Four words changed my life forever: “You have breast cancer.”
It was a journey I never imagined I would be on. The moment I heard those words, I went straight into action mode to save my life. I scheduled my double mastectomy with reconstruction without hesitation, grateful that I still had the chance to fight and keep living.
As the months passed and healing began, my reconstruction didn’t go as planned. It was the one part of this journey I couldn’t prepare for.
Every time I looked in the mirror, I was reminded of what cancer had taken from me.
That’s where Dr. Armijo and his team came in.
He wasn’t my original plastic surgeon. I came to him feeling defeated, praying he wouldn’t send me away with a situation too complicated to fix.
Instead, he listened.
Dr. Armijo and his team took the time to hear my story, understand my fears, and reassure me that while I could never get back exactly what cancer took from me, there was still hope for healing. Physically and emotionally.
My body still needed time to fully heal, so we made a plan and scheduled my pre-op appointment for a few months later. The moment I walked out of his office, I knew I had found the right surgeon.
The morning of surgery, my final words to him were: “You make whatever decision you feel is best on the operating table. I trust you.”
Two days later, when I saw my results for the first time, I cried tears of joy.
Dr. Armijo gave me back more than just my breasts. He gave me back a part of myself. He gave me back confidence, comfort in my own skin, and the feeling of being feminine again.
I will forever be grateful for the care, compassion, and kindness I received from Dr. Armijo and every single member of his staff. They walked with me through one of the hardest chapters of my life, and I will never forget that.
