Sprionolactone Put Me Into Early Menopause

Yes my face cleared right up - but I spent almost 8 years trying to regulate my hormones with creams and supplements. I stopped getting my period for years, which sounds good, but I knew it wasn’t right (I’m 42 now). Doctors didn’t believe me when I said I believed this early menopause may be related to Spiro - well it was. So was the one and off hair loss, night time hot flashes and other issues. I spent countless dollars (Rx’s, supplements, insurance, Integrative docs, reg docs), time (doc appointments, hormone seminars, etc.) all to find out that when I finally stopped taking Spiro about 6-8 months later my period came back and hormone levels are all fine. Energy level and mood are better now too and I didn’t even know those were bad!
Spiro is good for face - but bad in most other ways. It just took me a long time to figure it out.

Wish I could talk to you because I'm going to the same thing and getting no answers!
A dermatologist put me on Spironolactone for hormonal acne when I was 46 and not long after my periods became irregular then stopped. Like you I felt crappy the whole time I was on it too. I went into early menopause @ 47 despite stopping the medication. There is no family history of early menopause and my GP at the time felt that Spironolacone was the reason for it. Sadly no doctors I've spoken to since have been willing to accept that though. Ugh. Very sorry for your troubles with it, glad things have normalized since then.
Same here! Early menopause caused by spironolactone. Fortunately I was finished having babies.
Wow I've only been on it for 6weeks now and I haven't had my period plus and getting hot flashes all over. My feet is even worse. Am only 36 with no kids yet. Thanks for sharing am getting off this right now
This review made me reconsider my experience. At 48, I took spironolactone for two weeks. I also have bipolar disorder, but it's generally well controlled. I think spiro triggered a bipolar episode. I wasn't hungry and since I wanted to lose weight, I decided to take advantage of the situation. Estrogen is stored in body fat and losing 10% of my body weight so quickly may have jolted my system. I stopped having periods. I'm now 50 and was shocked when my period came back! Blood tests now indicate that I'm not in menopause. Spiro is used with other drugs to treat early puberty and is only used for acne in women (not men) due to hormonal effects. I still have acne.
