I was born without double eyelids. Growing up, I often felt that I was stuck in the wrong body. I could not fully express who I was or what I felt inside because I didn’t LOOK the way I felt. I found it difficult to hold eye contact or when I would take pictures, I would need to take a dozen more so that I could get an angle that wouldn’t make my eyes look so slit-like. I could not start my day without any eye make-up and I was constantly afraid to venture out of my comfort zone. It was debilitating. When I finished high school, I thought that enough was enough and I finally made the decision to undergo the double eyelid surgery.
After having a consultation with Dr. Kim, I had not been more certain of anything in my life. I had spent the last 18 years living in a body that didn’t reflect who I was on the inside. I didn’t want to wake up to another day of being too shy to do something as simple as maintain eye contact. Dr. Kim was extremely empathetic to how I felt. He took me through the whole process and told me what I could realistically expect from this surgery. A week post-operation, the stitches came out and my eyes felt a lot more comfortable. I was so excited by the evident transformation happening right before my eyes.
I can say that it was one of the best decisions I have ever made for myself. I didn’t make the decision for other people’s approval or because I wanted to look like others but because I wanted to be the best version of myself. I finally look the way I have always felt inside and I owe it to Dr. Kim. I don’t have the words to describe what a difference he has made to my life. It’s as if I have always had the potential to be more and do more with my life and he has given me the key to fulfil it.
