Disappointing Results and Disappointing Doctor

I am coming up on my 5 year anniversary of a breast augmentation procedure with Dr. Chun (6/12/19). Although I have given myself plenty of time and space since my original procedure, 5 years later and I am still very unhappy with Dr. Chun's work. I am also still upset by how I was treated as a patient. I do not take it lightly to share such a negative review, so please understand that I am leaving this as a genuine warning to anyone who is considering surgery with Dr. Chun. I am sorry I did not do this sooner.

A quick summary: Communication with Dr. Chun is limited and difficult. She has a team of people that create barriers to patients communicating with her directly. In the moments when I did communicate with her directly, she seemed focused on protecting herself and her time rather than actually listening to my issue and helping me. After my procedure, she was dismissive of my concerns and unwilling to take responsibility for the unsatisfactory results. Overall she lacks professionalism, accountability, and empathy. And she does not make up for it in surgical skill. See below for more details on my experience.

When I met Dr. Chun for a consultation, we discussed surgery for my breasts, which were asymmetrical, with one sagging more than the other, and having some qualities of a tuberous breast. She advised that implants along with the right surgical technique could correct them, and that she had corrected tuberous breasts before using this approach. Dr. Chun believed that the implants would also provide adequate lift for my ptosis. I understood that results could not be guaranteed, but Dr. Chun also indicated her willingness to perform a secondary procedure if the first did not fully address the issues I was facing.

I did not get the opportunity to consult with Dr. Chun on the implant size. Her nurses did a quick session with me and advised on small sizes in the low 200s (they said their office doesn't do "Miami" augmentations). Ultimately, while I was on the table unaware of what final size would be picked, Dr. Chun put in 195cc Natrelle Inspira. (At a later consult Dr. Chun would admit that a bigger size would have given me better results, and yet this was the size she had chosen).

I underwent the procedure with Dr. Chun and almost immediately after, I could see that the results were poor. In my early follow up with Dr. Chun I showed her that there was a clear demarcation between my breast tissue and the implant. She encouraged me to massage the tissue and said we need to wait a year to see the full results before considering a secondary procedure.

At no point prior to my surgery was there discussion of the possibility or likelihood of contour irregularity or any sort of double-bubble deformity. I signed a hospital waiver while I was in the bed at Brigham with an IV already placed in my arm, moments before the procedure. I had not been provided a copy of the waiver beforehand and the contents had not been discussed. The waiver went into some of the possible risks and complications, and made me sign away my rights if I am dissatisfied with the results.

Six months after the surgery, the issue had become even more apparent as the swelling went down. Unlike my original ptosis, I left the surgery with a very irregular and unnatural acquired deformity. I shared pictures and spoke with Dr. Chun on the phone, and she was amenable to correcting the issue and she actually said she would waive the surgeon’s fee. However, she again said we should revisit in one year’s time for the full result.

At the one-year mark, Dr. Chun and I spoke, and she went back on her earlier promise to perform a revision waiving the surgeon’s fee. She said she would only be willing to remove the implants. I told her that this would leave me in a worse place than I started, with my original issue and additionally stretched skin and scarring from the procedure. She told me I should wait 8–10 years to swap my implants and pursue a revision at that time. I told her I did not want to live with these results for that long and she said I should seek another doctor as she would not be able to correct my results.

In the year and a half following my procedure, Dr. Chun communicated very poorly with me. She used multiple tactics to convince me that the issue I am experiencing is not worth fixing, when it is me who must live with the results of the procedure. I was led on to believe that she would help fix the results of her initial surgery and then she rescinded it.

Lastly, Dr. Chun misrepresented my results in surgical notes. She took photos in which the double bubble was not apparent and stated that it was only present when my arms are lifted. The double bubble is present when my arms are lifted, at rest, and when laying down. I am attaching photos for reference.

I have subsequently consulted with five board certified plastic surgeons who have stated that my poor results are a direct result of Dr. Chun’s surgical approach and execution. I now need to pay for a full surgical revision with a new surgeon who was not involved in the initial surgery, and who will price it higher because it is considered more complicated than a primary procedure.

It's possible that Dr. Chun is capable of executing a more basic/straightforward breast augmentation than mine was. Even so, I would say, no matter how simple your procedure, avoid this doctor. There are plenty of other doctors that will take better care of you.
