WORTH IT$6,500
I had wanted a tummy tuck for over 30 years. My kids are age 45, 38 & 34. I am 5'5" and my current weight is about 150.
The first Surgeon……
My TT journey started in May 2014 with a TT & Lipo to back/bra roll area and arm pit (axillary). I paid just over 10K for the May procedures and the surgery was performed by a cosmetic surgeon. The surgeon failed to include muscle repairs (plication). He never mentioned this decision to me which he made during surgery. By the time I discovered the "mistake", he had left the practice. Yes, I consider the lack of plication to be a "mistake" in judgement on his part since I had 3 kids and was age 63 at that time. I had lost 30lbs and my weight before the first tuck on 5/5/14 was 163. I was just ok with the outcome as I was left with extra skin and a small pouch just above my incision which he had said he could correct with lipo. At least my large overhang was gone & I was happy with that, however I still had to hide my stomach in clothes due to the pouch. Because I was unhappy I went on-line to see other results for comparison and found RealSelf. I had limited my searches before for fear that I would cancel my long awaited surgery due to on-line horror stories. Hindsight, & lesson learned, research, research, research. Did I say research??? My fault for not doing enough research to understand the difference between a board certified "cosmetic" surgeon and a board certified "plastic" surgeon. Of course I'll never know if the cosmetic surgeon could have fixed his mistake to my satisfaction or not. I was not willing to follow him to his next practice and give him another shot at my body. His communication skills were obviously lacking. I did speak with him by phone after my corrective surgery because I just needed to know what he was thinking in leaving out the plication when I paid for a full tuck. He said he decided it was not worth the risk and in his opinion would not add to the aesthetic result. Huh??? I was and am in good health and the result is so much better after my second tuck (revision). Perhaps in his hands, it would have been a risk. So, I am glad I moved on to another surgeon.
My second surgery and the reason for this review….
I joined RealSelf in September 2014 to research TT revisions. I was 4 months post from my first tuck and still unhappy with the leftover skin & pouch. To back up a bit, in Sept. I was also having trouble getting answers from my surgeons office as to the details of my procedure. I was finally able to review the surgery report in November 2014 and found that there was no mention of the muscle plication. I decided to seek consultations from only board certified plastic surgeons and through reading RS responses to question, viewing before and after photos and, reviewing credentials was able to select 3 possible surgeons to visit. Dr. Kenneth Hughes in LA/Culver City was my #1 choice but I did not think I could afford him. I favored him based on his Q&A responses & the info at his web site which included photos & credentials. After months of reading Q&A responses & reviews I felt I had a feel for some of the surgeons. Before RealSelf, I did not feel I was qualified to select a good surgeon on-line. Dr. Hughes was my first in-person consult for the revision and I was so confident & comfortable with him, I booked and paid for my revision that day. I cancelled my other consultations and felt confident that I made the right choice this time. Dr. Hughes did give me a considerable discount for the surgery. I think he felt sorry for me. I was quite distressed at that time. A second full tuck and a second large expense just about had me in tears. The thought of a harder recovery was also scary but I knew I would not be satisfied without the muscle plication. At 64 I did not want to wait and take a chance that my health would not hold up. I exercise regularly and eat clean for the most part so I'm in great health…knock on wood.
The Revision (second full tuck)…
