My metal braces were put on in early September. So far so good. I feel I have adjusted well. Cleaning is time consuming, especially flossing. I am keeping my mind on the eventual outcome. I have an open bite that I have lived with. The teeth clenching while I slept was becoming more and more problematic. Had to have a gum graft last year in 2017. I’m due for double jaw surgery in the late summer of 2019. Pictures to follow soon.

Since having the braces put on in early September 2018, I am not experiencing as much neck or jaw pain. I was surprised and happy with the immediate results. I am going to see the orthodontist on October 17 for my first adjustments. I heard taking advil or another pain reliever is advised.

Back in 1979, when I had my second braces-go-round (adolescent ortho failed), I had awful pain the first few days after each tightening. NSAIDs had recently been discovered to ease menstrual cramping—the first one was prescription Ponstel, then Zomig (also prescription). A friend of my husband & me who was one of his fellow first-year internal med. residents said that Motrin helped her cramps and it had just gone OTC—and much cheaper to boot. I tried it and it worked for me. So I figured I’d give it a try at my next ortho visit. Popped a couple beforehand and again at bedtime—and when I awoke the pain was much less than the morning after previous visits, and then lessened further. I could eat steak again the next day. Told my orthodontist, and he said he might write a journal article about it—asked if it was okay to mention my case. Never did find out if he followed through, but I was a much more compliant patient when not in pain!

First adjustment, New blue elastics

I had my first adjustment on October 17, 2018. Dr. N. took the wire off the brackets. I brushed my teeth and then flossed without the wire for the first time since September 6! Flossing with braces is time consuming but worth it! I was told that I’m doing a good job of keeping my teeth clean. I did have one broken bracket on the bottom arch. Oops, I don’t know how I did that! It was a quick fix as the Doctor just rebonded the bracket to my tooth. I didn’t find it painful at all. However when I had dinner and bite down on my food, that’s when I felt the discomfort. The first couple of days I stuck to soft food. I took an Advil one day but other than that it is just a minor discomfort. I do have to eat very slowly and carefully. I need to take small bites and cut up my food well.
