One month post op

Thought I would update as things are still changing. Swelling is still going down, I have a tight feeling when I sit down, not painful at all just a sensation. Also random tingles and heaviness, I am thinking this is probably the nerves repairing and everything healing. Cannot believe the difference, I am so much more comfortable, physically and in my head. I am massaging the area gently as directed by my surgeon. I plan to go back to the gym this week, I was told one month so I will just start off carefully. Really dont want to jeopardise my results, so pleased so far. If you are considering having this done I would highly recommend Mr Banwell.

This is a procedure I have wanted to have done for...

This is a procedure I have wanted to have done for over 20 years, since I was a teenager. For physical and aesthetic reasons. Overall I found the process straightforward, I think this is because I really researched doctors and the whole process. Also I took two weeks off work, I would strongly recommend that you have enough time to recover. In the second week I went out but I was still spending time in bed resting and I was glad I had the option to stay home all day If I wanted.

On the day of surgery I was first on the theatre list as I hate waiting around and get really nervous having a general anesthetic. Mr Banwell came in to see me before and he also came in before I went home, as I did not stay overnight, I Arrived about 7.30am and left about 6.00pm. If I had the surgery later I would have had to stay overnight, but I just wanted to get home to my own bed. When I came round I was in absolutely no pain at all, about 4 hours later I started feeling some pain coming on so I asked the nurse for something before it got too bad. I took painkillers that they gave me to take home (paracetamol and Ibuprofen) for the next 3/4 days then I didnt need them. The actual hospital was really nice and the nurses were excellent, they kept checking on me, I was also impressed that the anaesthetist came and checked on me afterwards as well. Before I left the hospital Mr Banwell came and had a look to make sure I was ok to go home and I was given after care sheets and a date for a week later for a nurses appointment, then one week after that an appointment with Mr Banwell.

My only blip in an otherwise straight forward recovery was that a few days after my nurse appointment I started bleeding from the stitches on one side, I thought Ill wait to see if it stops but an hour later it was still bright red and quite heavy. So I called the hospital and spoke to a nurse who was lovely and told me to come in and not to worry. when I arrived I was seen really quickly, I thought a nurse would have a look, but I was told they would get the doctor on call to check everything. Everything was fine, but I was impressed at the after care, and also the fact that the doctor on call said he had spoken to Mr Banwell. The next day a big blood clot fell off with a stitch in the middle, so I think it was just trying to work its way out!

I am still a little swollen, and feel very sensitive, but so far I am very happy with everything. I think I might have another procedure to remove some skin round the clitoris, which Mr Banwell said can usually be done under local anaesthetic. But I am going to wait until everything settles down, I dont want to tempt fate and do anything unnecessary but I think it would make a difference.

Mr Banwell specialises in this procedure and has also written papers on the subject and lectures. Straight away I felt at ease and confident that I was in good hands. I had two consultations, there is a charge for the first one but any further are free. For some reason I had in my head that I wanted and needed the wedge technique, however Mr Banwell was quick to point out that I was not a suitable candidate so I had the trim method. (I cant remember the exact reasons, but he did explain) He also said that the method was really down to the surgeon to decide. I would highly recommend Mr Banwell and the McIndoe centre, you hear so may horror stories that you really need a surgeon who specialises in this procedure. Also someone who is going to follow up with regards to after care. Included in the cost of surgery is the nurses appointment, and two follow up appointments with the surgeon. But it was also made clear to me that at any time I could phone up and be seen if I had any concerns. Nothing was too much trouble for the nurses or the admin. staff.
