Displaced Plica After Strabismus Surgery
I've undergone a strabismus surgery on my left eye under the care of Dr. Apatsa Lekskul at the Ramathibodi Hospital in Thailand about 3 weeks ago. Since I flew to Thailand on a short trip, I only had 2 weeks to spend on the procedure and recovery. I told my doctor about the situation and she was kind enough to fit me into her very tight schedule. However, my surgery was scheduled 5 days prior to my departure flight, so my follow-up visit was only 4 days after the procedure itself. The surgery was very short in that it lasted only about 30 - 45 minutes. I removed my eye patch the day after the surgery and I could see that I had developed a fleshy tissue on the inner portion of my left eye as if the muscle there had been pulled too far towards the iris. When I asked Dr Apatsa about it, she said that it was normal and that it'd shrink back to the normal position in time. Well, it's been almost 3 weeks and after comparing the pictures of my eyes I've taken since my surgery, I don't see any improvement. I'm rather concerned about it since 1) I'm back in the states now and won't be able to fly back for a corrective procedure for at least a while, and 2) I don't know how much it'd cost to surgically repair it in the US. Since this is the second time I've undergone this procedure (the first time being about 10 years ago), I also can't tell if this is an expected result or if it's a true surgical complication. However, it seems to be consistent with the google images of medial conjunctival scarring. I truly wished I had asked for the doctor's contact information to find out what I should do to correct this issue before I left the country. I also forgot to mention that I decided to book her since she's supposed to be specialized in strabismus surgery. As a matter of fact, she's the department head of the eye center at the Ramathibodi hospital (one of Thailand's top medical institutions). I'm distraught by this complication and hope that everyone who reads my story would take the time to speak with their practitioners about the possible complications after the procedure and whether there'd be any compensation. As for me, I'm hoping to contact my eye doctor and get a referral to an ophthalmologist in my area soon.
