A Great Experience

A genetic double chin runs in my family. Even when I was 120 pounds and exercising heavily 4x a week, I still had a double chin. Since then, my weight has fluctuated around 130-150 lbs, but my double chin always made me look (in my opinion) ten pounds heavier. I definitely don’t consider myself someone interested in getting a bunch of plastic surgery done, but my chin was always my biggest insecurity. It was most noticeable in profile, but there was also a bit that hung down and was visible from the front, which really impacted my self-esteem. I considered Coolsculpting and Kybella at first, but upon doing my research I didn’t think it was a wise investment. As I understand it, the results of these procedures can vary, and can sometimes be barely noticeable, even after multiple rounds of procedures. It is approx. $1000 per coolsculpting/kybella treatment in Toronto, and though it is minimally invasive compared to liposuction, I wasn’t interested in paying up to $5000 for results that could be barely even noticeable. So I did some research on chin liposuction surgeons in Toronto and Dr Tong’s name came up again and again. I scheduled a virtual consultation with him (during COVID), which was $150, which can transfer over to your surgery fees if you decide to go ahead with the procedure. Dr Tong is a very kind and professional personality, and has extensive experience in chin liposuction, which seems to be a very popular procedure at their clinic. I asked him about three procedures: chin liposuction, mini neck lift and buccal fat removal. He expressed confidence that I could get the results I was looking for with just the liposuction, without the neck lift, which is typically for older patients. As for the buccal fat removal, he said that, in his opinion, the fullness in my cheeks was not noticeable to him, but that he understood if this was something I wanted to get done, which I thought was a very professional and empathetic response. He gave me four different quotes for mixes of all three procedures, but I ultimately decided to only go through with just the chin liposuction, which was quoted at just under $4000 CAD. The buccal fat removal would have added another $4500. After booking my surgery, I went in for another (free) in-person consultation so that Dr Tong could get a better look at the area. The day of the surgery went well, and the nurses were friendly and professional. They also were very understanding of my anxiety around IVs and went out of their way to accommodate this. I did local anaesthesia and sedation, meaning I wasn’t fully asleep during the surgery, but I was very relaxed and drowsy. I could feel the cannula Dr Tong was using but no pain, and because of the sedation the sensation didn’t bother me much or freak me out. After the surgery I had a little nap in the waiting area before I was checked out. I personally took the prescribed pain killers for the first two days after the surgery, then after I was fine without them. Honestly the most uncomfortable thing was having to sleep semi-upright for the first week. Make sure to find a position that works for you before the surgery. The results were immediate for me, and I was absolutely thrilled with them. I had a jawline for the first time in my life. In the weeks following, my profile fluctuated because of swelling, but two months after surgery I am very very pleased with my results, and so is Dr Tong. I still have some occasional pangs of pain and some numbness and tingling in the surgery area, but this is apparently common in all types of lipo surgery, and will heal in time. My scarring is very minimal, almost invisible. Like I said, I now have a defined jawline (not, like, supermodel level, but a definite improvement!), and there is no double chin noticeable at all from the front profile either. I think the change is the perfect balance between subtle and noticeable. Subtle in the way that I still look like myself but noticeable in the way that I look 10 pounds lighter and have a much more refined side profile. Sometimes I even forget that I had the procedure done, and I mean this in the best way possible. I feel much more confident around others and in front of the camera, like I never even had the insecurity in the first place. Dr Tong and his team, from the reception staff to the nurses, were amazing every step of the way and I want to thank them all for their work. Everyone was so kind, professional and organized. Dr Tong was very down-to-earth and friendly, and I appreciated the way he spoke about my pre-surgery insecurities with empathy and sensitivity, and that he didn’t try to push additional surgeries or procedures. If I had any complaints about the whole process its that the post-procedure instructions were a bit unclear, and given scattered in emails or during appointments. It would have been nice to be given a booklet with a more thorough timeline of pre and post-surgery instructions (1 week before, 24 hours before, 24 hours after, 1 week after, 3 weeks after, etc). I ended up writing one for myself just to consolidate the information, so…if you’re interested, Dr Tong, hit me up lol. All in all it has been a great experience, and I would recommend Dr Tong and his clinic to anyone looking for this procedure in Toronto/Ontario. Hopefully I will add some before and after pictures once the clinic sends them to me.
