On the 14th of December I had my breast augmentation at the Belgian Breast Clinic (BBC). I myself struggled with certain questions before and after surgery. Therefore I want to provide you some pre- and post-op information and advice. It is quite a read but I hope it will help some of you out. Please note that I write this bases my own experience, further literature and information I gathered on RealSelf.

As the title showed I got Motiva ProgressiveGel PLUS (round), 295 cc (full profile), dual plane, inframammary incision and went from 70B to a 70E (European measurements). I am petite, have a athletic posture, train 5 times a week, have no kids and I am 28 years old.

Pre operation

1. Be aware of the risks
Not to scare you, but be aware of the risks. Despite technology and knowledge nowadays, there is no guarantee for a 'good' result.

2. Expectations versus (im)possibilities of your body

- Ask everything.
What I believe that is the most important is to communicate your expectations. If you are picturing the 'round, big cleavage wish boobies' show these examples to your surgeon and ask if the result that you are picturing is (even) possible. The only thing (s)he can and will guarantee you is that your boobs are going to be bigger. Everything else is an expectation, like bra size. There are simulator that claim to predict 'the result' of your breast augmentation. (I personally believe that is a waste of money and may lead to disappointment afterwards).
A breast augmentation depends on the (im)possibilities of your body. I bring this up because I have read a lot about the ‘gab’ between the breasts (intermammary cleft in medical terms) and how to get rid of it. (Mostly this question is asked after surgery and therefore I want you to realise this before surgery). The answer to the question is simple; you can not undo this gab with surgery. If you have a wide gab now, you will have a wide gab with implants. As you can see, I also have I wide gab. It was there before and it is still there (my gab is approximately 3 fingers wide). Implants have a certain diameter. If you don’t have a wide chest, you won’t be able to get really big implants, because there is simply not enough space. If you insist on having really large boobs with a small chest, you can, but half the implant will be wider than your chest which can cause inconveniences with day-to-day activities.

- Make pictures
When fitting implants make pictures so you will remember what it looks like later on. If you struggle with the size or what to want to know what it is going to look like in a bra surgeons recommend tot fill bags with rice (make sure you put your scale on ml because ccml). I did do that myself. See picture for reference.

3. Size does matter
Proper size prevent displacement. Be aware that larger implants (500cc or more) are typically more prone to displace downward or outwards.

3. The surgeon
Because I stated that your own body and the size of the implants effect the result I highly recommend to listen to the (objective) surgeon especially with downsizing. In the end (s)he does know best.
But if you have the idea that the surgeon does not know best (and thereby I mean when the surgeon is subjective) I would recommend to get your breast augmentation elsewhere. I have read a lot of reviews claiming that the surgeon did e.g. push to go bigger. I believe a surgeon should inform you what your possibilities are and what not, but needs to stay objective and should not force you in getting a certain type or size of implant.

4. Motiva Implants
The Motiva implants consist of gel. They use the ProgressiveGel (round), the Progressive Gel PLUS (round) and the ProgressiveGel Ultima (teardrop implants or ergonomix how they call them).
The profile you can get are: mini, demi, full or cores. They use different names for this. I think you can compare this to low, moderate, high and ultra high. If you are wondering what profile you are getting (or other girls got/have) you can look at the amount of cc’s. In the table on their website you can see which volume correspond with which profile. E.g. 380 cc (purple column) demi profile.

5. BBC
If you want fair, honest and professional advice, and a fabulous result I think BBC is the place to be. My breast were uneven and the one was bigger than the other. Dr. Verdonck managed to even my breast out and make them the same in volume with the same implants (295 cc on both sides).

6. For the girls who lift

- Exercise pre operation
It is recommended to not go to the gym the week before surgery because this will increase pain after surgery. I stopped training my chest two weeks before surgery but went to the gym till one day before surgery. I keep going to the gym not to be stubborn but I simply didn’t know. Despite that I did not experience a lot of ‘extra’ pain. I have not been in pain at all actually because of the prescribed medication. I would recommend to stop training your chest way before surgery because the looser the muscle the easier for the surgeon to put the implants in place (if dual plane).

- Exercise in the future
I was really worried that I would not be able to train my chest anymore but my surgeon told me not to worry about migration of the implants (well at least if you are not ‘a real bodybuilder’). Despite this I have decided not the bench or train chest anymore. Better safe than sorry.