Dr. Kenneth Hughes performed my tuck on 12/9/2014. Just about 6 months ago and I am very happy with my results. Dr Hughes is very confident in his abilities and based on my outcome, he should be. He promised to clean everything up from my previous tuck and he did just that. I had my surgery 2 weeks after booking it so I had no time to stress too much over a second tuck. Prior to the first tuck I wanted to cancel up until the night before. It was just nerves. You know, the old will I die fear. I said my prayers and let God & surgeons do the rest. I will post photos for you all to see my progress. Now, about the pain, wow. The pain was pretty bad in my back and at the point of the drain site. The incision really does not hurt as that area is numb. Remember, those nerves were cut. The back strain from leaning forward to remove tension from the incision is what really hurt in my case. A walker would have been nice but I did not think of it. Never needed a shower chair nor toilet seat riser. My skin was pulled so tight I did not think I would ever stand straight again. Well I did and we all do sooner or later. The dreaded drains. Wow what a pain in the butt the drain was. My first tuck was drainless so I had no experience to draw on. That darn drain pinched my side and was just annoying more than anything. I had just the one drain and it stayed in for 4 full weeks. Nurse Olga is great at what she does and would not remove the dreaded drain until I was less than 25cc over 24 hours. I understand why it had to drain and appreciate not getting a seroma but 4 weeks was a really long time. Ladies, everyone heals at their own pace. Its good to know how others progressed but expect that your bodies will heal in your own unique way and, at your own pace. I was one of the lucky ladies who had no complications. Actually really blessed and I thanked God every day. My mom is 97 and in pretty good health so it helps to have good genes as well. Some things we have no control over so we have to do the best we can with the bodies we were given. Water is your friend. I drink water, water, water and protein shakes. I gave up diet coke 5 years ago and never looked back. I was drinking over 6 cokes a day and when I got serious about my health and started exercising I gave up junk foods, all sodas and all juice. I do cheat on occasion. I'm not qualified to give diet and exercise advise so Im not giving any. I found a trainer and dietician to help me years ago. I will tell you that water is the best aid to healing. I was also told that proper nutrition, not starving yourself is the best in healing. I did not experience any nausea during the painkiller stage which lasted about 2 weeks for me. I always took the pain meds with yogurt to avoid nausea and it worked for me. I was on oxy then switched to tylenol as soon as I could which was a longer time than most I've read about. I was told that not being in pain helped healing so, I took the pain meds without hesitation. I saved a pain pill for drain removal just in case. I ended up not needing it for the removal but, the car ride and long day caused me to take the last pain pill before bed that day. Again, that was about 4 weeks out. Swelling!!! Another Wow! A big Wow!!! Swell hell was definitely alive and well on my journey. I can say it was expected as I had lipo and had experienced swelling during the first tuck. No pain no gain and no swelling no gain I suppose. I'll be 6 months post on June 9th and I still swell the evenings after I workout. There is tightness along the center of the incision line and general swelling all over my stomach. Not bad at all but noticeable. I am back into jeans since about the 4 month mark and prior to that the waist fit but was not comfortable. I hated that pressure on my incision from the waist of the jeans but perhaps that was just in my head. I had so many pants taken in after my second tuck. I went from tight size 14 pre first tuck to about a 6 to 8 in jeans & pants now. I was a pants size 10 between first and second tuck so second tuck did remove inches. Currently I'm a 10 in dresses due to my breasts. Gotta have space for the girls. Bra size went from 38-40C/D to 36D. Would love a breast lift but just going to heal for now. Believe me, I have considered other surgeries to go with the new tummy. I retired the year prior to first tuck so I have lots of time to heal (but not lots of $$).
Well, that's my story and I go back for my final follow-up June 8th and I assume that will be the last of the follow-ups.

