This will be my third FUT hair transplant with Dr...

This will be my third FUT hair transplant with Dr Russell Knudsen. The first was in Feb 2014 (400 hairs) to thicken up my hair in the temple area and the second was in Nov 2014 (1000 hairs) and this was to bring my hair line forward as I had a rather high hairline. The third FUT hair transplant is scheduled for 14 February 2016 and will be for another 1000 hairs as I feel that the new hairline would look better if its slightly thicker. I believe it is relatively common for a second hair transplant to be required to increase density. I'm hoping this will be my final hair transplant and give me the desired density. As you can see from my pictures, I had a decent amount of hair to start with, I was just wanting to thicken up the temple area and bring my hairline forward by 1cm due to my naturally high hairline. I will update after the hair transplant to let you know how I went.

I am 21 years old and I started my hairloss 1 year ago. what really makes me insecure ist the frontal area. friends and family say that they dont notice anything, but I DO. It really effects me personally and I wanted to ask u if it is okay no have a hairtransplant at my stage.

Hi,good progress, looks good.after your FUT,are you using special hair conditioner (not champpo)? Thank you
February 24, 2017
Hi. I'm just using a regular gentle shampoo and conditioner in addition to washing my hair a couple of times a week with Nizoral 2% shampoo.

hi, im thinking in hair transplant! Fut is cheaper and u can get more grafts, but what about the scar? is noticiable? can i wear my hair short?
May 25, 2017
You'll definitely be left with a scar but I wear my hair pretty short and just ask the barber to leave the hair around the scar slightly longer so no one knows its there unless I show them. I'll post more pictures at the 6 month mark so you can see how my transplant is coming along and also of the scar. At 3 1/2 months the new hairs are only just starting to come through so I want to wait until there is more growth to show

Just some more pictures of my current hairline

Pommie01
Here are some more pictures of my current hairline after I had 1000 hairs transplanted back in 2014. The plan is to get the hairline thicker with an additional 1000 hairs in less than 3 weeks (14 Feb). Dr Knudsen may fill out my temple area too so that its not quite so angular but we'll see. Excuse the grey hairs haha.

Looks natural, good results!

just out of curiosity am not very knowledgable but why your doing FUT and not FUE?
January 29, 2017
FUT is cheaper than FUE in Australia and even though you are left with a scar if you have a good surgeon the scar can be minimised so it is almost undetectable. I've also read that if you are having multiple hair transplants you are better off having FUT for the first few transplants and FUE for the last as having multiple FUE transplants reduces the hair density at the back of your head and I don't want that area of hair to be thin in order to have more hair at the front. I found that this youtube video explains things well... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbEIdPRU9i4

I've not read about someone like yourself who is relatively very young for HT surgery, getting THREE strip surgeries.

Does this mean you get there separate strips out, with three strip scars? Are they three stripes on parallel?

Or do you get a strip cut out above or below the previous one: three strips out but one big scar?
January 29, 2017
Well the first two were in the same area so it just looks like one scar and the third I assume he will use the same area so it'll look like one scar still. Once completed I will let you know. Dr Knudsen has said that he will repair the existing scar in this procedure so I'm hoping that overall it'll be smaller and less visable.

Thanks, this seems to be the best solution for minimal scarring!

Looks really good. Are you taking or have you taken any medication like minoxidil or propecia to maintain you other hair??
March 13, 2017
Yes I take propecia once a day and use a mixture of minoxidil and retinoic acid solution once a day, which I get made for me by a compound chemist. I also wash my hair with nizoral 2% shampoo 3 times a week

