Melasma Treatment on 48 Year Old Chilean - Brisbane, AU

ORIGINAL POST

I'm 48 year old South American living near Sydney...

WORTH IT$950
I'm 48 year old South American living near Sydney Australia who until 7 years ago never had a mark on my face. One IPL laser treatment that went terribly wrong, in conjunction with the contraceptive pill and years of self medicating left me with pigmentation on my lip, cheeks and forehead that were progressively getting worse.
I decided to seriously challenge my Melasma and seek help from a professional. I found Dr Davin Lim on this website and even though he is based in Brisbane I made the journey to see him.
Dr Lim was amazing! He gave me so much information I wished I had taped the consultation for future reference. Dr Lim's treatment for me after assessing my face was 5% hydroquinone, 2 tabs a day of Tranexamic Acid and Q Switch Laser every two weeks for 10 weeks and of cause sunblock every single day without exception.
I'm on phase two/maintenance of my treatment, Hydroquinone three times a week, 1 tab tranexamic a day and Q Switch every 8-10 weeks. So far so good, my face is becoming a little dry (especially under my eyes) which I'll chat to Dr Lim about in my next visit; Overall I'm incredibly happy with the results; we are also coming into summer so will be interesting to see how my pigmentation goes.
if I had one piece of advice to anyone that is suffering from Melasma, I would say to please please seek professional advice and guidance; I've spend thousands of dollars trying to rid the markings on my face - from internet serums to high end creams/ facial treatments that claimed to lighten and rejuvenate the skin. Nothing worked- Dr Lim was able to achieve what I think is incredible results in 10 weeks!

Dr Lim is an amazing dermatologist, he is straight forward and made sure my expectations were realistic all while being extremely professional. Answered all my 100 questions (I kid you not) and I never felt rushed. I have no hesitation to entrust my face to this doctor. I left his rooms feeling confident I had made the right decision to travel from Wollongong to see him. And then there's nurse Emily, I can not speak more highly about her professional and caring nature; I highly recommend Dr Lim and his team including admin staff who go out of their way to fit me in around flight schedules.

Beautiful results! You must be thrilled. Did you ever try Peruvic peels or Murad before you gave up and headed to Brisbane? Just curious if those were some of the ineffective attempts. Congrats on achieving a make-up free face!
Thank you so much, I'm very happy indeed
wow girl! you look amazing!I have the same problem and have been battle ling this for many years....I have tried every product on the market that promises to work.Thank you for sharing and I will look into this.

Your skin looks great, big improvement. Thanks for sharing your journey here on RealSelf.

My face was damaged by hydroquinone. My melasma looks very similar to yours but the q switch didn't work for me. I only did a test spot and got nervous lasers would make things worse Bc I believe that is why caused my spots.
Years ago I saw a dr that gave me 10% hydroquinone, my face got worse; I went back to him and was told my reaction to the 10% was normal. My skin got thin and sore looking, everything would burn me and leave more dark pigmentation. Not all doctors/dermatologist are equal I'm afraid. Took me a long time to find Dr Lim, but after seeing the results he was getting with other patients with similar skin tones I trust in him 100%. I'm not technical so don't know setting but I do know that the laser I get is very gentle. And on the plus side has done wonders for my wrinkles
Your results are amazing. I have some brown spots on my cheeks and 5 cents size melasma on upper lip. Upper lip melasma disappears when I take multi vitamins but the brown spots are not fading. I’m consulting physician to figure out what vitamin deficiency causing the melasma and seeing a dermatologist as well. In the past I have used triluma(which had hydroquinone) it worked initially with great results but spots reappeared after 3 months. Please keep us updated on your progress.
Thank you; my sister who of cause shares my skin tone also has Melasma but hers seems to come and go depending on her eating/resting, seasons. Hers no where near as offensive or aggressive as mine, and mine never shifted no matter what I did; I'm hoping as we're coming into summer the Melasma will stay as it is right now. I know it will never be gone permanently but I'm happy if i can manage it. Will post post summer pics.