I am posting "before" first tuck & 6 months after first tuck which becomes my "before" for second tuck. Also posting some progress photos along with belly button.
Thanks for reading my long story and I'm open to any questions. I am still addicted to this site so I am on here almost daily.
Oops!! having trouble posting photos. Will seek help & keep trying. thanks

Ur second tuck came out great. It,s a shame how these docs can charge us full tt and dont deliver, how can it be called a tt if no plication is done bc tht,s wht a tt is!!

June 1, 2015

Looking good

June 1, 2015
Hey girl. How goes it? I'll text you Tuesday to get an update on your swelling. I'm betting it's better. Waiting is a bear but as you can see from my update my swelling is worse as I amp up the exercise. This too shall pass. Take care hon.

June 1, 2015
Looking very good! I will keep following you.

You look wonderful!!

June 6, 2015
Thanks davis42. I really appreciate the compliment. This is one decision I have not regretted. I stalked this site for many months before posting my story. The before photos were particularly hard to put up on display. But then I'm not that girl with the hanging gut anymore. Best wishes to you and thanks for taking the time to post such a welcome comment. God bless!

June 11, 2015
Wow!!! You look AMAZING, even before your original TT, your skin is gorgeous. Still hard to believe you're in your 50's let alone 60's. I wish you continued happiness and healing. So glad you found a competent surgeon to do the revision.

June 12, 2015
Awww thanks hon. I guess we are always our own hardest critics. I read your review and I'm glad you posted your story. I think your breasts look great. I was thinking I'd get mine lifted and reduced if I had the funds. My mother says I'm never satisfied. I think once we see what can be done, we embrace the idea of a better looking self & go for it. So my dear, you have some decisions to make and I know you will keep us all posted. I also believe that you will make the safest decision for yourself. Don't do too much at once. Recovery for a lot of us has not been easy. I may be wrong but from reading lots of reviews, recoveries vary and are unpredictable. You are in great shape which helps but take care of you first. We will be following your journey & may God take care of you & guide you.
UPDATED FROM Bjonesgm50

Swelling is back
My trainer suggested I contact my surgeon today regarding swelling. We had a weigh-in today and my weight is down another pound however my waist has increased a bit over an I nch in 4 weeks. My body fat is down also. I have been experiencing more than the usual amount of swelling over the past month as we have increased the intensity of my workouts. I continue to wear the Spanx type garment daily but by day's end there is swelling. Not real bad but noticeable.
I contacted Dr. Hughes by email & included photos from this morning and asked if I should halt the weights which really work the abs as well. I received almost an immediate response. He said "intense exercise can provoke swelling for up to a year after surgery." He thinks I am probably fine but if I am concerned I can take time off workouts for a few days and wear the dreaded binder. I've decided to wear the darn binder over the Spanx & push forward with my weight training. I'm no weight lifter so I'm not over extending my abilities & I think I'll be fine. My trainer supervises me carefully. I'm a very fit 64 yr old but with arthritis in both knees which forces limits.
I'd like to add that I got through the TT recovery both times living alone with no help. I am 3 times divorced & very stubborn. My 38 yr old son was my driver to & from surgery and spent the first night as a precaution and as was required by my surgeon. I had the usual rough first few weeks but never felt faint nor in danger of falling or injury. I really don't have a female friend I can count on and I've always been real independent. Thus the divorced status. Lol. Funny my ex wanted to see the after pic I sent to our son who was curious about my scar. The photo was very modest but when I showed it to my ex he quickly sent it to himself before I could grab my phone back. I found that amusing. He got the photo and didn't even have to pay for the surgery. We have been divorced over 30 years and remain somewhat friends. That is when I can stand him. He did not think I needed the surgery of course & I'm just happy I no longer need his approval on anything whatsoever.
Well my TT sisters that's all for now. Hope you are all healing well and I wish you Godspeed.

I am so glad that in the end it all worked out well for you! You look amazing!

Thanks so much. I appreciate that you took the time to read my story. Hope it was helpful in some way. I read about your bad consult. Good to keep in mind that I need to verify free means free if I ever need another doctor. With Dr. Hughes free was just that, free. Of course there is heavy competition in Los Angeles with so many plastic surgeons. Best of luck on your search and keep us posted on your progress. I should have started my review when I first joined. I would have had a journal for myself and could have been more helpful to others. Thanks again honey.

I wore my spanx all day for abt 6 or 7 mos bc i didnt like the was my stomach felt against my clothes, felt so funny! Now im starting frm scratch but i dont mind as long as im satisfied.