Day of Hair Transplant Surgery

Pommie01
The day of my hair transplant finally arrived. Woke up early and had a proper breakfast (because you’re sedated during surgery you need food in your stomach to stop nausea). Anyway my operation was at 8:30am and I got to the clinic in Brisbane with about 30 mins to spare. Doctor Knudsen and his team of nurses (who flew up from Sydney the night before) turned up not long after I arrived and I was taken into a side room where I put on a gown and then Dr Knudsen discussed exactly what I wanted done (even though we’d previously discussed that I was having 1000 hairs to the frontal hairline area and temples to thicken up the last hair transplant) and he drew on with a marker where the hairs would be placed. He showed me everything in a mirror so that I was happy . Once all agreed he shaved the donor area at the back of my head where the donor hair would be taken from and then I was taken in to the operating room where I met the team of three nurses. Once on the operating bed I was sedated (so you are in a twilight state) and local anesthetic injected into the back of my head (donor area) and hairline for where the grafts would be placed. To be honest after about 30 mins I fell a sleep so I don’t remember much but I didn’t experience any pain just some light tugging when the donor strip was being removed from the back of my head and that was about it. Once the donor strip was removed the team of nurses separated the individual hair grafts, while Dr Knudsen made the incisions in the front of my hair line and temples. Once all done Dr Knudsen and another nurse started implanting the hairs into the tiny holes made in my hairline and temples. After dozing for about 3 hours I was allowed to get up and go to the bathroom and then continued with the implants. Everything was all done after about 5-6 hours and I was given some food and drink and given my post op instructions and meds and told how to care for the new grafts and the donor area. Every 15 mins I was to apply a solution via a spray bottle to the grafts that contained saline and PTP.
My friend then picked me up at 3pm and I went straight home for a cup of tea and I felt really good if not a bit delicate. I kept applying the saline and PTP solution every 15 mins. By about 5pm I started to feel really tired and achy though so just lounged on the couch and ate and drank lots of water as I was really thirsty and felt dehydrated.
Went to bed about 8pm and took a Neurofen plus and a sleeping pill as instructed and slept pretty well, although it was hard to find a comfortable head position with the incision on the back of my head and the transplants at the the front and temples. I also had to sleep in a shower cap to keep the grafts moist. I woke about 3:30am and couldn’t get back to sleep and was really hungry so just watched TV.

Looks amazing. Did Dr Knudsen fix/cover the previuos scar? And how the new one looks like? Very noticeable?
November 9, 2017
wow Mate, Im seeing Mr. Knudsen on 4th December around 8:30am in Auckland. going to get 1000 FUT grafts. How was your donor area? did you feel any pain in next few days? I had traction Alopecia at the front and lost all the hair from my hairline. so I got around 700 FUE year ago just to see how they gonna go on me and it was good but they were not enough so Im seeing Russel now and he said 1000 grafts will give me better density and coverage. so Im really looking forward to it. did you experience any pain through out the whole process? were you still drowsy after the surgery or you were fully conscious at the end of it?
November 10, 2017
Hey. No pain during the procedure as you have a local anesthetic in the donor and recipient areas. The nurses regularly ask if you are feeling any pain so its not an issue to get more anesthetic if you need it . Probably the most painful bit is getting the injections. You have a sedative injection before the operation in your upper arm too so that makes you feel relaxed and sleepy. I think I dosed off during the operation but once I was home in the afternoon I felt fine. No pain in the donor area after really. Obviously it feels tender because you had a piece of your scalp removed but as long as you're gentle its fine. I slept on my side for the first couple of weeks as it was uncomfortable to put pressure on the donor area, but other than that I was fine. Took the minimum pain meds and was back to work 2 days later and felt pretty normal within about a week once I was washing my hair again and most of the scabs had gone. I was back exercising and at the gym after 2 weeks. I'll put up some recent pictures so you can see what my hairline looks like now. Good luck with it all and I'm sure it'll go well :)

Sleeping to the side didn’t affect your transplant area? When I had fue i was told not to sleep sideways
November 10, 2017
No it was fine as my transplant area didn’t touch the pillow. First night I slept on my back because my donor area was all numb but once the feeling had come back it was to painful to put pressure on it so slept on my side 2nd night onwards
