I have had both AHA and TCA peels done and the latter is much better.
I got AHA done last summer and did not see very good results. My skin peeled off, but in patches and the result was not what i had hoped for. I wanted a quick fix for some scars and blemishes so i opted for a AHA because it takes less time and needs no recovery time.
The procedure was the same, cleaning, applying the solution and eventually the skin peeling off. I was also told that i can mix a very little potion of alphahydroxy acid with some face wash and apply weekly but i opted against it because i was scared of doing this myself incase i apply too much of it or something.
So anyways, the AHA peel was ok and i just had a feeling that maybe my skin needs a bit more than a mere AHA. After a few months, i decided to go for a TCA and now i am very happy with the way my skin looks and feels. TCA is much stronger and it works better i think. At least for severly damaged skin. It smoothed out my skin, reduced age spots and even wrinkles. The skin peeled evenly and my face looks great.
My personal opinion is that if you are going to spend money on a peel, may as well spend on a peel that is more effective and permanent. 2 or 3 peels can really change your look completely, as opposed to AHA. It is really no point spending money on AHA first and then spending again on a TCA or a Phenol.
Of course phenol is the strongest i believe, but my skin was not all that damaged. I did not need a phenol. The day i need one, i will definetly go for it. So far, i feel TCA is better than AHA, it has been better for me atleast.
