Medical History Issues

ORIGINAL POST

Office review: do not go here

If I could give them no stars I would! Let me say everyone was polite and helpful until it came to Cristy Bastardo. She reviews the pre-op documentation. I filled out all of the medical forms truthfully and honestly and answered all questions honestly. NOWHERE on the forms does it ask about current or previous mental illness. AFTER I paid my deposit, paid for pre-op labs, went to see my PCP for medical clearance, Mrs. Bastardo cancelled my surgery with a subpar explanation that the doctors she works with don’t take patients with bi-polar disorder. I am not currently under the care of a psychiatrist. I am not taking medication and have not been for months. A psychiatrist I saw in January 2020 considered my condition in remission and all of this was stated in my pre-op paperwork from my PCP yet my surgery was cancelled without consideration of ALL variables. I understand the doctor not taking certain medical conditions but if there are conditions that exclude patients...this should be stated up front! And if mental illness is an exclusion than they should ask about it on the medical history form! I do not understand not asking about a condition on the medical history form but than excluding someone for such condition! They also told me I’m not eligible for a refund! Even though they never asked about previous mental illness on the form! Ridiculous! Cheaper is not always better!

I’m sooooo sorry that this happened to you and I FULLY agree with you concerning their screening process and procedures!! Is there ANYONE that you can appeal the decision and refund policy to? Good luck to you.
Thank you so much. Actually, I was contacted by finance department today who said I wasn’t eligible for a refund but that my surgical coordinator would contact me about rescheduling with another doctor. I am currently awaiting her contact to see if they actually will reschedule me with anyone else because when I called their customer service, I was told no one there would do my bbl or any other procedure for me because of my history of bi-polar disorder. Hopefully, there are not the type of clinic that discriminates like this. I will update soon.
Good luck to you and I pray that things will get resolved to your satisfaction. On a side note, I LOVE your honesty and candidness concerning your mental health status however, with the way that you have been treated shows that we have such a long way to go in this country concerning mental illness and it also demonstrates why many of us are not forthcoming and don’t openly talk about it. It’s sad and discouraging that in the year 2020 mental health still continues to be looked down upon and discriminated against. Again, good luck.
Thank you. I really don’t try to hide it. I have started a public support group for people trying to battle mental health issues and navigate the world. That’s why I was frustrated because I was treated as if I hid the information when in actuality, it’s just not asked about on their form. But thank you.
