Best facelift surgeon for out-of-town patients, jowls gone & jawline is tight

Best Facelift Surgeon for an Out-of-Town Patient

WORTH IT
Over the past few years I noticed that I was getting really bad jowling - as well as some less-than-attractive eye bags. It was really aging me and I was determined to do something about it.

From my research I decided to go with a deep plane facelift (and maybe fat transfer and blepharoplasty). However i also knew this wasn’t a quickie, simple procedure. It's a major surgery - and a huge thing for anyone to undertake. Like many women considering this procedure, I wanted to do this once - and do it right with the best surgeon I could find. The thought of messing up my face with a bad facelift absolutely terrified me.

While I'm Canadian, I currently live in a small country in Europe. The surgeons here are not up to the level where I'd trust them with my face. So I spent a year and a half researching, contacting doctors from all over the UK, Canada and the US - trying to find the right surgeon.

The problem I found when looking for the right surgeon is that you need to find a doctor who can give you 2 things. First (of course), they have to have the surgical skills and experience necessary to give you the best results. But second, they also have to be committed to aftercare and not abandon you after the surgery (and after they've gotten your money).

As an out-of-town patient, this was particularly concerning for me. I wanted to know the doctor wouldn’t disappear once I’d flown home - if I then had a question or concern for him.

I ultimately contacted about 12 different surgical offices with questions. From there I narrowed it down to 4 surgeons that I actually wanted to book for a skype consultation.

During the course of my research, Dr. Mansher Singhs name came up quite a few times. I was looking for the highest rated doctors (and he's at the top on that list). He had some of the best reviews I'd ever seen on Realself. But I was hesitant and I'll admit, a bit biased. I thought that surely any doctor with that many amazing reviews in the heart of New York City was going to be arrogant. Or he'd be dismissive of someone coming from another country (as that had been my experience with 2 other surgeons so far).

But after Skype consults with the 4 different facelift surgeons that I'd chosen, I didn't feel comfortable with any of them. So I was like - "Ok, well, what do I have to lose?" I then requested a consult with Dr. Singh through real self and he personally got back to me within a couple of hours - setting up a whatsapp consult for the next day.

Within 5 minutes of our consult, I realized I could not have been more wrong in my previous assumptions. Dr. Singh was kind, sincere, patient and really listened to me (I had a few medical issues that we had to consider with the surgery. And he was more than willing to take time and discuss these with me). I never felt rushed and - even though I knew he must be very busy - he never made me feel like he had to move on to someone else.

A few days later and after another Whatsapp consultation with Dr. Singh - I felt comfortable enough to put down a deposit to go ahead with the surgery.

Another thing I appreciated was that - as someone planning to fly in - with a variable work schedule at home - I wasn't exactly sure when I could get to New York. But Dr. Singh was more than willing to be flexible and work with me when it came to booking dates.

On to the surgery. I flew in a few days before and met Dr. Singh in his office. He was warm, sincere and exactly the way he came across on our phone consults. We went over what we were trying to achieve, what I could expect, aftercare etc. I had chosen to do the facelift, upper and lower bleph, fat transfer and co2 laser.

I appreciated the fact that Dr. Singh didn't sugar coat it. He told me straight out that it was a lot to do to my face. And it wasn't going to be a walk in the park for the first few days. But he assured me that it would get better day by day and the results would be amazing (and he was right about everything).

The day of the surgery I was nervous but not as nervous as I thought I'd be. I knew I had chosen an excellent surgeon - and Dr. Singh himself is very calming.

I had chosen the "wide-awake" option that Dr. Singh offers - mainly because I don't like being put under due to past surgical experiences. However if I did the surgery again, I'd probably opt for the sedation. It's a long surgery and while I didn't feel pain - mentally it's challenging to lay on the table knowing what's happening to you (I'm a bit of a baby I guess).

But Dr. Singh was constantly checking in on me. He knew I was nervous and he kept talking to me - asking me about my job, my family, vacations etc, trying to take my mind off things. He did all of this while performing surgery. While he was there, he even removed a scar on my neck that I'd had for years from another (non cosmetic) surgery. He was just amazing the whole time.

Post-op, yes the first 3 days were definitely a challenge (the painkillers were a godsend).

But Dr. Singh was constantly checking in on me almost every day - and scheduling follow-up visits to monitor my progress.

Things quickly started to get better after the first 3 days. Dr. Singh told me that the pain would drop off drastically after the first 3 days and of course he was right on. By the 4th day I didn’t need the prescription painkillers - only extra strength Tylenol. And after a week, I was off Tylenol as well.

The swelling itself was intense for the first couple of weeks (you swell more with multiple procedures and especially fat transfer). But, just as Dr. Singh told me, the swelling continued to go down a little bit every day.

It's now been about a month and a half. First of all, I will say Dr. Singh has blown me out of the water - both with his surgical skills and with his aftercare. These were the two things as I said above, that you really need to have a successful major surgery like this. I've had more followups (or even just text "check-ins") with him than any other surgeon I've ever had. He's never too busy and gets back to me within a day when I text him a question.

He understands that this surgery isn't just physical - but there are mental aspects to it as well (changing your face, even with temporary swelling can be stressful for anyone). And he checks on you to make sure you're doing well in both areas.

As far as the surgery results - they’re amazing. I knew they’d be good but I wasn’t expecting them to be this good. My jowls are gone, my jawline is tight and I no longer have the start of the loose skin under my neck (the dreaded turkey neck that was fast coming on). The bags under my eyes that were aging me so badly are also gone. There is still some swelling and tightness on the sides of my face (which is normal and will keep going down). But with my hair down it’s not noticeable to anyone around me.

I feel like I'm looking at my 35-year-old self in the mirror. It's amazing - and sometimes a little surreal. I still look like me - but just a much younger version.

Having gone through everything and coming out the other side I have to say that I’m so so glad I chose Dr Singh. I wouldn’t go anywhere else. I knew he was really skilled going in because of all my research. So I knew that I would get great results. But I also didn’t realize how much I would need a doctor that would also be there during the recovery process, checking on me both physically and mentally.

And I’m also grateful that he and his office made the process so easy for me as an out of town patient. They answered all my questions before I flew in and were really wonderful at accommodating my schedule. No regrets - I’m looking forward to seeing the final results in another few months.
