I’ve been a reader of RealSelf for a long time just to keep up on what people are doing as far as plastic surgery so I thought I knew everything that was out there. Well I didn’t know there were doctors doing lipo with fat grafting to the breasts until this past summer when I read all the reviews of Dr. Bednar in Charlotte, NC. Truth be told, I wasn’t really interested in the fat grafting part, I was only looking into the liposuction but after some of the photos I saw of the work he did, I thought, why waste the fat? Why not use it to enhance my breasts since they’ve lost some volume in the upper part... I figured if I wasn’t convinced about the fat grafting after talking to him, I would just get the liposuction done.
He said I could probably look forward to an increase in breast size of a cup to a cup and a half depending on how much I retain. I told him that I didn’t care how much bigger they got because my first concern is the fat around my waist. In the last few years I have gained a belly for no reason as my diet is the same as always and pretty clean, and I could not for the life of me lose the weight with any amount of diet or exercise. The rest of me is not really fat as I am only 122, but all the fat seems to be stuck at the belly. He understood that I really wanted that fat gone and he did it! I hear about lots of doctors that don’t do exactly what you want them to, but he did and I’m very grateful.
So the results: I started at 122 with breast size 34C, and ended up at 117 with 32DD. This is after about 3 months so this is what I am retaining, I think. He took fat out of the belly area, the flanks, and the outer hips. There were 505 cc’s put into each breast which is huge! My stomach is flat, but I’m still a bit swollen around my waist so I think (and hope) it will go down even further. The best part of the whole thing is, it’s your own fat, put where you want it! So no implants, no dangerous leaks, no ridiculous looking boobs… just a very natural slope. People think I have implants and I’m like: “nope, not me!”

He has a great staff supporting him too. Sylvia was really helpful and offered to pick me up the morning of the surgery since I was from out of town, but actually my nurse Kendall picked me up and she was so great to talk to. I was really scared of the pain post surgery but she told me everyone says it’s just like a leg heavy workout where you are sore, but not really in pain. She was exactly right. It wasn’t very painful at all afterwards, although it looks really painful with all the bruising. I took pain meds for 3 days and that was it. All in all it was probably the easiest surgery I have ever had! Dr. Bednar and his staff have thought of everything, even the supplements to take before and after surgery which I think really helped me recover fast.
The anesthetist was a really soft spoken gentle guy who put me right at ease in the few minutes before surgery. I think people are always nervous before any kind of surgery but they really did a good job quieting my fears and nervousness.
I’m sorry I didn’t take pictures of my bruising post op, (all I wanted to do was rest in bed, not take pictures) but it was similar to what most people on RealSelf had, or probably a little less. I do have one area above my thigh where the bruising still didn’t really go away, it just changed from a purple bruise to a tan colored bruise and I haven’t gotten a tan or anything so I will have to ask the doctor what that is about. I hope it goes away eventually as I did not have any discoloration on my skin there before.
My husband was worried about my bruising as he has never seen this stuff before and also had some questions about me getting off pain killers, do I wean, or just stop, etc... and Dr. Bednar answered his cell phone on a Sunday afternoon at his home. He made himself available any time and we felt we could call him or his staff anytime we needed. No one ever made us feel we were bothering them on their day off. It was really very nice and comforting!
I would definitely do the lipo again in a second, if I needed to, and now that I trust Dr. Bednar I am thinking of doing a mini face lift with him too. I just have to find a time in my schedule for down time. I had him do some botox and filler recently and I love it. I like that he doesn’t like an unnatural look so you can trust him with your face. Obviously I am going to be a little more hesitant with my face than my body, and every time I see him I ask more questions to make sure we are on the same page, but when I am ready I will go to him.
If you are on the fence about the lipo/fat grafting to breasts, I would say get a consult with Dr. Bednar and go for it. You need to go to someone who gets consistently good results and has been doing it for decades. This is definitely not something to cut corners and go for the cheaper guys!
