Investigative surgery 5 wks post op
Last Thursday my surgeon went in to check out and drain my breast. What a great experience given the circumstances. They called me to the surgery clinic Thursday morning. I hung out watched tv and was totally relaxed. I was in and out before I knew it. They found "yellow" fluid collection next to my implant. He said he couldn't tell if it was just seroma fluid or infection. He drained , cleaned and popped a new implant in. So fast forward a few days and I feel way better. I have been taking antibiotics and was given iv antibiotics while I was in surgery. I got the culture back today and it turns out I had a very very mild Staph infection. The surgeon and I are both perplexed on how I managed to contract that, my incisions closed and healed without a hook. And 4 weeks had gone by symptom free. It's very odd how deep the infection was and how mild for 4+ weeks post op. I have been given another course of antibiotics for safe measure and follow up in two weeks. Keep you posted.
Complications update.
This morning I was feeling more swollen today. Visually not hugely noticeable but pressure wise. My surgeon got me in for an urgent ultrasound and they have discovered fluid against my implant. He can not know for sure if it is infection or a blood vessel or an implant rejection. We weighed the pros and cons and we decided against having a radiologist guided needle biopsy to collect the sample for risk of puncturing the implant and also decided against the MRI because if it is an infection, really it should not wait for the MRI to be ordered and read to only find out he needs to go in anyways. So the plan is tomorrow he will go in and investigate, drain and send a sample for culture and clean the area or cauterize and put a new implant in. He said if there is a grumpy infection then he will wait to put the implant in until antibiotic are completed and the cavity is healed. I have to say I am feeling very well taken care of. I have felt welcomed and respected throughout this whole process. I still would do it again even though I have had a few complications. My results are still breasts I've only dreamed of. I feel like I am getting first class treatment. And my complications feel like part of the process more than anything. Meaning I feel so well taken care of and so quickly and thoroughly that I don't even feel stressed or worried. I know I am going to get exactly the outcome I desire.
4 weeks post op. Infection?
Things have been going fantastic. Feeling great. Incisions closed and bruising essentially gone. Every morning I notice things are a little stiff and sore, I figure it's likely because I've been sleeping on my back and not moving much at night. I need to make note I have not experienced any pain since my surgery only pressure. On Saturday I noticed my left breast was actually a little sore, I figured I must have slept funny and did too much the day before. Throughout the weekend the pain began to get much worse, radiating down my arm. My breast has gotten swollen and tender. I was surprised because this is not the breast I had the hematoma on. This morning again pain is much worse to the point I can barely lift my arm and I am sore to touch all the way up to my collar bone and down under my ribs. I called my surgeon and he got me in in as soon as I could drive there. He checked me out and I have mild temper of 100.4. He's not a 100% sure if I have an infection or some fluid around my ribs. My breasts are both still soft and no redness. The surgeon is treating me for early infection. He has given me Keflex antibiotic and emtec for pain. The plan is if I am feeling a little better by tomorrow I will continue the antibiotic course. If I am the same pain or worse tomorrow. I will go for blood work and an ultrasound. Then on Thursday he will decide if surgical intervention is needed. I guess the hope is that if it is an infection it is not around the actual implant. So here's hoping....... updates soon!
