Incisional Eyelid Surgery Review

TL;DR I recommend Dr. Lay for Double Eyelid Surgery.
Make sure to schedule your consultation about 2 months prior because he is very popular for eyelid surgery.

A little background: late-20s Asian woman with asymmetrical eyelids. I had one monolid and one double eyelid that had a parallel crease. After doing research on clinics from California and Korea, I ultimately decided that I wanted to have my surgery done locally. I made appointments with 3 surgeons for consultations and decided to proceed with Dr. Lay for my surgery. I chose Dr. Lay because he was the most confident and I felt he understood what I wanted as my end result. The incisional eyelid surgery would take place almost 2 months after my consultation.

The experience: The surgery was painless and I was awake under local anesthesia. Immediately after surgery, my eyes were very red, swollen, and tight. After 1 week, the stitches were removed and that was when majority of the bruising subsided. After 1 month, my eyes were still very tight and swollen and I was worried because I was going on vacation very soon. Dr. Lay knew this and scheduled me in to see him before my vacation. He gave me steroid shots to help with the swelling. These shots were the most painful part of the overall experience. It felt like a giant needle went into my eyelid followed by a cold thick fluid sensation. However, hours after that steroid shot, the swelling had reduced substantially. In about 1.5 months, my eyes were no longer irritably tight. Although my eyelashes were still separated and pointing up, my eyes looked very natural. At 1.5 months, no one was able to tell I had any surgery done.

My thoughts: For the first month post op, I was feeling a little anxious. My eyes were very swollen and tight. I was worried that this would’ve been the end result. However, I was patient and knew that this was part of the healing process. At about 1.5 months, I was very happy with the results. The tightness was about 90% gone and I was back to my regular pre op routine.

Dr. Lay was very helpful throughout the entire experience. He helped me achieve very natural results that even my outspoken parents and siblings couldn’t tell I had surgery done. He was also available when I had questions and concerns.

Some tips:
- Don’t freak out if your eyes look too swollen and tight. It’s part of the process.
- Invest in face shield visors. For $8 on Amazon, you get 100 disposable shields. These shields were a shower lifeline for me as they prevent water from getting near your eyes.
- Don’t overdo it on the kiwis. Diarrhea is not fun
- Kimchi has seafood and sometimes shellfish
