Cheek Implant Procedures Had Problems from the Beginning, Left Permanent Disfiguration
Myself and my wife had surgeries with Dr Zoran, both had EXTREMELY bad results, one causing permanent damage. This review will go in detail about the nightmare that I went through so it can help other future patients evaluate the services rendered, options provided by Dr Zoran and final results so you can make an educated decision whether to use him or not. This will only detail my procedure, you can search for my wife's procedures they should appear in the same date of this review.
Lately after doing more research regarding Dr Zoran I found that in Google other patients have stated similar complaints in the past few months and surprisingly similar "options" provided to them to remediate the problems. "I will fix it at no charge to you" should not be really an used over and over again for several patients. Surgical procedures have risks, I fully understand that, but when a surgeon seems to keep on using this line should give you an idea that if you use this practitioner you might end up coming back to get things "fixed" instead of getting the results you want from the beginning. Also take in consideration the emotional distress you will go through for carrying the bad result until he can "fix it"
Work Performed: Cheek implants and fat grafting
1. After the surgery, the Left cheek implant had a lot of liquid accumulation between the top implant location and right below the eye area. This was noticed at the time of the removal of the original tape. I was told it was normal and should be absorbed by the body.
2. Approximately 2 weeks after the procedure the same implant started having sharp pain at the lower part and as swelling went down it showed an extrusion of the implant on the upper part of the face, next to the eye socket. It also showed a large deep indentation on the cheek*. It was determined that the implant had shifted and a corrective procedure was performed and I PAID for the Anesthesia fee ($750). Correction had a cost.
* When I questioned about the indentation on the Cheek, nurse Kim Manion stated that she did not know what can be causing it to ask the Dr, Dr. Zoran stated that it is normal and can be due to the implant and swelling, and that fat grafitng can be done on that area if after 1 year of the surgery if it is still prominent. This is very important to note as it will be referenced below.
3. After the corrective surgery the pain came back weeks later, at that point a steroid injection was provided. The steroid injection helped with the pain temporarily but it created fat atrophy on the area. The reason of the atrophy can be debatable to whether it was administered correctly or not, but as per Dr. Zoran if the indentation did not go away he will do fat grafting on the area. (another fix)
4. After the corrective surgery, movement of my upper lip on the side did not have the same motor capacity as the other side. Dr. Zoran stated that I just had 2 recent surgeries and nerve re-connection takes a while and it will come back to normal, to give it time.
5. Liquid accumulation on the side that was giving me problems never went away. When touched slightly I could hear the liquid moving inside of my face. The liquid was believed by Dr. Zoran to be created by some type of infection. Several types of antibiotics were administered during this time which temporarily relieved the problem.
6. In the last episode of extreme pain, swelling returned to the area as well. Antibiotics stopped working, I was due to leave the country because we were being deployed and I looked for professional help as soon as I could which I was told that the implant should be removed AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. I got the implant removed 5 months after the initial surgery.
7. As soon as the implant was removed the pain subsided. I had question Dr. Zoran several times if the pain had to do anything with the implant touching a nerve, which was always discarded because he said the location of the implant was underneath the muscle, but the surgeon that removed the implant stated that the location of the implant must have been pressing on the nerves either due to the inflammation or shift of the implant. It was not caused by infection.
He determined that if pain was caused when the area started swelling and movement during animation or muscle function, or finger pressure on the face produced shooting / sharp pain, IT WAS indicative of the implant pushing on the nerve and he questioned WHY this was not determined earlier with a CT scan or similar test when the problem was not going away. Dr. Zoran never recommended any type of test to determine cause of the problem, only provided the options of waiting or removing the implant as last resource. These were very stressing, painful and emotional months for me.
8. After the implant removal the *indentation on the cheek did not disappear. The surgeon told me that after the removal he though the indentation it would dissipate as he thought it was caused by the inflammation but he had no answer of why it was there. He thought that maybe the infection I had for several months might have damaged the tissue but I knew this was not the reason as I had that indentation from the beginning, this was not a new thing, it was obvious as soon as 2 weeks after the surgery. See pictures attached to this review.
9. After several days of the removal surgery and inflammation subsiding, the indentation became more noticeable. The movement of the lip was the same as before the surgery so I decided to check with a Neurologist. Sadly to complete this chapter of my experience with the work performed by Dr. Zoran, the Neurologist determined that there is some type of nerve damage on my face and asked when did the first surgery took place to determine what type of treatment could be possible. Due to the length of time that it had transpired from when I first noticed the symptoms until then, he did not believe there was anything to do about it. He prescribed B12 and other vitamins injections daily for 2 weeks as he has seen sometimes nerve improvement but he stated that most problems SHOULD be corrected within 2 months of the injury and it might be too late to do anything now.
As shown in the attached video I now have a permanent nerve injury that I have to deal with for the rest of my life.
10. The cost of the implants removal, consultations, treatments and other costed me over $10K. In additional I need to have another plastic surgeon fix the neck lift procedure he did on my wife which it will amount to another thousands of dollars.
In addition to all the mishaps and problems with our procedures, the day of the surgery Dr. Zoran was 5 hours late for my surgery. He visited the room where I was waiting twice before my surgery. Dr. Zoran look a bit agitated, worried. He was apologetic because of the delay. He blamed part of the delay on the Anesthesiologist being 1 hour late. Because I saw him that he was a bit agitated when he saw me I asked him if everything was going well with my wife, he said that it was. I told him to take his time that I don’t mind waiting. I am not sure what transpired that day but for sure I know about the results that my wife and myself have to deal with.
I understand that we signed consents for our surgeries, which completely detail any and all complications that can arise from a surgery. I know this is standard to provide full protection to the surgeon while minimizing liability. But one thing is to be protected from compilations arising from a NORMAL PROCEDURE - which we completely agree with – to poorly performed procedures that yield extremely poor and bad results.
If you are a new patient looking to have a procedure done with this surgeon, I want you to closely look at the pictures and video and ask yourself if they represent the work of an experienced surgeon. I want you to honestly say if you would have paid $19,150 for this work (total paid for both of our surgeries). The Dr will tell you that he is willing to correct the work at no-charge and touch-ups are not uncommon, but we are not talking about a small touch-ups that can arise from a normal procedure, we are talking about corrections on each and one of the procedures, and not “small touch-ups” either. If my review can help anyone, so be it, it's a true and honest review of my experience.
