Student Working Hard to Afford To Remove This Mistake - Edinburgh, GB

Hi, I'm Rebecca and I'm a 19 year old Student in Edinburgh and im grateful to have stumbled across this forum! I was having a very rough time a while back and impulsively decided to get a tattoo thinking it would make me happier - however it did the opposite! I didn't need an appointment and the tattoo artist just did it there on the spot and it did not turn out how i had hoped. I always wanted an elephant, but i imagined it to be a lot smaller and not so dark and dense. Also, I didn't really take placement into consideration, I think it looks ridiculous and far too big on my body (im 5ft, size 8) and would much rather have it somewhere hidden (im finding it very hard just to post a picture of it on here). I aim to pursue a career in fashion and constantly having to cover up and avoid wearing nice dresses is getting me down because I care a lot about my appearance and what others think - the fashion world is a very bitchy place.
Anyway, I am seriously considering laser removal. I've searched and searched for months but have been putting it off due to shortage of cash (if i start, i might not be able to keep affording it and then id end up with even more of a mess??) and the thought that it might not actually work. I just wondered if anyone has any thoughts about whether removal would be effect on such a dark and dense tattoo? even if it was just to be lightened and then covered with makeup.
Any support would be fab, I dont feel i can talk to anyone else about this, especially not my family, and my boyfriend is agaisnt me spending so much money on removal too.
Thanks!
x

Still unsure about removal...
My tattoo actually hasn't been bothering me as much as usual the past week or so because I've been busy but I started looking for a dress to wear for my birthday night out and realised how much I really don't want it on show, so I'm having to search and search for a dress that covers it up (not ideal for a hot nightclub on a summer night) - i just keep thinking about the freedom I used to have when getting dressed! I think I'm going to go for a consultation for laser removal before the end of the week hopefully and I'm really quite nervous about what the cost will be and how long the process is actually going to take. I'm reluctant to start because there's so many other things i could spend the money oh, like learning to drive!
Has anyone started laser removal and regretted it? Or is it a relief to know that the process has started?

Hi Rebecca. I think your tattoo is nice, and it's definitely original. Since joining realself I have found that tattoo removal affects people differently. Some simply go for laser and carry on with their lives, while others like me are mentally drained by the process and fight to stay happy everyday. It amazes me how a blotch on my skin can ruin my life so much. I've been undergoing removal for nearly two years now, and I became so desperate a few months ago that I nearly had the tattoo surgically removed. Not to scare you or anything, but if you do go through removal then it's really important that you don't let it take over your life. I wouldn't wish how I feel upon anyone. Good luck whichever path you take and please keep us posted!

Still apprehensive...
I wasn't planning on updating this until I has actually begun my laser removal, but I've found myself no further forward and still trying to pluck up the courage to even go to a consultation... How will I manage the whole journey if I'm too worried to even start it?! I keep putting it off thinking it's not worth it, but I've got my birthday night out coming up and am desperate to wear an open back dress for once and not restrict myself. However I feel so self conscious having my tatt on show and don't want to spend the whole night worrying what people are thinking about me. I admire those who can go out in a vest or whatever and not give a damn!!
Anyway, I guess I'm just needing a kick up the backside to actually get started with my treatments.

Your tattoo looks nice from an outsider's perspective -- no one else knows that you don't like it and no one will judge it as harshly as you do. Own it and wear all the cute backless dresses you want! I absolutely hate how my half sleeve turned out (thus lasering it off haha) but I've never hidden it. People often give compliments and I just say "thanks" if I don't want to get into it (which is most of the time).
I understand how you feel about the tattoo, but it looks great with your backless dress. And I'm a girl so I can say that without being creepy. :) Also I can't say this will be the case for anyone but perhaps this will motivate you: I have felt GREAT since getting my first laser treatment last week. It's so much less about the anticipation/stress/foreboding now that the process has started. If you know for 100% certain you want it off of you, the best thing is to get started! You'll feel a lot better once you get the ball rolling.

Thank you! I am totally indecisive, one minute I 100% want it gone then next minute I'm thinking "hmm maybe I can put up with it for a little longer". I think it's just the money, the pain and the time scale putting me off but I guess I'm just going to have to deal with that if I want it gone! X

aloha rlrobb, I'm not sure about the kick in the backside :) but I know I felt much better after a consultation. And then once I started lasering, I felt even better. I was doing something, "taking care of business", I was in charge. I agree with jiapet, below, "own it, wear all your cute dresses". Yes, we may all think your tattoo looks great (and it does) but what you think is far more important. I like your tattoo, it looks like Ganesha, remover of obstacles...and so powerful. Get a consultation, get some information, know what to expect and move forward. Information is power. Information restores us, ignorance is not always bliss. Good luck. aloha...k

Black is supposed to be an easy color to remove but any tattoo removal is a very slow process. I have to wait a while between treatments to save up for them but I felt much better once I had just gotten started. I think once you get a plan of action in place, you'll feel more positive about it. Good luck!

Yes catbishop, you are absolutely right. A plan of action does wonders for the psyche. Removal is a slow process and so it helped me to stay positive, try to be patient, and persevere with the process. "Rome wasn't built in a day", it all takes time, but it is so worth it, and each of us is worth the happiness and peace of mind that the laser brings.

I am just checking in to see if you have started your removal yet. Hope all is well!
