I was never happy about my nose, which was...

I was never happy about my nose, which was exacerbated by that that I suffered a break in it over the bridge with led to a significant septum deviation forming over the years. Added to that I suffered rhinitis and it just never worked properly. Looks wise, just a bit too big and wide for me to be happy with. I ended up with such a bad septum collapse that breathing up one side of my nose was very restricted and so I was going to have to have septum repair and turbinoplasty whatever, so I decided to have the rhinoplasty as well with renowned surgeon Basim Matti at the Cromwell Hospital in London.

Mr Matti was amusing, knowledgeable and kind when I met him for consultation. It was also clear that he knew his area of expertise. He didn't over promise. He was realistic in what he could offer and I was realistic in what I expected.

I had Rhinoplasty, Septoplasty and Turbinoplasty on August 2nd 2013. I was really apprehensive before the prodedure, but I had to have the repairs done so I had to go ahead. I had lot of post operative pain on coming out of anaesthesia for a few hours and bleeding, but after a morphine shot that was really the last pain bad I had. After that it was controlled with oral dihydrocodeine. After a week I had no more pain and the bruising had nearly disappeared - although for the first couple of days after the procedure it was horror show - not immediately afterwards funnily enough, though - it just gradually came on the first day, got worse on the second - like I'd been in a terrible fight and just when I was beginning to panic it suddenly started to get better on the third day. The cast came off on day 7, and I could go out - just a touch of foundation covered the remaining slight bruising. I had discomfort but nothing really major. I took arnica before and after the procedure as well as bromelain, on advice from Mr Matti, which I am sure helped with the fast healing. I also taped up my nose at night for six months to help healing, and ensure the shape.

So, the results... Well, I just couldn't believe it... It was amazing. Not only did it work so much better within a couple of weeks, it just looked fabulous, it was exactly the nose I was meant to have. Mr Matti under promised and over delivered in my opinion. A very clever surgeon, because my new nose fits my face exactly, it is just completely in balance and totally me. People commented that I looked well, or younger, only a couple of people who knew me really well could really see the difference and knew what it was. Everyone else just couldn't tell what had made me look better, if they remarked at all. When asked, I simply said I had a break mended, which of course I had, but only one person ever asked and they'd known me for years.

I would post pictures, but really it is pointless because everyone's journey is so very individual. I know I wanted to see pictures myself, but when I did, they didn't help in me understanding what was going to happen for me. Also I wouldn't really want to be recognised should someone I didn't want to know about my procedure visit this website!

All I can advise anyone who is considering this procedure is this:

Make sure you choose the very best surgeon in the field... even if it means finding more money than you wanted to spend in the beginning it is worth the expense to get the very best. Cheap surgeons will do a cheap job. And surely even if you have to save longer or do an extra job, if you are hard up for funds, it will be worth it in the long run. You owe it to yourself to have the best possible person for the best possible job.

Take time over your decision and do not rush into anything, although I had to have part of my procedure for medical reasons (the collapsed septum, and overgrown turbinates) I still took a few months to consult a couple of surgeons, to deliberate on the implications of the procedure, and to prepare myself physically and mentally for it.

Do not drink any alcohol for at least 2 weeks before the operation - I'm sure this also helped with rapid recovery.

And have a realistic expectation - understand your face and what is the right nose for it, not a ridiculous notion of the 'perfect' nose which will never be right for you - remember poor Michael Jackson and his poor nose!!! (No disrespect to him as a singer intended.)

Finally I am so glad I chose to go with Mr Basim Matti. I think he is unbelievably gifted, very courteous, very cautious, very experienced and I'm delighted with my result.
