Since birth my left leg was underdeveloped. Luckily I have had no real restrictions athletically, but I have always favoured my right leg as it is much stronger. No amount of exercise or physically therapy helped to build symmetry, which was a struggle to say the least. As time went by the difference between legs became much more noticeable so I began researching different cosmetic surgeries that could fix or help my appearance.
Calf implants or Fat grafting were my only two options and I choose the latter as it felt like a more "natural" procedure. After visiting several different surgeons, Dr. Leonard Grossman was the only who I found with the amount of experience which made me feel comfortable to go ahead with the procedure. He was very confident and said it would take two to three attempts to achieve symmetry. I decided to go ahead.
About 400cc of fat was taken from my flanks and injected to my calf and ankle. I was worried it would not take as my skin was very tight around both my calf and ankle, however, roughly 90% remained! My recovery period was about 2 and a half weeks - a lot of discomfort, swelling and I was limping for the most part. Further swelling lasted for 3 months although I was back to full mobility.
5 months later I felt like the fat took really well and my leg felt great. There was definitely still some asymmetry which was noticeable so I went back to meet Dr. Grossman. He agreed that the fat took well and said he would be able to perform a second fat graft which will definitely help. This time the fat was taken from my abdomen (as he was unable to recover any fat from my initial surgery) and once again the surgery was a huge success. I am two days into my recovery but Im feeling good, a little sore by the abdomen but my leg feels fine (walking gingerly).
