I'm one day post op from my bilateral gynecomastia surgery. Very happy with the results even in the early stages of healing, with only mild bruising and pain. My initial consult was on November 21, 2016 and had the surgery on January 9, 2017. The surgery was done in the morning at the Alberta Surgical Centre. On the day of the surgery I checked in half out before my scheduled surgery time and was brought into a private waiting room. A scrub nurse came in, took my vitals, confirmed my medical history, weighed me and then instructed me to dress in the hospital gown. I waited about 40 minutes for Dr Chong to come in for the pre op consult, where he went of the process, answered my questions, and marked my chest on the areas he was operating. He then left the room and I waited an additional 10 minutes for the anesthesiologist to come in. Shortly after, I was brought into the surgery room, and asked to lay onto the surgical table. I was given an IV, and the anesthetic, and then woke up after in the recovery room. After about 1 minutes the nurse asked if I wanted to sit in an area with more comfortable seating, which I did and was met by my friend who was driving me from the facility. I have an ave bandage tightly around my chest and was instructed on what and what not to do in the first 24 hours. This morning I went for my post op meeting with dr Chong, where he went over after care, and I got to the finally see the final result. I was given a firm fitting compression vest which is a bit more comfortable and was told to come back in 1 month

When looking at my chest compared to your before pics, makes me think that if I could drop overall body fat % down to 15% or less, I could live without surgery, because I would be ok looking like yours before your surgery.

I toned up a bit over the last 6 months or so before the surgery and i did notice an improvement where my gynecomastia looked more like muscular pecs, rather than breast tissue. I wanted it to be a more permanent which is why I decided to still go for the surgery. Worth the try for you if you're wanting to avoid the surgery. I found working to correct my posture while losing weight made a big difference for me. Strengthening your upper back to allow for your shoulders to be pulled back, rather than having a slouched posture that makes the brest tissue stick out

Great reply, thanks man! Everything you said makes perfect sense!

Where did you have this done? In a hospital or at an outpatient clinic with another surgeon, I'm trying to find the right doctor and am having a hard time deciding who is qualified. Any insights?

Admin deleted my original comment because I put a URL, but I had it done by Dr Feng Chong in Edmonton, Alberta. I had it done at the out patient clinic at Alberta Surgical Centre. Went in at 10:45am and was sent home by 2pm

I am thinking about having this done, but I've had a few doctors tell me it may not be worth it because it could cause swelling due to scar tissue or sunken nipples which may be worse or the same as the problem of breast tissue.

We have very similar builds and I'm curious how your recovery is going.

Can you give me any insights on what it was like to go back to the gym and if building your chest after surgery is still possible?

Also how is it dealing with the numbness and lack of expansion and contraction of your nipples after surgery?

I just posted an update on my profile that touches on that, so feel free to give it a read. My surgery was 3 days ago so it will still be about a month before I can go back to the gym (wish it was a lot sooner, but I'm not going to risk it). I haven't seen the incisions without the paper tape covering them, as instructed by my surgeon, but I can still tell that I'm not having issues with loose skin or lack of contraction of the nipples. I haven't seen the flexed appearance of my pecs, but my muscle was already pretty developed in my pecs before I had surgery, so the skin has already settled and the swelling is pretty minor. I'm not sure if that is different for people who have reduced musculature in the chest, but not something I'm specifically having any issues with.

In regards to the surgeon saying that you can have sunken nipples, get a second opinion and see another surgeon that specializes in male breast reduction. If you're getting the sunken look in the chest, it's because the surgeon took away too much of the breast tissue, and isn't leaving enough to allow the chest to have a natural appearance. My surgeon told me he was going to leave some fat and breast tissue under the skin and nipples to avoid that sunken look in the chest. I was nervous about that at first and that it would still be noticeable, but the result was better than expected

Day 3 post gynecomastia surgery

User Avatar

Today is day 3 after my surgery and I'm surprisingly feeling great. Ive only had to take 2 pain meds(Tramacet) since the surgery and have have been off them completely for the last two days. I'm now only taking the antibiotics (Cephalexin) that my surgeon told me to continue taking for 7 days. I was given a prescription for stomach aches as well, just incase, but I haven't had to take them at all. I have to keep reminding myself to take it easy and to not overdo it with my healing, because I wasn't expecting to feel this good 3 days later. I still have bruising that is starting to develop a little more up around the collarbone and sternum and numbness around the nipples on both sides, but barely any pain. I asked my surgeon about the numbness and he said that can either be permanent or it may get better with time. Luckily it's not overly noticeable unless I touch my chest, rather than a constant tingling feeling, which I think I would have more of an issue with.

I was able to take my first shower yesterday and took another one today with no issues or discharge coming from the incisions. My surgeon instructed me to keep the paper tape over the incisions until they start to come off on their own over the next couple weeks, at which point, replace them with paper tape that I can buy at the pharmacy. The compression vest that I have to wear for the next 4 weeks is really discrete under my clothes which I'm happy about. Its similar to the elastic material you find with athletic compression shirts, but it's a lot tighter, so I do find it a little uncomfortable around the belly and find that I keep adjusting it throughout the day to relieve some of the compression around my stomach. It's more just uncomfortable when I sit, or after I eat, and can be a little itchy. Nothing I can't live with though, and no pain around the incisions themselves.

I can already tell I'm going to go a little stir crazy from not being able to work (massage therapist) for about a month or to go to the gym until my follow up apt on Feb 21st. The surgeon said to come back in 4 weeks but I live 5 hours drive away and would have to get a hotel again, so I won't be able to make it back to Edmonton until about 6 weeks after, unless I feel like there are any concerns that I would need to go sooner than my schedule allows. It's -30C where I live in Northern Alberta, so I'll have to find some indoor activities to keep me occupied. Any recommendations? Lol

I probably won't do another update until there are some changes in my progress, but feel free to message me if you have any questions about the healing process

First view of areola incisions post surgery

Today (day 6) I changed the paper tape dressings over the areola incisions for the first time. There is still some yellow bruising, mild swelling and temporary creasing on the skin from the dressings, but I'm happy with the result and being very cautious to follow all directions from my surgeon, so that it stays that way. I've seen some botched jobs on the incisions in some photos that other people have taken, so it's good to know that I appear to be on track for them to heal nicely.
