Warning: Facial Paralysis is a Side Effect of Chin Lipo
I am 4 days post tumescent liposuction and ulherapy on my chin and neck, and I have (hopefully temporary) damage to the left side of my mouth. It is very apparent when I eat, talk, or smile. Not that I’m smiling much now.
I’m absolutely devastated and I’ve spent the last 4 days crying. My PS never mentioned that this is a well-established side effect (~5% of chin lipo) and there is nothing in my information packet or post-care instructions. I don’t even care how the surgery actually turned out, since I now look like I had a stroke.
If you’re considering lipo on your chin or neck, please ASK your surgeon how many of their patients develop paralysis and what they would do to mitigate the situation. There’s no cure except the nerve healing itself and my dr’s office never called to check on me or schedule a follow up, so I’m just hiding at home and dreading work tomorrow.

Your condition is called marginal mandibular neuropraxia. The motor nerve that provides muscle function to your lower lip isn't working on the left side. This is a common and known side effect of submental liposuction. I performed 40 submental liposuctions last year and have been a plastic surgeon for 25 years. All marginal mandibular neurapraxias that I have ever seen (related to submental liposuction) have resolved. I have never seen a permanent injury, though they can persist for days, weeks, or even a couple of months. If you do not improve in the next couple weeks, you may benefit from a Medrol dose pack (oral steroid).

Don't worry!!! The exact same thing happened after my chin lipo procedure too! It went away after about 2 weeks and was fully gone after a month. You look amazing!!!! For me it was the best decision I ever made. Just give it time. ♡♡♡
Thank you, kind internet stranger—that makes me feel better!
The same thing happen to me and I'm so stressed about it!Did you do anything like ice and massage the area? Or did it just go away on its own?
I have this complication (and still do 2 years post-op) due to a sliding geniopalsty I had performed. Im so sorry. Do you feel discomfort or tightness or pulling when you speak?
Have you had any improvement?! I’m so sorry this happened to you. I’m a month out and my once beautiful smile is totally gone and my lip is half the size it used to be :(
Are you noticing any improvement in this symptom yet?
