Extremely Disappointed Experience
I came into see Dr. Carson last year for my jaw surgery. From the initial consult, he did not have great bedside manner. His first quote I received included not only the upper and lower jaw surgery I wanted, but also additional procedures, lip lift and cheek implants. I felt these extra procedures were unnecessary and seemed like an upsell. After thinking it over, I decided against the lip lift due to scarring concerns and felt I didn’t need cheek implants. However, when I returned for a follow up consultation, Dr. Huynh insisted I needed the cheek implants saying my face was “flat” and recommended large implants. He was confident in his recommendation and said, “I’m the surgeon, I know best.” I trusted him, which turned out to be a huge mistake. After the surgery, I experienced problems almost immediately. 1 week after surgery, I mentioned pain on the right side of my cheek, which I understood could be part of the healing process, but it didn’t improve. By the 2 week follow-up, the pain was still there along with abnormal swelling. Dr. Huynh prescribed pain medication but seemed dismissive, telling me to simply wait. The pain persisted. 2 months and 20 days after the surgery, I was still in severe pain, with persistent swelling, and my cheeks looked unnaturally large (looked like a chipmunk) and the implants clearly didn’t suit my face. So he said he’ll go back in to see what’s going on but I asked to have the implants removed due to the pain/discomfort. I was shocked when he quoted me an additional $1,000 for anesthesia to remove the implants, on top of the original $6,000 for the implants. This was incredibly frustrating, especially considering I was still in pain and dealing with migraines, swelling, and even pain in my teeth. As soon as I got my implants removed, I was no longer in pain. I came into for my 1 wk follow up and expected expected empathy, an apology, or at least an acknowledgment of the pain I had been enduring. Instead, Dr. Huynh yelled at me, blaming me for the situation and saying I didn’t waited long enough to heal. He also reminded me, “this is plastic surgery,” showing no responsibility for the complications I was experiencing. His lack of accountability and his egotistical, narcissistic behavior were incredibly disappointing. It became clear that his primary concern was making money off me rather than addressing my concerns. As if that wasn’t enough, he had his wife, Harriet, who is also the office manager, come into the room to talk to me. It’s embarrassing that she allows her husband’s unprofessional behavior to continue in the office. I also observed that he has been unprofessional with his staff, shouting and making disrespectful remarks in front of patients. To make matters worse, Harriet offered me a discount for any future surgeries, which felt pointless and insulting after everything I had gone through. Despite the negative experience with Dr. Huynh, I do want to mention that I am satisfied with my upper and lower jaw surgery results. I was initially hesitant to do surgery because of Dr. Huynh's attitude/poor bedside manner, but his nurse Christina encouraged me saying he was a great oral maxillofacial surgeon. From the very beginning to the very end of the surgery, she has always been kind, caring, and positive. She even took care of us for overnight care and made the whole experience great. She made us feel safe and comfortable and also fun. My husband and I now see Christina for Botox, and the results are amazing! While I am happy with the outcome of my jaw surgery, the overall experience with Dr. Huynh was deeply frustrating and disappointing. His focus seemed to be more on upselling unnecessary procedures and making money rather than on providing quality care. His narcissistic and rude behavior, lack of accountability, and dismissive attitude toward my concerns make it difficult for me to recommend him for any cosmetic procedures. I strongly advise you to carefully consider his recommendations and be cautious about any procedures that don’t feel right for you.
