- Procedure and recover was painless- Dr. Newen has terrible bedside manner, very rushed and impatient
- My creases are extremely high and unnatural- sausage lids
- Did not diagnosis my ptosis which should have been addressedÂ
- Front desk staff are snobby and rude, nurses are kind and sweet
- I do not recommend Dr. Newen for double eyelid surgery if you want to look naturalÂ
- Worst decision of my life
The procedure I received was Asian eyelid surgery with Dr. Newen. I wanted to wait a full 6++ months post-op before writing this to allow for full healing so I can give an objective review. I scheduled a consult with him in person to discuss my eyelid surgery. I first met with one of the patient consultants - I found her to be nice enough but very knowledgeable about the procedure and did not have clear answers to some of my questions. Some of the information she gave me directly contradicted what I later heard from Dr. Newen.I asked her to see more photos of his work, she referred me to look at his Instagram. What kind of plastic surgeons office doesn't have extensive examples of their work to show patients? She said they were "transferring" computer systems so she couldn't access them? OK. She did bring in another member of the staff who had the same procedure done and she did have beautiful results so that calmed my inner voice who told me to walk away.I waited another 30-45mins for Dr. Newen, who did not apologize for being late. He came off quite condescending to me when I asked him questions about the surgery. He urged me to opt for the full incisional procedure vs. the stitching- which I'll never know if that was the right call. He used the wire tool to demonstrate how my eyes would look with the operation, which I thought looked good. He seemed frustrated during the consult since I had some hesitation with the incisional method (I wanted a very natural look) and insisted he's never had an unhappy patient. That should have been a red flag since I now know this isn't true of any surgeon, no matter how talented they are. His answers were very indirect and long winded, as if he was lecturing me. I walked out not feeling great about my appointment but I only had a small window in my schedule that I could get the surgery.
Regardless of my hesitation, I decided to move forward and schedule the surgery based on timing. I booked the date and reserved a specific time using a credit card deposit. I had my husband arrange his schedule so he could drive me and pick me up based on the appointment time. As the date drew closer, I received a confirmation for a different time so I called to confirm. They said my original time was taken so they moved me to a different time. Um what? Why did they take my credit card deposit?? Ok it's fine, I made it work. Â
A few weeks pass and I had not received any pre-op paperwork or instructions. I ended up calling them a couple days before my surgery to inquire about pre-op and day-of instructions. 2 more calls later, I finally received the paperwork, which they should have provided me 2 weeks before the surgery. There were certain things they said not to take 2 weeks leading up to the surgery- why was this not sent to me earlier then?? I took an aspirin a couple days before when that should have been avoided. I was also supposed to take arnica supplements beforehand but no one ever told me. Â
Day of surgery I checked in and met with the patient counselor, I showed her some photos of how I would like my eyes to look but she said to wait to show the doctor. I paid for the procedure and went down to the surgical center. The staff was friendly and I waited about 20-30 mins before I was asked to change and wait for the doctor. Dr. Newen came in and asked what I would like my crease height to be.He used a tool to show me options, I asked for a medium height and really emphasized I wanted a NATURAL look and I don't want to look fake or "done". He said he only does natural work and marked my eyes. I was not able to show him any photos since I was asked to store my personal belongings in the locker already- nor did he ask me to show him photos. After he marked my lids, he did not show me the marks in a mirror or do any kind of measurements. The entire conversion was maybe 5 mins, it felt rushed and not thorough but it was too late- off I went to the OR.
The procedure itself was painless and quick and I only felt some tugging. Afterward he was done, I was comfortable and changed back into my street clothes. When I looked in the mirror while changing, I was shocked at how swollen and large my eyelids were. I told myself this should be normal and it will take a few months to settle.
We left and grabbed sushi after (I wore a hat and sunglasses). Over the next few days I followed post-op instructions diligently, I iced and gently cleaned the incision as instructed. I slept with my head propped up to reduce swelling. I went in for my 4 day follow up and the nurse said everything looked great. One new instruction was not to eat seafood. She said that causes worsened scarring. Why wasn't that told to me before?? I had been eating a lot of seafood (sushi) and other high iodine foods since the surgery since I didn't now. Â
The weeks following the surgery were difficult since my eyelids were so high and swollen. Not painful, but I had a hard time looking at myself. I woke up daily checking to see if my creases lowered. Now at 6++ months, I'm devastated to say they have not. The creases are unnaturally high, deep and my eyelids look like sausages. I texted Jane every couple weeks to express my concerns and she said to give it time- she eventually stopped responding.I went to follow up directly with Dr. Newen and he kept staying they look good and I should top worrying, my expectations are too high. He completely disregarded my concerns and seemed annoyed I wasn't happy with my results. I was also concerned that I had ptosis. He said since I'm Asian, that's just how my eyes look. (??) I even asked about a revision surgery and he said it is very difficult to do and I needed to wait for a full 1 year but doesn't recommend it. After all this, Jane did make sure I knew they would be an additional charge for the revision... GREAT thanks. Â
I hate my eyelids so much that I scheduled appointments with several well respected and world renowned oculoplastic surgeons and flew to LA multiple times for consults. Keep in mind each consult is $200+ in addition to travel costs.  Although they had varying degrees of recommendations for revision surgery, they ALL agreed my creases were placed too high and I also have moderate ptosis. Yes, ptosis- something Dr. Newen insisted I do not have. I'm now planning to have revision surgery and ptosis correction to try and achieve a better and more natural result- the cost will be any where from 5k-10k. Â
On a more personal note, I've been quite depressed and self conscious since my surgery with Dr. Newen. My eyes were beautiful before, I wish I never gave in to my insecurities and had my eyes disfigured. I've run into friends I haven't seen in years and they immediately asked if my eyes were done- and NOT in a good way. I can't stand to look at photos of myself and it's ruined my self esteem. When I tried to voice my concerns to Dr. Newen, he completely blew me off and lacked any form of compassion. I was clearly upset and unhappy. He actually told me I should wear more eye makeup if I didn't like how my eyes looked. Long story short, worst decision of my life.

