I am a man in my 40s who has always been bothered by my prominent ears. I inherited many good things from my father, but unfortunately I also inherited his too-prominent ears, and I always felt awkward and unhappy with that aspect of my appearance. When I was younger, I wore my hair longish to cover my ears, but I couldn’t really continue to do that when I grew up.
When I was in my early 20s and had my first “real” job out of college, I saved up the money to have ear-correction surgery. Unfortunately, the plastic surgeon I chose did a very poor job and after going through all the hassle and expense of surgery, healing, time lost from work, etc., the result was very little change -- I looked basically the same. Years went by and “life happened,” as they say... I went to grad school, moved to New York City, embarked on a rewarding career, and I attempted to put the whole ear issue on the back burner and tried not to focus on how I looked. But it continued to bother me in the back of my mind. I thought about it at least once a day when I looked in the mirror.
A couple of years ago I decided began to do research in earnest to find the best ear surgeon I could, and have revision surgery. I was determined to get my problem fixed once and for all, even if it meant traveling across the country to do it.
I had since moved to Washington, DC, and I was very fortunate to find Dr. Thomas Le, whose office is outside Baltimore in Ellicott City.
I made an initial consultation appointment and during my conversation with him I was very impressed with his professionalism and in-depth knowledge of the construction of the ear and advanced techniques that would result in very natural-looking results. He described the entire procedure and after-care process in great detail and then showed me photos of several of his otoplasty patients, whose results were the best I had seen. For some reason he doesn’t have many photos of this procedure on his website, but he has performed dozens of them and has detailed photos that show the beautiful results, on men and women, people of all ages, etc.
I scheduled the procedure for three weeks later. It was done in his office and took about 3.5 hours. He used local anesthestic. I took a Valium just prior to the surgery, which calmed me down and I would recommend to other people.
(I should mention that someone doing this procedure for the first time will have a somewhat shorter surgery time and the price is lower because the surgery is less complicated, or at least that’s my understanding.)
My recovery was relatively easy... there wasn’t a lot of pain, and the medication I was given aleviated mostly all of it. I took a week off from work because of the head wrap I had to wear for a several days, but the discomfort really only lasted a couple of days.
It’s been about 2.5 months and I am thrilled with the way my ears look now. They are much less prominent and look like a normal guy’s ears... and they look completely natural, like I never had anything done to them. This is exactly what I wanted. I can get my hair cut as short as I want it and not worry about my ears showing. I feel much more confident now in social situations, business meetings with clients, etc. I feel a lot better about myself, and I can finally stop worrying about my ears, because they look perfect to me now.
I wish I had done this years ago and I highly recommend Dr. Le to anyone considering this procedure.
