I went back to Carmel, Indiana for my second...

I went back to Carmel, Indiana for my second treatment at the end of April. Although my first treatment 7 months ago produced some fabulous initial results(90% reduction in sweat), it did wear off a bit(75% reduction in sweat) – thus the second treatment. The process and recovery is the same as before. However, this time they gave me a few samples of a skin recovery moisturizing cream. As you heal, your skin can sometimes feel painfully “dry” or “tight” and the cream provides great relief. This also goes away after about 3 weeks.

I have suffered from excessive underarm sweat...

I have suffered from excessive underarm sweat (Hyperhidrosis) since high school. As far as treatments go, I have tried every deodorant on the market with no success. I have also tried Drysol - which didn’t work either.

Recently I heard about the MiraDry procedure. It appealed to me because it is a non-invasive procedure that is supposed to offer permanent results. Some of the other treatments available like Botox are temporary and other solutions require surgery.

I live in Ohio and there are no doctors in this state that currently perform the procedure. So, I drove 3 hours to have my first treatment in Carmel, Indiana last month (September 2012). My procedure was administered by performed by a licensed Electrologist/Trained Laser Technician not a doctor or nurse and the cost was $3k. The procedure took about 1 ½ hours and it went like this:

1. I spoke with the technician performing my procedure the prior week. She explained the steps of the procedure and what to expect as far as recovery. I was also told to shave the day prior to the procedure and not to wear deodorant the day of. Because I had a long drive, she suggested that I bring a cooler with extra ice packs to switch out on the way home.

2. A grid was placed on my armpit and alcohol soaked gauzes placed over it, transferring a template to your underarm. The template shows the technician where to inject the lidocaine and where to place the machine for treatment.

3. The technician injected lidocaine in the designated grid spots (about 30). This was somewhat uncomfortable but, didn’t hurt as much as I expected. She waited until I was completely numb before moving to the next step.

4. The technician then applied a gel to my armpit and then placed the machine on the designated grid spots. Each zap feels like a vacuum, sucking your skin until there is a secure grip and then nothing until the machine beeps to move on to the next spot on the grid. The gel helps with the suction. A few of the spots got EXTREMELY and UNCOMFORTABLY HOT, but it only lasted for about 5 seconds. I guess those spots were missed by the lidocaine injections. There are about 30 spots under each arm and the zapping takes about 15 seconds for each spot.

5. After she completed each underarm, it was immediately covered with an icepack. Before I left the office she removed the template by wiping it with alcohol soaked gauze. On the ride home and for a week afterwards, I kept applying icepacks. When I left the office there was minimal swelling and some bruising. However, later that day the swelling had become quite substantial and the bruising quite sore. Over the next two weeks the swelling and bruising slowly diminished. I was back to normal 2 ½ weeks after the procedure.

My sweating has been DRASTICALLY reduced(about 90%). A side benefit of the procedure is reduced underarm hair growth. I haven’t shaved in two weeks. Overall, I am very happy with the procedure and results. However, I think most of the marketing you see about MiraDry definitely DOWNPLAY the swelling, bruising and recovery time. I would suggest taking the day off following the procedure due to the discomfort. In addition, it would be a good idea to take an anti-inflammatory a few hours before having the procedure to get ahead of the soreness and swelling. My second procedure will be scheduled the beginning of next year (2013).
