Very Unhappy with Procedure and Concerns Mostly Dismissed. Bristol, GB

54 years old and whilst generally up together for my age, I had really heavy jowls - a hereditary feature - which was making me very self conscious. I saw Mr Guest who recommended a full facelift and because the procedure was under local anasthaetic rather than full, decided to go with him. Really regret it now.

Firstly there was some damage to the nerves on one side of my face meaning even a year later my smile is still lopsided - it was significantly and noticeably so for months. But at least that's getting better. I have a big lump under my neck, but worst of all I have a really unnatural jaw line and still have some jowls and drooping at the corner of my mouth

I've mentioned this at least three times to Mr Guest and he just dismisses it with 'your jawbone was always there'. Yes it was, but it didn't stick out before.

At my one year consulltation, despite trying to raise concerns again, discussion was avoided. He just keeps showing me before photos. Yes I have less jowelling but have swapped it for other unattractive features. He acknowledged the lump under my neck shouldn't be there and offered to do another full facelift free of charge.

My total appointment was just over 8 minutes. I really regret using him and I am now going to find another surgeon to give me an independent review and see if I can get a refund. Nearly £8000 which has taken me many years to save up for.

Just one other thing: Mr Guest seems to have considerable shakiness in his hands. I noticed it a year ago (and he made a slip during my op and accidentally cut just above my earlobe although it was never mentioned). At the follow up appointment he tried to say the shakiness was related to something else, but I wouldn't trust him to operate with that level of unsteadiness.

So sorry to hear about another botched result from Mr Guest, and the dismissive way you were treated post-op. My final (in fact, my only) review with him was also under 10 minutes (and I had major concerns to discuss with him) - it's quite extraordinary (not in a good way) how quick he is at everything, including surgery.
I reckon he spent less than 3 hours in total with me - that's initial consultation, surgery, and 2 post-op appointments of under 10 minutes each. Not a bad hourly rate considering the cost was almost £10K.
I've been contacted privately by several of his unhappy patients, and two of them have mentioned his shaky hands. Pretty worrying when your face is being cut open with a scalpel. Maybe that why he used a lot of staples to close my incisions, as if he couldn't manage the suturing.
Did he give any explanation about the lump under your neck, and how he would attempt to fix it, and the other problems (or at least the ones he acknowledged)?
Please insist on a refund, and don't let him near you again. If you are able, try for an appointment with Dominic Bray in Harley Street (no consultation charge but a long waiting list) - I think he's quite familiar with Mr Guest's work (as in revising it).
I hope you get your refund, and can begin the road to recovery with a more caring and competent surgeon, Peta x

Thanks for replying to me Peta. No Mr Guest wasn't able to explain why I had a lump. You'll know yourself he is very evasive when you try to ask questions and just changes the subject. As you know yourself, it's no small interruption to your life to have this done, so I'm really disappointed to have to revisit this. If I was 15 years older I'd probably just put up with it but I feel it's worth another go at getting it right, so thanks, I'll give Dominic Bray a call.

I do feel that there should be a way of reporting this to stop other people having to go through it.

No problem Tania - I know what a lonely, hopeless and distressing experience bad surgery is (especially on your face!), so it's helpful in a way to know that we are not alone.
With regard to reporting, at least if we post reviews and comments about poor performance, results and aftercare on this website, it'll probably save a few others from making the mistake that we made in choosing Philip Guest. Complaining to the old-boy network of "top" surgeons is another ordeal in itself.
Best of luck with everything, and keep us posted x

General Medical Council will investigate!

A good starting point in finding a uk surgeon is to look to see if there a member of BAAPS you can look on the website.Generally they are top surgeons even this isnt foolproof so you need to do your research. BAAPS surgeons are regularly audited and are highly trained, BAPRAS surgeons are lower down the ladder so get confused with this and BAAPS .

Very good comment

A surgeon with shaky hands is not a good omen for performing face and necklifts, no matter if he is BAAPS registered! Revision of such dreadful surgery will be very difficult for another surgeon to improve upon, but I really wish you good luck! Be very careful who you choose for a second operation, and make sure you wait 12 months for everything to heal beforehand.

I read this too and saw comment about him having a shake in his hands - how horrifying for patients putting their trust in him, that is so serious if he is still operating! I watched one of his videos out of pure morbid curiosity (sorry!) and he looks uncomfortable and has to hold one of his hands - the man interviewing him keeps looking down at his hands too as if he knows there is an issue - at one point he has to ask to be reminded of the correct word 'fellowship' and his speech seems a bit off - his mouth movements?! That might sound a bit ott from me but someone in my family but i cant help thinking maybe he has early parkinsons or a tremor. I read a blog about one surgeon who retired age 54 when he got a tremor out of duty to his patients. Pretty much every patient looks on realself these days so I would imagine he is finished now - grateful to the ladies who have warned the rest of us and hope you all manage to get things resolved

Oh he also says how he has 'negotiated a very good deal with the hospital' but im surprised they let him operate at all based on the reviews I've read - the 'worth it' ones are blatantly not real '1 post' wonders