I feel really bad hearing your story. I also had already twice botched des with epicanthoplasty yet didn’t get the result I want. 2 months ago I proceeded my first ever rhino in Seoul at regen and really like my results. I also discussed possible revision for my eyes with my surgeon – dr.Lee and now getting ready to get it done too. I’m pretty sure that he’ll finally give me the result I always wanted and fix my eyes. Hope you can find a good doctor to proceed revision if you consider it, best of luck!

Hi,
Would you give info later after eye revision with Dr. Lee (Regen) ? I went to Seoul korea 2 months ago, my eye un-even shape/crease but I didn't do at Regen, I went consult with Dr. Lee, he is very nice, I might need revision for my eyes later, and would like some more info if you'll get good results from Dr. Lee. Thanks.

I'm sorry you are going through this! :( I wanted to get my eyes done, too but now I'm scared. Have you gotten a consult from Dr. Goretti Taghva? I havent personally gone to her but I think she does eyelid corrections & her consults are free! regardless, I hope your eyes continue to change/heal & hopefully it will be the result you want!

Hi Sorry youre going through this. I had a botched des 4 years ago and im still looking for a doctor for revision. It took over a year for my swelling to go down. Your eyes still look very much swollen. They will most likely look a lot more natural after 1 year. Good luck!

Hi whoever reads this I had a really bad result from him too. After almost three years of being unhappy, I went to Dr. Goretti Ho in Newport Beach. It looks so much better now and she's a really nice, honest doctor who specializes in eyes which is important. Unfortunately the previous doctor left a bad scar on my left eye which couldn't be 100 percent fixed but now they are even when open! Hopefully this helps because I know what it feels like to be super unhappy with the result.

Thanks so much for your comment. Would you mind sending me pics of how your eyes look now after revision with Dr Ho?

Here are some before and afters from what he did to me. I asked for very natural looking creases and he said he "only does natural work". He barely looked at my wish photos and didn't even show me the markings in the mirror before I was whisked off to surgery. After one year, the creases never settled and constantly looked puffy, deep and sausage like.

REVISION UPDATE!
tkc9December 18, 2020
I want to provide a follow up- After exactly one year, I went in for a revision with another provider. Â It was a difficult 365 days to wait as I felt anguish daily as I looked in the mirror. Â I was so upset with what he did to my eyes. Â My new doc insisted I wait the full year to ensure it's fully healed and settled before a revision, which I understand. Â I will review my revision seperately but I want to demonstrate what could be done with cases like mine.
During my mulitple follow ups with Dr. Newen, he insisted that I didnt need revision, my eyes looked fine and I didn't have any ptosis. Â He also said revision would be too difficult and almost impossible to do. Â I was close to tears after each visit, but he clearly didn't care about my botched results. Â When I went in for my revision, my new doctor measured my eyes at 12mm and 14mm! Â I was shocked at how aggressive he went with my delicate asian eyelids and the crease height is far outside the range for asian anatomy. Â On top of that, the creases were uneven by 2mm! Â Of course, he didn't measure and spent all of 2 minutes carelessly marking my eyelids. Â My eyelids were also constantly droopy and I looked tired all of the time.
After my revision, my said doctor said when she opened my eyelids up she found the ligaments weren't properly attached to the muscle and were hanging on haphazardly with scar tissue hence my droopy eyelids.  He also removed almost all the fat in my eyelids- luckly I didn't need a fat transfter.  I may need some filler as I get older to prevent hollowing.
I'm so fortunate that I was able to get his work corrected, as these cases are complex and not all providers are trained on these revision techniques. Â I wanted to give hope out there for others in my situation- it is possible and don't give up hope!
I added a photo of Dr. Newen's results vs. my revision. Results speak for itself.

OMG, you look amazing. This gives me hope! I am having a terrible experience and need to know who your revision doctor is. Blessings to you for having it corrected so nicely

Hello, can you please share who did your revision? I have almost the same exact problem as you! Need help. SOS! Thank you.

Good luck on your revision surgery!
Good news for you is that revising to get a higher crease is MUCH easier easier than trying to lower them. Best of luck to you!
