Double Jaw Surgery- First Week

Just to start, I got a BSSO on the mandible and a Laforte I on the maxillary. In others words, the moved both my upper and lower jaw forward by a controlled fracture “double jaw surgery”. This occurred on 1/4/2024.

I was getting the surgery for sleep apnea and a malocclusion. I also just had a weak chin and was hoping it would look better. The procedure required me to wear braces before it occurred for about 14 months to give me an overbite so when they moved my lower jaw forward it would align better with my upper jaw. They expect I may need them for another 6-8 months after the procedure to make sure everything is in place.
I stayed one night in the hospital. I was under general anesthesia and most of the pain I had afterwards was from the tube in my throat. Sore throat for several days! They also put the tube in your nose which caused a lot of nose bleeds afterwards.
But the pain wasn’t too bad. I honestly didn’t have too much pain in the jaw at all. Most of the annoyance during revovery the first week
Was from the swelling and the inability to open my mouth. The caloric intake had to be from very watery liquids. Nothing with “chunks” or it would get stuck and you’d be unable to put anything else in your mouth. I had to crush all my meds too and drink them- the taste is NOT pleasant.
The swelling was the worst day 3 and 4 for me and significantly improvement after. Those were also the most painful days.
I was able to walk and do most my normal daily things that first week. Of course, it’s wise to take it easy and rest. I also lost 7lbs in 6 days!
Tomorrow is my check up. Hoping I’ll have more control on how tight my bands are and if I can loosen them to eat. More to follow!!!
