'm sure the swelling will improve slowly and I'll bet there will also be resorption of some of the fat. Remember that lips tend to swell a lot--even with fillers or lip blushing (tattooing). I know how much anxiety this can cause, but this might be the only good aspect to masks being required again.

Thank you for your reply. 2-3 wks. is very reasonable. I'm at the very beginning of this process. I'm going to call Dr. M. and set up a consultation. (I've done this before, 20 years ago, but my previous surgeon (Dr. Eshima) retired.

6 weeks post surgery !

yottiyotta
Wow- isn’t it funny how in the beginning, recovery always seem so difficult and days go by so very slowly in the first 24-36 hours or even the first week post surgery? Then it starts speed up and before you know it, it’s already 6 weeks!
I feel pretty good now- seems like most of my facial swelling have gone away - though I hope and believe that my face will get continue to get slimmer and smaller… I also have been going to lymphatic massage pretty diligently, —1-2x per week. I also started using my skincare products again- I love taking care of my skin, and this is something that I really missed during the first month of recovery , as I was advised to use very minimal products since the skin was just recovering from the surgery .
I believe 6 weeks is also when Dr Marten said that one could do more vigorous exercises, so I have no more excuses now! Lol
My scars from the facelift are barely even there. People are amazed at that when I point out where the scars are— (Well, after all, we ARE talking about one of the most well known surgeons for facelifts here, Dr Marten. ) the doctor’s skills and experience really determine how well the scars are healing .
Overall I’m very happy that I did the surgery, and I know this is not near the final result yet but I have faith that I’ll look better and better everyday for the next coming 10 months!

Thanks so much for the update. So glad to hear everything is healing well, six weeks out. How is your lip lift and the scarring?
July 23, 2021
Hello The lip lift scar is the last one to go, and frankly it is the only one I have to work at "concealing ".... But I'm my own worst critic. Unless your company is staring at your face, most people can't see them if you put on some concealer. It is fading slowly- I can see the redness slowly losing its concentration. I wear masks often just so that I don't even need to wear make up. I just put Biocorneum which has SPF in it and use my mask when I go out . I feel that in time, it should heal just fine.

Thanks so much for the reply. This is reassuring, as I'm at 5 weeks out and my lip lift is still distorting my face a fair amount. Grateful for biocorneum, extra SPF and masks :)
July 21, 2021
Great to read about your experience with Dr. Marten. I'm also a happy Marten patient now 4 months post op. Your swelling will definitely go down more! It took about 3 months for me, and I think I still have some swelling in the chin area. I'm very pleased I did this!
July 23, 2021
Hi There! Cool! So happy to hear from you! So what did you do in April? Next week will be 3 months post op for me. I'm already very happy . Is 4 month different from 3 months post op? Is it true you'll continue to decrease swelling and change for all the months to come in the first year ?
July 23, 2021
Hi! I had a FL and fat transfer. I previously had a neck lift with Dr. Marten in 2017. I think I look pretty much the same at 4 months vs. 3 months. Which is great! I don't want to lose any more volume at this point. It seems that the neck lift took a lot longer to settle. Can I ask how old you are? I'm 43, so this was an early maintenance facelift. Very happy I did it now. I feel like I'm in my early 30s again, yet nobody knows I did a thing!
August 2, 2021
Hi Lucillenyc Thanks for your reply! Wow - you are young for a FL and neck lift! I misspoke earlier. I'm only a bit past 2 months but already most of my swelling is gone. I have been very diligent in going to my lymphatic massages, at least 1-2 times per week. I found someone near me so I believe that has helped a lot. I don't think people can tell I'm swollen and I think the only thing is my upper lift is still a bit uneven from the lip lift, but I just wear masks most of the time. The scars from the neck lift and facelift are nearly invisible . They have been barely there since like week 3. Dr Marten's skills are just impeccable. The only thing I think people can see are the eyelid lift scars and lip lift scars but with a bit of concealer, they're completely not discernible . I'm 49 and I was just carded two weeks ago- I was ecstatic !! though I was wearing a mask- haha, so I'm not sure if it counts much.
December 2, 2021
Were you able to see photo's of before and after that Dr. M has performed before your consultation? It doesn't show anything on their website. Can you also give me a ballpark of price range (I know everyone may have slightly different work done) and what the surgery timeline was once you went ahead with it?
December 6, 2021
Such great info, thank you so much! I don't see any before and after photos, would love to see the results if you're ok with that (disguised or not!) since I think I'm going to commit to surgery with him any day now. I'm nervous and excited! His cost seem high, but as I understand it he only does one FL surgery a day and so he's all there for you. I'd rather pay more to not have an exhausted doctor since most surgery's are 5-6 hours long!
