Earlobe Repair for Pixie Ear
WORTH IT
Following facelift surgery 4 years ago performed by another surgeon, as my facelift started to relax, I developed ‘pixie’ ears which really bothered me, particularly when wearing my hair up in a ponytail. Both ears appeared to be attached to the sides of my face and I had no lobes; the right one being worse than the left. I felt conscious my ears were a dead giveaway to having had facelift surgery.
Whilst having a lip lift procedure with Mr Coombes in March 2019 (review to follow), I discussed an earlobe repair and had the surgery four weeks later. The surgery itself was done as a simple in-office procedure under local anaesthetic which took approximately three quarters of an hour. I felt no pain from either the numbing injections or the surgery and have felt no pain or discomfort following the repair 2 weeks ago today.
As I could not take time off work to make a return trip to have the stitches removed a week later (I live several hours drive from Worthing, UK where Mr Coombes has his clinic), I’d asked for dissolvable stitches to be put in. Immediately following surgery, Mr Coombes showed me my ears in the mirror...I had lobes.
That evening and the following few evenings, I’d intended to sleep on my back propped up on pillows. However, as I was in no pain, I forgot and ended up sleeping on my side from day one. On day three, I think I may have disturbed the stitches and I had a slight bleed in one lobe which scabbed over the next few days.
A week following the surgery, I unconsciously tucked my hair behind my ear. My male work colleague asked what I'd done to my ear, I just said that my hooped earrings had caught on something and ripped out! Now, if this had been a female friend, I'm sure I'd have had to explain every minute detail of how this had occurred, but as men don't usually appreciate the subtleties of earring-wearing, he just said 'Ooh painful' and carried on eating his sandwich. So, if anyone is looking for an excuse after earlobe repair surgery...
At the two-week mark, my lobes are healing nicely. I was given antibiotic cream to use from the start, but to be honest I’ve just left them to heal naturally (probably due to laziness more than anything).
Mr Coombes advised not to wear earrings for at least 3 weeks, but being the rebel that I am, I’ve worn them on 3 occasions with no adverse reaction.
Now the mild swelling has subsided, I can see more clearly my emerging ear lobes and can't stop looking at them in the mirror. The white stitches are still there, but not too obvious. The nurse gave me some silicone scar gel to use on the ear lobes once they’ve healed, which I believe really helps to minimise any potential scarring from surgery.
So far, so good. My ears, despite the remaining stitches are looking normal; no signs of any pixie ear whatsoever. I'm so looking forward to wearing my hair up again without feeling conscious of my ears and the thought of people pondering the 'has she, hasn't she had a facelift?’ dilemma'.