Hi ontheflatside. Thanks for reading my post and for taking the time to comment. I read your review and pray you are truly flat to your satisfaction with your revision. I agree, Photos don't really show the true picture. I would agree with you that a revision was your best choice. I know what it's like to be dissatisfied. It becomes your total focus and you feel stuck. My tummy looked a lot worse to me than the photos showed before my revision. Now, the dreaded swelling continues. I wore Spanx type body shapers to help hold my tummy in the past 10 years or so. I have continued to wear them except at night since I had each tuck. I did drop a size since the revision (from 38C to 36D). I'm closer to 34 if I try to fit the waist but the bra area only reduced one size so I have to fit the girls (I did not have BL & could use one but hate the scars). I took a break from exercise the past 3 days to see if the swelling gets better and it has. This tells me that more time is required to eliminate the swelling. I go back to training the day after tomorrow and I know now that I'll just have to endure the swelling until my body has healed a bit longe than my current 6 months. Having two tucks in a 12 month period most likely added to the stress on my body. I'll be happy if swelling is the worst of my issues. I read in your post from someone who had a pseudo urea. That has been one of my main fears since reading about them & viewing the u tube video last year. I still pray I don't develop one. Thanks again for your comment and I'll be following your revision journey. May God continue to bless and keep you. Better healing this time and sorry for your pain but this too shall pass. Take care honey. BJ

Thanks so much. You look great to be so early in recovery. I had my 6 month check up & photos today...err yesterday. It's after midnight already. See my updated post or below for the details. Happy healing to you dear. I'm following your progress.
Update...
Doctor said everything looks great. Swelling that I thought I saw was actually bloating. That got resolved last week when I stopped a supplement that I had added a week or so previously. What a relief. Swelling is very minor now and can persist for up to a year my surgeon told me. I also had a "free" message. Not a lymphatic message just a post surgery message. They said it breaks up scar tissue and prevents lumpy look. The scar and lipo areas are targeted. It felt so good. They also recommended a series of 6 of same once a week for the next six weeks. Not free of course. Cost is $297 if paid in advance or $55 each if not. I paid the $297 and saw it as protecting my initial investment. They also offer a series of cellulite treatments that I am considering to avoid thigh lift. Still deciding on that. Oh, the photos they took were not as good as mine so I'll post new pics as soon as I take more the next day or so. Not sure why their camera was so fuzzy. Not really seeing much change though. Also the famous nurse Olga, (inside joke for some of us), told me to use a lightening cream on my scar since it's not raised. It only needs to get lighter. She said the darker color is actually blood deep in my skin. Interesting. Anyway I already have "Ambi" fade cream and she said its fine to use. It's about $6 over the counter at the local drug store. Most recently, I had been using bioCorneum which I paid about $100 for 50g size on Amazon last year. Previous surgeon from first tuck charged me $150 for same size so when I ran out, I checked Amazon. Anyway Nurse Olga said the bioC would be good if my scar was raised but not needed since it's not. It contains a steroid so I am happy to stop using. Both nurse Olga & the message therapist told me to message the scar and my surgery areas twice a day with oil. I'm using Emu oil currently & they said that's a good one. I've also used bio oil which is also great. Message for 15 minutes each time. Oops, I was doing about 5 minutes tops. Next follow up at one year mark in December. Happy healing to you and all of my TT all stars.
June 9, 2015
I was updating my profile just now asking did anyone use biocorneum and how did the results turned out and i just read ur pist abt it. So it,s more on amazon thn in dr,s office, i need to order it frm him then. I was also just masassaging only five mins, probably not even tht long, for abt 100 strokes, well 15mins it is. My scar is raised for my 2 tt but not my 1st and it,s darker too. He said tht i might as well return the mederma cream bc it wont work, now i see why he said tht bc my scar needs to be flattened out and lightened up. Thanks for info, thts why i love this site, there,s a lot of info tht u dont hsve to ask abt bc it,s already put on there bc someone has already gone through it and sometimes some ps,s dont explain everything. Take care, Happy Healing!

June 10, 2015
You are so welcome honey. In your update you say the BioC is $70 at your doc office. That's most likely the small size. It comes in small or large. Get the large 50oz. Check Amazon or BioC web site first. Doctors mark it up. I'm on here to help because this site and all of you helped me so much when I was in a panic over my first tuck. I don't know what I would have done had I not found RS. Glad I did not have to find out. LOL Take care doll. You are doing just great.

Glad I could help. That's 50g not oz. Wishing you continued great healing. The swelling will pass. The way I see it, it can't possibly last as long as my discomfort with my old ugly flabby belly.
