Dermawand Pro

This is a long review (because I wish there were more like these out there online), so I put headers so people can jump around if they wish.

Background

Like everyone else who has been working remotely due to COVID, I am a victim of the constant video calls, which has given me a lot of time to look at myself. I'm also getting a bit older (okay, 35 is not old, but I'm not ready to be mid-30s! I can barely believe I'm already 30!) so I am starting to pay attention to my skin. These video calls have not been helping! I tried a few creams from the drug store (L' oreal anti-aging for overall moisture which dried up WHILE I was putting it on, Some Olay eye cream for these puffy bags under my eye that didn't do anything (I learned these are malar bags), and now I'm on a generic Palmer's cocoa butter regimen where I just spread that all over my face and body post-shower), but I'm really trying to slow down the process of sagging. I am not so interested in wrinkles because I don't really have a huge concern for those. I'm not interested in injections. I've looked up a lot of procedures I might try but I didn't want to do anything permanent just yet, and honestly I can't find a doctor with work I like in my area or time for recovery (bc of the video calls, of course).

So I was shopping on Amazon and viola! A Mecca of anti-aging devices, most of which I am sure don't work too well, but I want to at least feel like I'm doing something to slow this process. So I checked out a few and wasn’t convinced so I got off of there. Then I remembered NuFace - microcurrent. I looked them up but saw a bunch of horror stories, so I decided microcurrent wasn’t for me. Then looked up Dermawand, which is radio frequency energy. My mom is always talking about raising my frequency/vibration, so I did some research on it. The reviews I saw were mostly good and the bad ones were all about customer service with the odd "I look worse" post here and there.

Some stats about me: 35, Brown skin, oily skin growing up - now kind of dry, allergic to a lot of stuff (foods, Maybelline makeup, ragweed, some creams) so I have pretty sensitive skin, some major wrinkle lines like worry, 11s, crows feet but nothing major.

Purchase

I bought the Pro version on sale for $127 (this includes tax and shipping) from HSN (can we say, kismet?), read the manual and watched about 10 videos from the company as well as other YT reviewers to get a feel of what to do. I took a couple of before pics, put cocoa butter all over my face and went to work.

Usage

So I did what the manual said and tried it on my hand first. I put a little cocoa butter there and it zapped me. However, once I got the device to touch my skin, there was no pain or any real crazy feeling. The buzzing made me internalize vibration, but you really don’t feel much other than the occasional zap when you lift up the device and put it back on your skin. I moved to my face and moved it all around for about a minute or two making so to keep it in contact with my skin as much as possible so I don't get the zap. I have a nose ring and left it in. I just put my finger over it when I got close to it, but I didn’t experience any issues with it in there. After a once-over, I went back and did an up and down zig-zag over my forehead (since I have a few worry lines forming), did a zig-zag between my eyes for the 11s and then went to work on my jawline. I motioned up and down along each side about 10-20 times total. I have very low eye lids (I probably will need surgery on that one day just to see!), so I motioned along my eyebrows in hopes of getting some lift action. Then I was all set! I unplugged it (bc there’s no on/off switch) and took a little alcohol swab to clean the tip of the device and put cap on it.

Results
I did that process morning and night for the past two days, and I have not really experienced any results. I plan to give it more time and update as I go along. I am still on level one and really do not want to get much higher. I figure I’ll stay between levels one and three for a long time because I’m still suspicious of the RF technology so close to my brain, in general. I even use my phone on speaker as much as I can to avoid putting my cell phone near my head… So you can imagine my hesitancy rubbing this thing on my forehead and near my eyes!

Initial Reaction

This is where you’ll find my side effects since I haven’t really had any results just yet.
1. The zap is a bit much. I doesn’t hurt; it feels like a slightly stronger static shock. I think the noise doesn’t help (literally “zap”).
2. The buzzing is annoying. I guess I appreciate hearing that it’s working, but I could do without it.
3. The smell is like burning hair - not rainwater or whatever they say in the manual. It’s "burning hair" smell.

The following may be in my head but:
4. I feel like my skin has actually been burned. I don’t see much visually (just a few red spots I must have stayed too long or super sensitive areas), but my skin feels really tight and like it’s hot - even the next morning. I had to put aloe to cool down my skin to the touch.
5. I can taste it. Don’t ask me how, but my tongue has that taste that you get when you've burned your tongue or ate something that hadn’t had the chance to cool. This is also a feeling I have through the next day.
6. My eyes are incredibly dry and irritated. Maybe I got too close to them? I’d think not since I was pretty careful not to get to the place inside my eye bones (both top and bottom).
7. There is a definitive drop off on the sides of my face, and I don’t know if that’s good or bad. This one could mean I’m going to get that snatched jawline I’m looking for or I’ve done some serious damage to the sides of my face.
8. I suggest using an oil-like substance with some real oily characteristics (I’m talking pore-filling, acne-starting kind of oil) or you will be reapplying every 30 seconds. I tried it with aloe gel this morning, and it dried so fast, I had to keep stopping to apply more for each section. I got so fed up, I just washed my face and went back to the cocoa butter for the second pass.

Okay - I will give it a couple more days and then come back with an update and pics.
