Reflection on Lower Blepharoplasty, Two Years Post-surgery
I had a lower blepharoplasty with Dr. Amadi in July 2023, so I'm reporting back about two years later!
To preface, I'm pretty anxious about medical procedures and felt nervous and conflicted about pursuing a cosmetic procedure. Of course, it wasn't "necessary," but in reflection, the blepharoplasty really gave me a sense of confidence that I'd been working toward for years before the procedure. The confidence-building is ongoing -- one surgery will not fix everything -- but my experience with Dr. Amadi certainly helped me on my way.
I had significant eye bags since my early teen years (genetic, but likely worsened by poor sleep and nutrition) and felt ready to do something about them in my early 20s. I was definitely on the younger end of blepharoplasty patients, but if you're a young person with genetic bags and no other underlying causes, they're probably not going anywhere. No one noticed them as much as me, but I looked older and more tired than I felt. I wanted my eyes to reflect the vibrancy and optimism I felt on the inside!
My initial consultation with Dr. Amadi was lovely and thorough. He agreed that I was a good candidate for the bleph but didn't pressure me to proceed with the surgery or fillers ASAP (other surgeons did!). I think this was about two years before I actually decided to do the surgery with him; it took me a long time to research surgeons and make a decision, and I'm glad I took my time! I'd definitely encourage anyone else considering blepharoplasty to take your time so you can feel as informed about the procedure and surgeon as possible.
On the procedure itself: it was super speedy! I can't remember much, which is great. No pain and a family member drove me home. The bruising and swelling during the following two weeks was significant, but not super intense; I'm also not a big bruiser.
During this initial healing time, I was very nervous about the results. I held onto Dr. Amadi's reminder during my pre-op appointment that "you're starting here -- with bags -- and we're going to get you somewhere between here and perfect." In other words: perfection is impossible.
The bags are now gone, and they were my main concern, so thank goodness. My dating life opened up and I generally feel and look around my age. These are HUGE improvements.
It's also taken time to adjust to my post-surgery appearance (hence the mention of perfection being impossible). I don't have a ton of natural volume in my face, so I have a bit of hollowing between my upper cheeks and eyes. I don't love it, but ultimately, it's just a part of my face and bone structure. It's more obvious to me now that I no longer have bags, but also something I am trying to accept now and as I age.
Dr. Amadi mentioned fillers could be an option to temporarily resolve hollowing. Currently, I'm not interested in filler -- I'm just a bit too anxious, and the bleph was a big emotional decision for me -- but other patients might feel more comfortable with following the bleph with filler, if needed.
Overall, my experience with the blepharoplasty was positive, and I trust Dr. Amadi. I'm actually dealing with a lower eyelid cyst (unrelated to the procedure) and considering Dr. Amadi for removal. He is professional and honest, which I deeply appreciate. My post-op appointment was a bit rushed, but I also didn't do a great job of asking questions (it was one of those times when I remembered everything I meant to ask in the car ride home). I'd highly recommend preparing with a list of questions for every appointment to ensure your comfort and understanding. Dr. Amadi will readily and thoroughly answer those questions if you take the time to ask them!
