Dental Crowns in the Elderly: Worth Every Penny!
I had no dental care as a child; in fact, I didn't even own a toothbrush. I was 8 years old the first time I saw a dentist, and that was to have a decayed molar pulled. I don't know why filling it wasn't an option. By the time I was in my teens, I'd learned to take care of my teeth and gums, but the years of neglect in early childhood caught up with me, and I ended up with a mouth full of composite fillings, especially in my front teeth. In 2019, I broke out part of a filling in one of my front teeth. I wasn't in any pain, but it looked awful and I worried that the tooth itself would break. So I went in the next day to see my regular dentist to have the filling replaced. To my dismay, she said the filling couldn't be replaced, and that the only solution was to crown a minimum of 4 of my front teeth. When I protested that just one tooth was broken, she said a minimum of 4 would have to be done to get the crowns to match. The estimate was very expensive, so I decided to seek a second opinion. That's how I found Dr. Wright, who has the highest credential the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry awards: Dr. Wright is an Accredited Fellow.
His staff was friendly and helpful when I called, and I was glad that I was able to complete all of the new patient paperwork online. But I was really impressed when I actually went in for my appointment. Dr. Wright introduced himself and asked me to tell him what brought me to the office. He listened patiently, and examined my teeth. He told me I was not a candidate for veneers, because my teeth were too damaged. He also told me that to get a good result, I'd need to have a minimum of 7 crowns on my top front teeth, not 4 as my original dentist had suggested. He was the third dentist whom I consulted, but he was the only one who immediately told me, upfront, what the approximate cost would be, per tooth, for the crowns. That was incredibly helpful, and I was impressed that he did that. In addition, once he began to explain various options (and there were several), he handed me a mirror, so I could see in my mouth what we were talking about as he examined and discussed each of the teeth in question. He didn't try to sell me on any particular option. He explained each one, and emphasized that what I wanted to do was entirely up to me. And last but not least, as he was finishing up, he asked if I would like to have the broken tooth repaired "while you're here anyway". My original dentist had told me that a repair wouldn't be possible, so I was totally impressed that he was able to do it right then and there. He said, "I wouldn't want you leaving my office with that broken tooth." The repair was better than the original work, and the fact that his skill level was so great that he was able to repair that tooth in just a few minutes, and that he cared enough to offer to do so, when I wasn't even a regular patient convinced me that he was the right dentist for me. I had him do my 7 crowns. After the temporaries were in, he had me live with them for a week, to see how I liked them. I decided I'd like my teeth to be somewhat longer, so he added length to the temporaries so I could see what that would be like. I was happy with the result, so the order for the crowns was modified accordingly. I am over the moon with the end result. I'm retired and living on a fixed income, and I had to take money out of my savings to have this work done, but, as we say in Texas, "I'd do it again in a New York minute". The only regret I have is that I didn't have this done sooner. Having a good smile makes you feel so much better about yourself.
