I am a 48 year old woman who has always been unhappy with the angle of my neck under my chin. Although I am overweight now, even at a lower weight, I was unhappy with my "double chin" and weak profile. After 3 rounds of Kybella and losing 25 pounds, I came to the realization that I just wasn't going to be comfortable with my appearance until I did something more drastic. As social media became more popular, I realized just how much this problem area impacted my self-confidence - any time someone posted a photo of me without giving me enough notice to stretch out my neck and insist on an elevated camera angle, I cringed. A good friend of mine had some work done on her face and I was so impressed by her results that I scheduled a consultation with her Dr. I am SO glad I did! A few weeks later, I had my procedure.

The day of...
I got to the office around 9:00 after taking my prep meds (an antibiotic, diazepam and Tylenol 3). The Dr applied a numbing cream to take the edge off the first couple injections. We then moved into the procedure room and I was offered the option to pick what music to play.
The next set of injections were tougher. He did the lipo under my chin first. Then numbed each side of my face before working on it. My left side first, then right (so my left side reigned feeling about an hour ahead of the right).
Being awake was interesting. It definitely takes a calm head and the ability to not let things scare you. I could feel the tugging and pulling, but could also hear the cutting around my ears. I wouldn’t change it, though... I recovered faster than I would have had a general anesthetic been used.
The procedure lasted about 3 hours and I was driven home by a friend who stayed the night. I had a lot of pain that first night but I opted not to take anything stronger than Tylenol 3 because I often vomit from stronger meds and that didn’t seem like a good idea with incisions in my face.

Would you compare the injections (pain level) to about the level of a dentist injecting the inside of the mouth? Curious.

A little more painful because they go deeper, but it is quick. Two injections actually were in the mouth - the needle was inserted just inside my lower lip and went down on each side. The last set of injections were the deepest and most painful... maybe half again as painful as a dentist’s shot but there are more of them.

Wow! Thanks for letting me know. I've had a root canal where they had to inject into the roof of the mouth. So this gives me some good perspective.

I had a root canal a few months ago, but no injections into the roof of my mouth... ouch! That doesn’t sound pleasant!

You are so freaking brave! I had my face lift done in May, and made sure I was totally under! There's no way I could have taken those shots! I woke up a couple of times, felt the tugging, and that was okay. But I don't know how you managed to get through the whole procedure awake! You're a rock star! And you look great!

Thank you for your kind words! There were a few times where the cannula crossed over the border into an area that wasn't numb, and he quickly corrected when that happened. The sound of cutting around my ears was actually the most awkward part.

I think its awesome to get it done with a local. I think it would definately save money on operating room costs

The next day...
I went back to have my bandages changed and left with a compression garment and instructions on how to care for my incisions.
I took a pain pill in the morning but didn’t need any more after that. I snapped a few photos of the incisions as my dressings were changed.
