Bilateral Mastectomy with Immediate Reconstruction
WORTH IT
The results of my bilateral nipple sparing mastectomy with immediate reconstruction are truly remarkable. I am incredibly grateful to God for leading me to Dr. Aldona Speigel and Dr. Sherry Lim
From the moment I met Dr. Speigel, I knew she would be performing my reconstruction surgery. She was kind, attentive, and most importantly, she actively listened to my preferences. She asked me to email pictures of breasts that resembled what I desired, and she helped me visualize my final result.
I understood that no matter the outcome, I would find peace in knowing that the cancer had been removed. However, I must admit that I was also concerned about body image.
Now, exactly 12 weeks post-surgery, I can confidently say that my breast shape is significantly improved compared to before. I feel great about how I look.
Initially, I had consulted with other surgeons from a very reputable cancer center for both the plastic surgery and the removal of the cancer. However, I left their consultations feeling unassured and even negative about the nipple sparing procedure. When the original surgery day arrived in September, I decided to forego nipple sparing and opt for skin sparing, as the nurse practitioner who worked with the surgeon had warned me about the potential risks and complications, including necrosis and the possibility of having one nipple pointing up and the other down. She basically told me that I would regret it if I did it.
But as I mentioned earlier, God intervened, and my original surgery was canceled. The next day I searched for new surgeons and found Dr. Aldona Speigel and Dr. Sherry Lim, who work together as a surgical team.
Dr. Lim removed the cancerous tissue and performed a technical procedure which attempts to reconnect nerves in the nipple and breast.
It is very difficult to tell as of yet because I'm not fully healed, but I do feel sensation in my right nipple which is promising.
Dr Aldona Spiegal used advance technologies to ensure that there was enough blood flow to do immediate reconstruction and proceeded to perform her artistic magic.
I am full of gratitude for these two amazing women.