Post-operation

1. Do not peek
If your new chest is covered in bandage that is a total bummer. But, as excited as you are, leave the bandage on the time recommended. This is important for the placement of the implants. Also make sure to keep the bandage dry. Wet bandage is a dream come true for bacteria and you sure as h*ll want to keep those lill [RS bleep] away from your wounds. If you are wondering why: Google 'breast infection - implant gone wrong'. (I highly recommend not to watch that tho).

2. For the girls who lift

- Wait
Do not use your breast muscles to early. The surgeon will burn an incision in your muscle to place the implant (again if dual plane). I am glad I knew this afterwards and maybe you rather don't want to know but by sketching this image I hope that you will understand the importance of not using the muscle. If you do, your muscle may tear and therefore the implant will shift/move; you will be in serious pain and your breast will look weird. If you want to know what that looks like Google 'implant displacement' (which means shifting or migration from the implant up, down or to the sides) '.

- Wear the elastic band
Especially when muscular wear the elastic band above your breast all the time as long as required to prevent your implants from migrating upwards.

I hope this is useful information.

If you want a breast augmentation please inform yourself. If you have your surgery planned I wish you the best of luck!

Thabkyou for so much info! I'm thinking to get the same procedure and wondering of the effect on the appearance of the impalte by different placement methods!

A different method will have a different result. I don't think you 'get to choose' the procedure. This depends on the autonomy of your body (e.g. I could not get the implant placed in front of the muscle even if I wanted, because my skin is too soft) and the techniques your surgeon is familiar with. Dual-plane is the newest and most promising technique tho (according to science).

Hi. Thanks for sharing! I'm having a BA and am really concerned about animation deformity and loss in strength/being limited in the gym as I'm a training fanatic and love lifting. Have heard pushing and pulling is painful and difficult when choosing dual plane. Have you gone back to the gym yet? How is it working for you please? Thanks x

I understand your concern. You are going to lose some gains in your upper body, but I think it is loss worth losing. You might have to step up your game a little after, but hey, you have nice [RS bleep] ;). I would do it again in no time.

I have to wait two more weeks before I can train upper body again. I tried shoulders, back, biceps and triceps with light weights only to check if I would feel the implants. No problems there. Only exercises which invole much chest muscle activity give problems (so far). My surgeon told me not to worry about e.g. bench press after surgery, because that only give problems if you bench 'a real lot' (but I did not mention I bench my own body weight, so I do not know what 'a real lot' actually means). I am having a checkup in a few weeks and I am going to discuss that with my surgeon again and be more specific.

Update after two years. Within the two years I had no pain, other complaints or whatsoever. I went for my yearly checkup half a year ago. Everything was fine, although Verdonck recommended me to use some oil to keep the skin elastic (which I have to admit, forget regularly).
Powerlifting is going good, including bench.

Your boobs look fantastic. Great to hear that you're still lifting! I've found your review very helpful. I'm in the UK and am booked for dual plane with Motiva ergonomix later this month. I haven't done much lifting recently but did in my 20s and may want to again. Currently I do lots of bodyweight work eg planks and press-ups. My surgeon says I'll be fine to exercise as normal once healed, but some articles seem to suggest otherwise so your review is reassuring. Thanks for the update.

It is a little overdue. Did you get your surgery?
April 9, 2021
Hello, Do you by any change have a picture from pre-op. I also have an appointment with Dr. Verdonck for Motiva 300 cc. If the result in increase is the same I would be very happy.
Your result is giving me confidence.
thx in advance.

A little overdue, but did you get the surgery and happy with the results? There is a picture in my first post that is pre-operation.

Your breast look great. I’m a former power lifter and now do CrossFit. I was very concerned about loss of strength and muscle animation if I went under the muscle. Have you experience any muscle animation or strength loss from dual plane placement?
July 10, 2022
No, none. I started the Hybrid powerlifting program and gained more than ever. That program includes 3 x bench a week. Sometimes I have some chest pain if I overdue it, but that is just my body telling me to slow down, which is good.

Amazing results. Have you found you have put xtra weight on since having your BA.
July 10, 2022
What do you mean by putting on xtra weight? As in general?
February 22, 2023
Thanks for your posts! How long did it take you to get back to benching / training upper body? I do CrossFit which involves lots of upper body strength and dynamic movements which I’m hoping my surgery won’t put me too far back.
April 16, 2023
Taking a step back is part of the deal. How far you are set back depends on skills of the surgeon, implant type and shape, implant placement and how fast your body recovers. How fast you gain strength highly depends on muscle memory (i.e. time you have been lifting).

I left I could start powerlifting after a month or so, but I did as I was told and waited several more months. I can not seem to recall what the surgeon recommended. I believe it was between 3 and 6 months.
