Sliding Genioplasty Was Well Worth It and Changed my Life

I am now now almost 2 weeks post op from my chin surgery (genioplasty). I was never nervous going into it, but it was well worth it. I have had a very bad overbite my whole life that braces did not fix, so my chin had always had a receding appearance and was very small and not very noticeable; basically, I walked around saying, "I have no chin." I never even noticed it was an issue until I started college, but even up until then, I realized there was something not right in pictures, especially from my side profile, but I couldn't figure out what it was. My face looked very round when smiling and I hated the way i looked, so I very rarely allowed pics. It was very frustrating to not be able to figure out why I looked so bad in pics. I finally talked to my family about it and they had mentioned to me that I barely had a chin due to my over bite and that was one of the reasons I had braces. It all made sense to me and after looking in the mirror, especially from the side, I finally realized why I hated the way I looked in pictures and why my face was so round: I had no chin! I was not happy with what I saw. My orthodontist recommended a fantastic surgeon only 15 min away from me and I quickly made a consultation with him. It all went well, and he knew he exactly what type of procedure to perform to fix my issue, but school/work/internships got in the way and I wasn't able to schedule the surgery. Fast forward to 2 weeks ago, a year and a half out of college, and I finally had the time to have the surgery. My chin bone was moved out 9 millimeters! It looks fantastic and there is a huge difference , especially from the side. I am finally happy with my side profile. I do not suggest getting a chin implant - my surgeon, who is a plastic & reconstructive surgeon, an oral & maxillofacial surgeon, and a craniofacial surgeon, decided against it. He said that what I had done, a sliding genioplasty, was much better, looks much more natural, and could cause less potential problems in the future, and he was 100% right. In very simple terms, a sliding genioplasty is cutting the chin bone and sliding it forward, then using screws or wires to hold it in place. (I have wires). The incision is on the inside of the mouths, so there will be no visible scars. The pain was only bad the first 2-3 days, but afterwards, its just swelling and simple soreness, which is what my doctor said would happen. He told me that it is not major surgery, even though it sounds like it is, and that most people do not complain of pain and that there is usually just soreness kind of like when wisdom teeth are removed. You will be on a soft diet for the first 2 weeks or so, and no strenuous physical activity for 5 weeks. I almost 2 weeks post op and I am feeling great now. Most of the swelling and bruising has subsided (which there will most likely be some in the beginning) and there is no more pain at all; just a little tightness around the incision due to the stitches, which was to be expected. Overall, I am 100% pleased with my decision and ecstatic with the results! If you have a similar situation like mine, and feel you have a tiny chin that doesn't show much or give you a strong side profile/jaw line, then I would def consider a sliding genioplasty. The results will be fantastic and 100% natural!
