WORTH IT
My name is Samed. For years, I thought I simply had a small head — but in reality, it was my jaw that wasn’t growing properly. I looked almost like a character from Bob’s Burgers: while my head and body developed normally, my jaw stayed behind.
I often worried about ending up like some of my older relatives who had only a double chin. My jaw was so small that whenever I chewed, it seemed to shrink even more, almost disappearing. Because it sat so far back, it pressed on my esophagus and trachea. Eating became difficult; I needed plenty of water with every meal just to swallow. Lying on my back was even worse — if I didn’t consciously push my jaw forward, my breathing slowed, and it felt like my own jaw was suffocating me. Imagine pressing your hand against your throat — that’s exactly how it felt.
As I grew older, the problem only intensified. Puberty made appearance more important, and my jaw became a major source of anxiety. On top of that, it was asymmetrical. I forced my lower jaw forward constantly throughout the day, but keeping it there required strength, and letting it fall back was painful. People would comment on it whenever they saw me eat, always pointing out how small my jaw looked.
I visited doctor after doctor, hoping to find a solution before things got worse, but no one wanted to take on such a complex case. Then, by chance, I noticed my neighbor’s daughter had undergone jaw surgery. I asked about it right away, and that’s how I met orthodontic surgeon Dr. Zeynep Tunçer. Together, we began planning, and the process continued with Dr. Mehmet Cömert.
That’s how I ended up having double chin surgery. At first, it felt daunting and overwhelming, but the results have been truly life-changing. The relief I’ve experienced — both physically and psychologically — is beyond words. Now I can breathe with ease, and my reflection gives me confidence instead of anxiety. My upper and lower jaws have been repositioned forward, my chin asymmetry corrected, and something unexpected happened: for years, I thought my nose tilted to the right, but once my upper jaw was properly aligned, my nose and chin both straightened, pointing forward perfectly.
The transformation has been nothing short of magnificent.
