Why Did I Get Cellulitis

Why Did I Get Cellulitis

Had breast reduction 17 Jan 23. Was told 4 lbs total removed. I’ve been sleeping in a recliner, showering everyday, only soap and water with a clean facecloth each time. Only “problem” I was having was fluid buildup in left breast which was enough to hide my collar bone and prevent relaxing left arm. I did not have drains.

Infection was my biggest concern (had pimples and rash under breasts day of surgery and told Dr I was afraid infection was unavoidable) was prescribed antibiotics after procedure and completed them all.

1 Feb I felt very itchy. 2 Feb I took 2 showers because it felt like my incisions were on fire. Had to remove my compression bra that afternoon due to feeling like it was burning me.

When the “burning started on 1 Feb I thought it was the “healing itch” and nerves waking up but within 24 hrs I was SO on fire and red I knew something was wrong. Even tho I had no fever.

I just got back from ER. Told it was cellulitis. More antibiotics. What did I do wrong? I was so careful. Washing my hands. Clean compression bra/shirt everyday. Let chest air dry rather than risk even touching with a possibly dirty towel. Then put clean compression bra and shirt on. Took short walks each day but zero weight lifted, no stretching. Not sleeping in bed with dirty sheets. Drank lots of water. I don’t smoke/drink. Don’t have diabetes or any other health conditions. However I’m 55 & a bit overweight. Size was 40 J. I just can’t think of anything I did wrong.

Now I can’t wear my compression bra (hurts way too much). I was told to keep my incisions dry and not cover (and doesn’t that make worse scars?).

I’ll try to just be glad I have less back/shoulder pain (and when this clears up) less rashes.

Sitting in my recliner tonight wondering what’s gonna happen and if I‘ll really be glad…

I can’t see my surgeon till next week sometime (he’ll call me). ER resident took a picture and texted it to him and agreed it’s cellulitis. Prescribed sulfamethoxazole twice a day. Call if puss or blisters appear.

I don’t believe it’s anyone’s fault but was there something I could have done that I didn’t?

Anyway. Wish me luck. I’ll let ya know if it was worth it.

I got my procedure thru the VA so no cost.
I had a similar experience. I was allergic to the suture material and they kept popping out. Take your meds and know that you didn’t do anything wrong. Sometimes despite our best efforts, things can go badly. I must say that my surgeon was extremely responsive and never made me wait to talk with him or come into the office. For me, the measure of a good doctor is how they act when the operation is over and there is a complication. Best of luck to you. It will get better!
