It's been a long debate whether I should do BFR. Chin lipo - for sure I wanted to do it to fix my double chin. (I have normal BMI and the double chin was really a recent development maybe cuz of bad posture and/or aging). BFR - it has mixed reviews. Mainly bc some people claim it'll age you prematurely. That's also one of my greatest worries since I’m already born with a mature-Ish face. I just want my face shape to look smooth & I'm not going for the hallow/ prominent cheekbone look.
Well, I finally decided to do it after just 2 weeks of researching doctors. After I saw the reviews, I've decided to go with Dr. Lazos. The online consultation was via email and super smooth. I was confirmed to be a good candidate for both procedures, and they were able to squeeze me in just 4 days after the consultation which was amazing and also unexpected.
We drove from LA to San Diego, stayed at a gorgeous motel for one night and continued driving to the trolley station to go to the border. We then walked across the border around noon. The wait to Tijuana wasn't bad at all. Practically no line, and nobody looked at our passports. (Kinda strange haha)
Then we were like 4 hrs early, so we just exploded around town and ate some really good tacos. (It’s recommended that you have a full stomach before the procedure)
Finally, it was my appointment time at 4:30pm and I started with hydrafacial which was a packaged deal if you get both chin lipo and buccal fat removal. Really nice touch and quite relaxing. Afterwards, I waited in the lobby for a bit and started the “entree”.
I first met with Dr. Lazos. Super friendly. Super easy to communicate with. Really eased my nerves. I explained to him how I was worried about the potential hallowing effect of BFR and asked if he could do partial removal. He said it’s difficult to do partial and he also does not recommend it. He doesn’t want me to have to come back for a second round. (I thought to myself: one time is scary enough I definitely don’t want to do it again) He then reassured me that bc I’m Asian, most Asians don’t have the hallowing effect. At least he hasn’t seen it after doing it for 800+ times. So I said I trust his judgment and we’ll remove the whole thing.
Then we went into the operating room. It was a little loud for some reason - I could hear loud traffic from outside. I could be facing a large window that was covered by a white curtain? Anyway, I was asked to rinse my mouth with a numbing mouthwash and then I went to take a seat at a dentist chair thingy.
Dr. Lazos then proceeded to numb my face and chin, which was quite painful tbh. My pain tolerance isn’t high so I can definitely feel the pain during the anesthesia process. I had to squeeze the fake boob many times to ease my nerves. (Yea I requested the boob after reading some reviews on here haha. 10/10 would recommend).
PS. During both procedures Dr. Lazos tells you what to do each step of the way so don’t worry.
Then we started with the buccal fat removal. Lots of tugging and pulling. The worst part is when your fat touches the side of your tongue as it’s getting removed. Yes, you can taste it. Yes, it’s hella gross. I was a little nauseous initially when I first tasted my own fat. (It was quite salty and soft)???? then, when he did the other side, I just did some deep breathing and started singing in my head. It helped a lot. The entire buccal fat process probably took less than 5 min. (I thought about taking a photo during the process but I was really scared out of my mind and literally shaking so I couldn’t lol. I saw someone do it in a review and honestly, props to you!)
Then it’s the chin lipo. Honestly this is a little better than buccal fat imo. At least I didn’t have to taste anything and be grossed out by my own fat haha. Again, lots of tugging and pulling, lots of forceful pushing and it felt like it lasted longer than the buccal fat. The needle enters from your chin area and for some reason I could still feel sharp pain around the chin where the needle entered. The rest of my chin was totally numb though. So it’s a little strange knowing that something is happening under your chin but you’re not feeling it at all. And after perhaps around 10 min, the chin is done too. Dr. Lazos then said it’s all done perfectly and I’m good to go!
Then it’s the aftercare instructions back at his office. Tbh I was pretty dazed at this point so I’m so glad that the instructions are printed so I didn’t have to remember anything. He then told me to get meds from the first floor, which is consistent with what I’ve been reading on RS. I then went out to the front desk, paid, and took the elevator downstairs to the pharmacy.
This is the most disappointing part. When I arrived at the first floor, I was told by the front desk there that the pharmacy has closed already, which means I’ll have to get my meds somewhere else. I checked the time and it was around 6:10pm. Normally I’d be fine with it but I was fresh out of the operation + swollen AF + language barrier + still hella anxious so I freaked out internally a bit. So if you have a slightly later appointment, you might want to get the meds ahead of time if you can. (I wish the office would’ve seen this coming and either provide some initial meds or give other instructions)
Then, we called an uber back to the border, which took like half an hour of just waiting for the uber to get to the medical building. Traffic around 6:30pm was NOT good lol. Then we got the meds from 2 separate pharmacies (bc the first one didn’t have the anti-swelling one).
There’s a slight line at the border but it was moving quite quickly. Honestly I was just self conscious about my swelling and face wrap so I really wanted to get it over with. Took us about 30 min to cross the border back to the US.
