Do not trust your body with him
The experience was horrible, unorganized and I felt unsupported the entire process.
Dr. Peter Newen performed a breast augmentation on me and I now have symmastia. Symmastia is when your breasts grow together, with little or no cleavage between them. I have a web of skin across the cleavage area that is not normal after augmentation and acquired symmastia was a complication of the breast augmentation surgery I got done here.
From the beginning, dr. Newen was not there. He was not present during my consultation to discuss size, profile, or anything related to surgery. This is your first sign ladies. If the surgeon who is performing surgery on you isn’t even there to see if you are a good candidate, run.
I only spoke to Jane, who is not board-certified and now looking back should not be recommending sizes. She originally recommended 400cc (oversized for my body) I explained that another surgeon recommended 175cc and she guaranteed me that we could go bigger.
On my pre-op day, dr Newen finally walks in and gives me 10 minutes of his time… 10 minutes!!!! That’s insane. There are so many other more attentive surgeons who will spend at least 1 hour with you in the consultation alone to answer all questions with you and size you appropriately. Dr Newen proposed that my left breast needed a bigger implant to make them even. However, now the left breast is bigger than the right, completely disregarding the purpose of placing a bigger implant in one in the first place. The left one that has the bigger implant was also placed 1.5 cm lower than the right. I asked him about my sunken chest (pectus excabatum) because another surgeon pointed this out to me and said bigger is riskier and they could be too close together. Dr. Newen said he’s done this on patients with much deeper chests and it still turns out beautiful and that them coming together won’t happen.
During your consultation and pre-op, you are not given anything. I did not receive any written packet, information, or instructions before surgery. You are left empty-handed with nothing to read over and go back to.
When I arrived for surgery day, dr. Newen gave me 3 minutes of his time (a total of 13 minutes before he performed surgery on my body) to draw lines on my chest. That’s it.
I woke up and never saw him in person again even though I requested to see him in person on 3 different occasions after surgery. The pain medication they provide is only Tylenol too. The healing was so painful!!
Go with someone else who cares more about you as a person and patient. Someone who will understand your concerns and listens to you even post-op.
If you still choose him, please know what to expect:
After surgery, you will have a post-op appointment and dr Newen will not be there. He will have a nurse do the follow up with you instead to check out your breasts.
Your 6 week, 3 month, and 6 month appointment will be the same. I specifically called and requested to see dr. Newen (you shouldn’t have to request this!!! A surgeon should be there following up with you after to make sure everything is healing correctly.) and still did not see him.
I took time off work to drive from San Diego to my 6 week appointment and called earlier in the week to confirm dr. Newen would be seeing me and was told yes (since I was surprised I was set up with a nurse a few days after surgery) and when I arrived I was told he was performing surgery in the other location. Of course, I wanted him to see my process since I had questions and concerns about how close my breast was moving together.
I was set up on a facetime video later that week - he said everything was normal and that the reason my breasts are not even and he said my chest was uneven to start with. When did he tell me this during the 13 minutes he gave me in pre-op and surgery day? I specifically asked about this. He then disregarded my concerns and said that the bigger implant placed won’t make a difference. But I see the difference and so can other people and other surgeons. He gave me 6 minutes of his time on this call so now I have had a total of 20 minutes of interaction with him…
3 month update - I called to confirm I would be seeing him and was told my appointment was set up with a nurse so I rescheduled it so I can for sure see the surgeon! 10 minutes before I was supposed to drive to Irvine and finally see him in person jane called and asked to switch it to a facetime appointment. I saw dr. Newen again virtually and told him that the skin in the middle is lifted and it looks like 1 boob. It is uncomfortable and painful to work out because the muscle is lifted off the middle. He said he did not lift the skin in the middle and completely disregarded my concerns again. I felt rushed and could tell he was annoyed having to spend time with me. This call lasted 9 minutes. Less than 1 hour total!
For my 6 month appointment, I called again to confirm I would be seeing him and you guessed it.. No. I rescheduled because I wanted to see him in person to show him how my breasts turn into 1 and the skin in the middle lifts. I called the morning of my appointment and was told he was unavailable. I said how could that be? I rescheduled earlier this week specifically to see him? Then was told actually he will be able to see you. So I take time off work, drive from san diego and they make me wait 1 hour and 30 minutes in a room by myself while he is finishing a surgery!!! After this time, he does not walk in. Only jane. I showed her that my breasts aren’t even sitting even, the skin in the middle lifts off my sternum and the left is bigger because of the bigger implant placed. She said the middle part lifting is normal and that this happens to her too. What?! Ladies this is not normal! You should have two separate breasts that don’t come together to look like 1 no matter how much you push them together. She offered a revision. How can I trust this place? She is offering procedures without the surgeon ever seeing me and evaluating me as a doctor!
Don’t believe social media. They only take pictures of cases that turn out okay. They only have my pre-op photos available for my progress because I was never set up correctly with their office. They can’t even show you a before or after of my case.
I am so jealous of my friends who went with good surgeons who give them their personal phone numbers in case of any concerns, gives them paper packets with information, all of their photos and paperwork, and is there next to them when they wake up and there after surgery. Please be careful! If you are going to invest time and money in this procedure go to the best! I wish I went with my original consultation dr. Teitelbaum. Yes, he is more expensive but is the best for a reason. He spends time with you during consultation, measures, and gives you an honest answer about what size is best for your specific body. Gives you his phone number and is known for having 24 hour recovery.
