I am 48 years old with a beautiful and miraculous 4 year old daughter (she came along naturally after several failed IVF cycles). My breasts have been annoying for the past 25 years and very uncomfortable for the last 8 years. I was a D cup from about 20 years old. Got properly fitted at Rigby & Peller (Corsetiers to the Queen, opposite Harrods!) when I was 30 years old in a 32E. I have been wearing properly fitted bras ever since, currently a 32J. I am 5'7" and 168lb ( this time last year I got fit running, playing tennis and gig-rowing and was down to 150lb but developed sciatica and ended up limping badly).
Trying to do physio exercises with a 4 year old jumping on me and strapping myself into body armour to go running was just too overwhelming; I figured in the spring that I just had to wait a few months, my daughter would start full-time school and I could refocus on getting my life into a bit more order. We have no family near enough to help with anything (not even a sleepover). My best friend is great but her son has Aspergers so she has a lot on her plate already.
Last bank holiday weekend I was at an Archery Event, the trainer was saying "Hold it closer to your body" and of course I couldn't, breasts in the way! It reminded me that now would be a good time to do something about them - with daughter at school the impact of the surgery would be less for her. She knows the Dr has said I can have smaller breasts so I can play jumping & skipping and trampolining with her. Someone on Facebook has suggested I make her Head Nurse and she is delighted at the prospect!
Had my first Consultant appointment today, he is happy with everything to proceed (as am I!) and we are looking at operation date mid-November. He is happy to make me a C if I want; I do but need to check it's right for me. As cup-size tends to increase with age, I don't want to be D now and end up an E by the time I'm 60 and wanting more surgery. Scared and excited! I could care less about pretty bras, but very excited about physical comfort. No more body armour!! No more massive grooves in my shoulders! No more ribcage discomfort affecting the base of my oesophagus and digestion. No more sweaty (malodorous!) under breasts. No more skin tags growing on my stomach where the breasts have been rubbing! Bring it on! Xx

That's my surgery date fixed for 16 November - that's 5 weeks tomorrow! That gives me 5 weeks to improve my stomach profile (a large bust draws attention rom the tummy area!). Did a Pilates class on Wednesday for the first time in ages, I can still feel it today. Very excited about buying post surgery bras etc! Very excited about getting the weight off my shoulders! ????

Hi there, really good luck with your surgery. I am also in the UK, a good friend had her reduction last Saturday, home next day and out walking daily, taking no painkillers already! I had a reduction on the NHS aged 19 - that was 37 years ago and I am now back to a 36G, so paying to have it done again some time in the next 3 months. Meeting my surgeon tomorrow. Also fancy going really small this time - B to C cup. It would be liberating! Is your partner supportive? I've read some horrid stuff from and about men, but my husband is superb and totally supportive. Thinks he might get a nice change after 23 years of marriage!!!!

Hi Peediewife! That will be interesting, comparing how they do it all now compared with 37 years ago. Did yours grow back due to weight, children or just general wear & tear over the years? What size were you before previous reduction, and what did you end up with? I would be happy to be a C but I my PS is saying C/D which probably means ending up a D. Will push him to C as much as possible, but I am reasonably large frame 5'7" and BMI c. 25.5. I just don't want to end up an E cup in 10 years and wishing I'd gone smaller! Where are you having it done? Good luck with the surgeon tomorrow! Hubby is absolutely fine about it - we're both very practical people. He is an engineer at Rolls Royce, we have had many discussions over the years about how to engineer a proper job bra for the well-endowed woman; conclusion it can only be done if it's a suit of armour!! Can't wait to get rid of my armour!!

Hello, right have to make sure I answer all your questions. never was properly measured but must have been something like a 34HH in 1976, had surgery on the NHS and an incision I can now find no information on - like a vertical line reduction only my line was horizontal, scar round nipples and sideways onto my ribcage. Really excellent result, was a 34D after surgery. i remember having drains in and it being painful when they were pulled out, also having the suture from internal stitches stick so that they could not get it out, still a bit of blue plastic thread in there somewhere! I remember being anaemic after surgery but having no ill effects from taking iron, and my bruising slipping with gravity so my boobs were not sore but it felt like someone had jumped up and down on my lower ribs. Over the years I have put on weight, I breastfed my second child and also my breasts got even bigger at the menopause. I am not massively overweight with a BMI of about 26.5 but even when I lose weight it does not come off my boobs. I am 5'8.5" with narrow shoulders, waist seems to have disappeared with the menopause, I measure 44-35-41 and hope to end up more like 39 -34-41, pretty well a standard size 16. I am a 14-16 in jeans but 20 on top and one of the main reasons for the op is that my boobs make all of me look size 20! I am having my op done in Lincoln and hoping for 28th December - neither of my student sons expects to be home for Xmas. This time round I am expecting dissolving stitches, hopefully no drains. I may even lose the original scar tissue as part of the procedure.
A friend of mine had the surgery in Edinburgh last saturday, was home next day and is taking daily walks and no painkillers after 2nd day. Re: our tummies she said on coming round it was a case of "the good news is, I can see my tummy.... the bad news is, I can see my tummy" ha ha!

How are you doing, M the V? excited? nervous? Thinking of you. I am sure you will fly through this.

Hi Nellie, I am doing good and quite excited (there is definitely a spring in my step!) but of course if I think about it I get the collywobbles! I have new button-up nightie & PJs; a new pillow and a bed-table - plus 4 packets of bisects and a box of chocolates on standby! I bought a couple of jumpers and a dress on Monday, and have taken photos wearing them so I can compare and contrast afterwards! I love good knitted jumpers, but usually when I put them on I look like the Michelin Man as my large breasts just make me look bulky! So will be exciting to wear something as simple as a jumper and look 'normal'! I think I am ready!!

I met a friend of a friend who had a reduction 2 years ago for a chat on Monday, I had never met her before but she agreed to give me the inside story...it was great to quiz someone in the flesh about it all. She is as happy as a lark and said she would do it again in the morning if needed. She had an infection afterwards but was sorted out quickly with antibiotics. She showed me her 'before' and 'after' photos and i must say she looks fabulous. It was very encouraging. I'll be sending you good thoughts on sat and look forward to your review when you are up to it.

That's great, meeting someone who's been through it. I've only met people with mastectomies, but they are very calm about the whole thing, and laugh a lot about their prosthetic breasts that get wheeled out for special occasions!! So against that, actually having some breasts post op that are more to my liking seems like a great piece of luck. Thanks Nellie, it certainly helps knowing there are people on here who've got an idea what I'm going through & why. I won't be out of surgery until about 4pm so don't worry if no post from me - but if I'm awake I'm guessing I'll be wanting to share!! Xx

Thanks Peediewife, I shall be so nervous, but know it's the right thing! Walking into surgery slightly less scary than getting on an aeroplane! And I could do with a little sleep! Xx
Welcome to the community. I am so glad to have you here with us and we are very excited for you.
You honestly will feel like a new woman when this is done. You will discover new joys in life once you are smaller and perky. It's a bit hard to explain that bliss feeling you have once the weight is gone from your back and shoulders.
If you have help the first couple of nights home after surgery you will do well. My recovery was not so bad. I had more pressure and soreness than I did pain.
Keep us up to date and join in some of the Breast Reduction Forums. You will find excellent support here.
Nice:)
