Braces! :D

My dentist has been telling me for over six years that I need braces. Not because my teeth aren’t straight on the top but because my bite is off and it’s causing multiple problems. My teeth on the bottom are chipping because the way they hit my top teeth and they are overcrowded. And the dentist said my teeth flex when I bite down so that it causes friction on my gum line which is damaging my gums. So I finally bit the bullet and got braces! Sadly Invisalign wouldn’t work for my bite problems. The first week was miserable and I had no idea how anyone does this. I’m now 4 weeks in and it’s getting easier. The pain is gone for now. I just want to get through this as quickly as possible!

I'm into my second week of top and bottom metal braces following 9 months of a top jaw appliance that required "activating".... ie expanding, every 4 weeks. The whole process was agony, including having resin blocks on my back molars so none of my teeth met and I can only use these to chew still. Each expansio set my teeth and jaw off for a couple of weeks; easing up after that for a couple of weeks then ramped up again. The whole reason for all this is to deal with my dislocating jaw with closed reduction, a result of top jaw being too small for bottom jaw.......with over 50 years of trying to accommodate this (clicking jaw joint) -finally locked up. I know i have no other alternative apart from surgical breaking and setting, so I just have to do it. Removing the expander was the worst and I agree - the first week of these braces was horrible and i seriously contemplated getting them removed. I dont think I'll last 2 years especially when every 4-6 weeks they will be tightened. Longterm pain is the worst thing and i can only suggest good pain relief, the occassional sleeping tablet and lots of wax...... its not easy!

You poor thing!!! I only just saw this comment. I am so sorry to hear you have to go through all of that, and this. I feel like the tightening of the braces isn’t too bad. The beginning was the worst of it. We just have to tell ourselves I’ll be worth it once it’s over! How long do you have to wear your braces?

What type of appliance did you wear? I thought only kids could use them?

Tightening!

So for me getting my braces tightened wasn’t too bad. I had two days of some soreness but nothing unmanageable. My teeth are already straightening out a lot on the bottom. I’m so excited to get through with this process. I hate having braces. I look like a dork and they do cut up my mouth. Also flossing is just a pain.

Close to Six months in

So I can say that I’m surprised that it’s almost been 6 months into this process. I’m glad it’s going quickly. I still hate having braces and am embarrassed to smile. But I’m excited to see the changes and I can actually bite down and my back teeth touch and my front teeth aren’t hitting each other. There is still a lot of work to be done to have the perfect smile but I know it’ll be worth it!

Hey, i had similar issues with bottom teeth. I got braces to and now they are great. Im 30 and literally got messed with by my buddies at work all the time for getting adult braces but now mine are off and i talk about their uncorrected teeth issues and you can see the insecurity come to life. Not to make them insecure (we all ex military and you have to have thick skin) but to prove its always better to take action on things regardless of what other say about the process.

I love this thank you!! It’s hard to have them. Humbling! Ha. But I really must fix the issues so that my teeth aren’t ruined. They were cracking and chipping because of the way they hit when I bit down. It’s already so much better. 6 more months according to my dr and it’ll be over. Thanks for the encouragement!! I’m thankful that you are happy you did it! What is better than a great smile? I can’t think of anything :)

Hi Honey! I had braces put on in my late 40’s!! My parents never thought I needed them. It was the best decision I’ve made as an adult. It gave me so much confidence in my smile. You will be in awe when it’s all said and done!! My gosh, you’re the epitome of beauty!!

You are such an angel my dear. Thank you. Having adult braces is so hard isn’t it? I feel so embarrassed but I know you are right and I’ll be happy I did it once it’s over. We are so similar!!!

I would always tell people (the ones that would talk to me and stare at my mouth) that I have braces on and will be wearing them for 18 months. I found myself having to explain why I’m wearing them, which is really no one’s business. I love my smile now, and just had veneers placed over my top two teeth (review #9). Lol. It’s made a dramatic difference in my overall smile

Same, I found myself explaining why I had braces to people I never talked on a regular basis!

Yep, it’s just my insecurity always thinking people are critiquing me!! Now... I’m SMILING like no one’s business. :-).

I was so embarrassed that when ever I saw anyone the very first thing I said was, “I have braces.” To address the elephant in the room is how I felt. I felt like people would see it and not say anything but be thinking about it and if I didn’t say that it would be weird ha ha. But mostly I’m just weird about it. I see so many reviews for braces where people say smile no one even notices. I feel like every single person notices. And people in my family look at me weird and say, when are you getting those things off, like I look crazy. But like you both said, it’s going to be worth it. And I know it will be. So I’m getting through this!

I’m so glad to know I’m not the only one that struggles with the insecurity part of this. I thought I was kind of alone with that.

The funny thing about me... I had a huge gap between my two front teeth. I’ve worked for 18 years at THE GAP!! THat was my nickname (to myself)!!!! My insecurity with smiling is now history!!

My kids were hysterical when I came home with these “tracks “ on my teeth. It was horrible for the initial first few months. Omg, half of my meal would be trapped under those poking wires.

I’m laughing reading this, in an understanding way. I feel like I always want to point out my braces to everyone. I always get the response “
they are not that noticeable.”

How’s your teeth coming along with the braces? How much longer?
User Avatar

That’s the response I’d get too... when I know that they were noticeable and they were just being kind!! Lol. In the scheme of things, it’s okay to show others that we’re taking the initiative to fix our teeth and enhance our looks. You go girl. Xoxo
