I am writing this review as it is so hard to find any long term, follow up information on this procedure online! I tried to do all the research I could before getting this done, but there isn't much available, so I just went for it and I have now had the implants for a year. So here's my review...
Always hated my ears, as we all have, and so at 29 finally decided to have them done! Not having to wear huge head bandages for a week and the simplicity of this procedure attracted me to it. I have 2 kids so couldn't take a load of time out for recovery. I also liked being able to see what your ears will look like first. (To be honest I would have considered ANYTHING better than what I had). So anyway, booked into a private hospital in UK for consultation and then booked in for procedure 2 weeks later. This cost me about £1750 which was consultation, follow up, antibiotics and 1 Earfold in each ear. Its advertised online that the procedure is 20 mins but realistically, it takes longer than that, mine was about an hour. Had it done in the micro surgeries room, cleaned up my ears and then local anaesthetic in each ear. Mine was about 5/6 injections in each ear was incredibly painful, but as expected considering it's into such thin skin. Then the ear is cut and the implant slid inside, there is a lot of tugging and pulling around of your ears. Doesn't hurt as it you are numbed but its an odd feeling as you can feel the tugging etc. Anyway, after that I grabbed my antibiotics and painkillers and went home with bandages on my ears (see pic).
I was told to leave bandages on for a week but after a few days I took them off and my ears were very swollen but they didn't stick out anymore so they were perfect in my opinion. After a week or so the stitches were so irritating I just took them out myself and once they were out, the ears healed well. I slept with my head on a memory foam neck pillow so whichever ear I was lying on was in the hole as I longed to sleep on my side! So anyway, ears healed up and a year down the line I think this is how my ears will stay now and it isn't all perfect.
I can only sleep on memory foam pillows as after a while the ear I am lying on gets sore where the implant is. I initially thought I needed a softer pillow but after trying all sorts I have settled on memory foam pillows. I don't get the pain with those pillows. If I am staying at a friends I can use a normal pillow but around the implants do get sore whenever there is prolonged pressure on them such as sleeping. Holding a phone to my ear also causes me trouble as well as again its prolonged pressure directly onto the implant. I can tug my ears, push them, pull them around and I feel no pain or discomfort at all. But it is when there is direct pressure on the skin over the implant the skin rubs against it and becomes sore, as its such a thin layer of skin.
After a year of these implants I have come to the conclusion that I will always have to be slightly considerate of the implants as they are under very thin, sensitive skin. I will need to make sure I use the correct pillows and take care of my ears. For me, this is a very, very, small price to pay for having my ears the way they are now. I absolutely love them, and even with discomfort I have described, I would do it all over again. I don't know of anyone else who has had this done and online I could only find people who had just had it done and were happy or had them removed. For me I am happy with them and would not ever have them removed, but it has come with these issues explained above.
I hope this helps and please message me if you want to know anything else!

Hi, I’m interested in getting this done - when you mean concious of the implant all the time - would you say it’s similar to getting your ear pierced? Just be wary of it constantly.
Do you regret getting it done or would you 100% recommend it? I am 23 and only one of my ears sticks out and keep going on and off the idea of having it done.

Yes, like you have a piercing and you need to remember it’s there. Going about my daily things I don’t feel any discomfort, can pull jumpers over my head, if my ears got caught it wouldn’t hurt or anything. But direct pressure onto the implant rubs and gets sore. But like you said it’s similar to a piercing. I would say it depends how much you want it done. I am happy every single day when I see my ears now, and I knew this would be the case before hand. So really it depends, is it worth it for you ?

Hi, Thank you for your review, it has pointed out something I didn't know about. I am just about to go through with this operation. I am worried about uncomfortablness when trying to sleep. Does this get better or is this a permanent thing for everyone.
Thank you
Thank you

I put £1750 it was actually £2750!! Sorry about that! I had it done at one of the Spire hospitals in the UK. They do finance plans as well if you wanted to go that route. Other than that, everything is still going well.

Hi, I am getting surgery done September. I am really worried about it. Can you tell me, do you have any problems sleeping on your side., does it hurt your ear. Thanks Brian...

Hi Brian, I bought a memory foam travel pillow so that my ear could be in the hole when I was lying on my side. It was really worth its weight in gold just after surgery because you will not be able to lie on your ear.

Hi, Thank you for your reply, much appreciated. I have option earfold which looks quick an simple. Or operation cutting behind ear. I am worried that down the line that sleeping on your ear is a permanent pain, with earfold. Has your pain gone or do you still need pillow permanently.

Hi, I don’t need to use the travel pillow now but my ears do often get sore after sleeping on them. It’s quite hard to explain, someone previously said is it like having an ear piercing which I said yes to. Sometimes your earrings can get sore if you lie on them funny or whatever. For me it’s like that. I don’t think you are going to have implants in your ears and completely forget about them unfortunately x

I had earfold several years ago and unfortunately the clip on my right ear forced its way out and I had to have it removed. The surgeon said I would have to pay again to have another earfold implanted so I chose to have surgery to correct my ear.
I’m am just returning this moment from my follow up appointment and everything you have mentioned Is exactly what I have experienced up until now. I’ve slept on a memory foam aeroplane pillow every night since my procedure 3 months ago. Visibly everything looks fine and has healed very well. The clips do not hold my ears back quite as far as I would have hoped for but they've definitely shown a descent improvement. I do occasionally roll off my pillow whilst sleeping creating the extra pressure on my ears which wakes me up 2 or 3 times a night. If I stay around my girlfriends and manage to forget it il be sure to wake up almost half a dozen times due to the pain of the clips. My ears feel fine just the same when no pressure is applied but if I touch down from the top of the back of my ear where the top clips are in place they are always sore. My right ear gives off a slight cutting sensation when touched. I’ve explained all of this to the surgeon and he has told me that I could well be damaging my cartilages and tearing in to them with the teeth fitted on to the clips. He’s basically said to have them Taken out within the next three months before they cause any long term damage. These things cost me £4600 for 4 clips at the private clinic in Harley street London. The doctor mentioned that if I take them out sooner rather than later and do not damage my cartilage too much, osteoplasy could be undertaken but if I leave them in and damage my cartilages I could well have no other option of treatment. These will obviously incur a lot of healing time for two further procedures which will be both the removal and osteoplasy, opening up the insertions again and more money. I can’t believe I didn’t realise beforehand inserting a foreign body in my ear such as a clip with teeth would not cause problems whenever sleeping on my side. Currently debating whether to take them out or not? Overall I probably wouldn’t recommend earfold to anyone as I’m pretty sure everyone would receive the same side effects. Just wondered if anyone else has been in this position and what they decided to do about it? And whether they think they made the right choice? Thanks
